Time and a half. No management. Patients/families almost grateful you're there.

Am I the only one that LIKES working holidays? ?

So I never minded working holidays since my children are grown and gone. I was lucky to manage to be off Christmas morning with mine when they were young so I return the favor to younger moms now since mine are grown. However just let me tell you what our fabulous hospital is doing to us this year. They CLAIM our holiday pay is already factored into our PTO, never heard this one before. So in order to make this right for the hospital they were recently PLEASED to announce we have a choice of how we get paid for holidays. We can work a 12 hour shift and get paid time and half for 8 hours of it or we can work straight pay the whole shift. If we elect for the time and half for 8 hours, they are TAKING back 8 hours of our PTO.If we work the straight pay we keep our PTO. NICE!!!

People get paid time and a half for working Easter??? I've never experienced that ever in any type of job I've had.

What kind of nonsense is that?! PTO and holiday pay are supposed to be separate. I would ask to see your facility policy. That doesn't sound right.

I never minded any holiday but Christmas. Lucky for me I worked with a wonderful Jewish woman the last 6 years. I worked her holidays and she worked mine. Before that I was in management or per diem. I have only worked 2 Christmas days in 14 years of being a nurse. Otherwise, I usually volunteer to work the holidays. Double time where I work.

When I didn't have my own family I didn't mind and would work for the nurses with small kids. That has changed now that I am a mom and prefer not to work any holdiays..which I don't now:)

All public holidays get time and a half or even double here. Woohoo!

I am not particularly religious so I don't mind working Christmas or Easter. New Years is not a big deal either. I do like having the Summer holidays off, those nights are just way too busy.

At all 4 systems I've worked at, vacation sick & federal holidays are all lumped into your PTO Bank, and accrued at X hours ppp. If you work, you get paid time and a half, and your PTO remains in your bank for future use. If you are off, you get paid PTO from your bank. Not sure, but I think one allowed you to work @ time and a half, plus draw PTO, effectively paying you two and a half times for your shift.

This might sound silly, but what constitutes as winter and summer holidays? I mean, do they not count spring and autumn?

My place of employment does this too. Winter holidays - Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year's. Summer holidays - Labor Day, 4th of July, and Memorial Day. We have to work one summer holiday and one winter holiday. This year I will be working Christmas. I am in a family with a lot of nurses and firefighters so we're used to having people miss it due to work.

Easter doesn't count as a holiday at my job. I don't mind working most holidays especially since I work nights. The only holiday is hate working is New Years for obvious reasons.

When I worked in LTC, I loved wishing the residents a Merry Christmas or whatever holiday when I had to wake them up for meds in the middle of the night.

I don't mind them. Extra pay, usually a low pt load, family there keeping the sundowners entertained. What's not to like?

Yes, sometimes I do. I am divorced and don't get my young daughter every holiday which is difficult. I have no SO, and not much family, so I prefer to work on the holidays I don't have her. Distracts me and I get time and a half!

Working holidays is great because the staffing (in my facility) is guaranteed the standard and then some. Especially during the holiday season, I would much rather work a holiday/holiday weekend (where the slopes tend to be "blacked-out") & trade it for a weekday so a trip can be made to Tahoe without having to deal with all the traffic & excess of foreign vacationers. I love working holidays & I can't wait until the weather starts to get gloomy & nonstop rainy. SNOW!!! I'VE MISSED YOU!!!
