It's loved your post, Carolina Southpaw!

It's not Pollyannish, lol...we can only maximize what we have in the given time period in this business.

These issues have been going on for GENERATIONS in nursing, yet, we still have evolved in terms of ability, skills, advocacy, etc...at the bedside, and BEYOND.

There is an "imperfect perfect storm" brewing...if history serves me right, it will go on nursing history's side; my plan is to keep the practice that has helped me continue in the business without nursing into flames for 13 years, and contribute and collaborate as much as possible... NOW.

Sometimes when I think of being a nurse, I imagine myself as a monkey in a clown suit, with circus music playing in the background and a ringmaster with a whip snapping it at me all the while taunting me with useless requests and demands to please the screaming crowd.

Yeah, I know, its sounds crazy....but sometimes I really think this scenario really resembles nursing.

Very much how I see it.

I had an administrator tell me to go around and apologize to other patients for a group home patient (DD) who was screaming and crying from pain because she didn't want to "see this come up in Press-Ganey". What?!?!

I like it! However, every facility I've worked at..

it's not ALLOWED to mention short staffing. Some will even start the disciplinary process.

I asked my nurse manager once "so instead we should leave the patients with the feeling that we are giving crappy service and are crappy nurses?" lol Didn't go over well.

Adding to the list of disrespectful managers: my last manager --

"We don't HAVE to give you guys a break at all. Check the state law." After cutting the fictional two-15 minute breaks/one-30 minute break dream to 30 minutes, and threatening to cut it lower or eliminating lunch altogether. We were working 12 hour shifts at a trauma hospital. So let's not feed the staff, eliminate any restroom breaks, and hope for the best. Great plan.

...and you're owed a check.

I can't believe some places are still doing this; they JUST got caught by the federal gov. for not giving breaks, giving people overtime...and a check.

I got 3 different checks from 3 different employers, because of this...they backdated at least 10 years...I say jump on this employer and get them to PAY UP.

*** Sounds like you don't have a union? Couple things:

1. I hope that if we are ever in a situation of many nurse openings and hospitals having a hard time filling RN positions that you all remeber this treatment.

2. I don't know your state law but in my state she would be 100% wrong and you would indeed be owed a check. I suggest you call her bluff.

Do we work at the same place? Was made to apologize to a pt who shoved me (can we say assault?) because the pt complained that the service she had received during her stay was below par. Never mind all the bending over backwards to take care of this pt I did, I was dumbfounded. What about my safety? Does anybody beside me even care that I could have been hurt or am I just one very replaceable nurse? (don't answer, it's a rhetoric question)

Seems less than professional to me.

It's like that where I work. In the same "huddle" we were told, "it's been tough around here with the acuity so high," followed by, "don't forget to get your patient's family members that cup of coffee they asked for because they'll really remember it in their survey." Blow me. I'm I allowed to say that on Allnurses? Probably not but that's what I want to say to these people with all their grand ideas. Just keeping it real.

You are my HERO!!!

Yet another example of incompetent management.

The OP's manager was completely out of line - instructing staff to "suck it up". Horrible. Disrespectful. Guaranteed to undermine professional practice & overall staff morale. A competent manager would have been transparent - letting everyone know what was going on and the changes that were taking place. Then s/he would have asked for staff input/assistance on the best way to meet these new challenges & come up with a clear plan that everyone could agree on. Finally, s/he would be there, jumping in to help out whenever things get hairy.

I am sure I am not the only one here on AN who can recall times when we had a very heavy workload, but because EVERYONE was working hard right alongside us putting in the same amount of effort - it was still 'good'. Nurses don't leave jobs - they leave managers.

I feel blessed...you have described my manager!!!
