College degrees in addition to Nrsg?

Hello!

I can't be sure if there's been a thread asking about college degrees obtained in addition to the nursing degree.

I have been an LPN for 19 years. Before I went to nursing school I obtained a BS in Psychology and did some Masters' study in Speech Pathology/Audiology(never completed the program as I decided I really wanted nursing). I'd really like to continue on for the BSN. However, if I were to enroll in a "traditional college program" (instead of Regents, for example), I'd have to retake the A&P and Chemistry because it's been 25 yrs since I took those. It seems like most college-bassed programs require that those courses be taken within 5 yrs or so of entrance into a nursing program. The idea is pretty frightening.:uhoh21:

Any RNs out there who have 1)other degrees, and, 2) who were once LPNs for 15yrs or more before returning and finishing the RN program? Can you offer any tips? Are there any LPNs out there with 15+ yrs experience with another degree on the side who are considering the pursuit of a BSN? (I've already researched the College Network program; it is WAY too expensive for ME).

A friend of mine is an LPN from 20+ years ago and she is now working towards her ADN at Excelsior (is that the former Regents?). To my knowledge is not having to repeat Chem, A&P etc. Also, at my college based ADN program, there is no time limit on science courses. There is one first year student in my program that took A&P back in 96 and is not having to repeat it. Also, my basic pre-reqs of basic bio and basic chem were taken 20 years ago and I was not required to repeat them, BUT, for the sake of my own learning and to review for A&P, I took a basic 3 credit Intro to Human Biology course....which was well worth the investment.

I'm not an RN yet. I'll graduate from an ADN program on December 20th. I have a BS in Community Health Education.

You guys are lucky. Have to have my high school sciences redone within the last 5 years. Doesn't matter on my experience or my other degrees. Just do it over and try and get better marks than an 18yr old still in high school!

I have a BA in Psychology, too. Right now I am in an accelrated BSN program. So I guess I am doing it backwards. I think it really helps me as far as knowing what I want and also having a solid background in counseling helps!

So much has changed in the body of knowledge for chem and physiology - that is the main reason the 5 yr limit is on these courses. Please don't be put off, but look at it as a chance to update what you know...I'm sure you have a very solid basis already.
