She is every thing I am not. She is tall, super intelligent, witty. She can wrap every doctor around her little finger. She talks doctors into giving orders that she feels are more appropriate then what is currently ordered. And she is always right on target in her suggestions. She is also very helpful, nice, and so organized that she has free time to glance thru a magazine or sit down during her shift. She also commands respect and does not take any dirt from anybody. I am watching and hoping some of it will rub off on me.lol :chuckle

Remember folks "all that glitters is not always gold"

Or, as Tolkien said, "All that is gold does not glitter." Amazing what one finds when we peek below the surface. Supernurses aren't always what they seem, and 'bottom of the barrel nurses' aren't always what they seem either. Learn something from everyone. :nurse:

we had this lady at my job, that told the nurse,"you must be a "hood wink!"The lady couldnt get over how she was always on top of everything, and seemed so perfect. It has become a joke now,we all refer to anyone with outstanding work ethics,as "hood winks!"I had to look it up in the dictionary, sure enough the woed does exist!;)

I work with a super nurse...she is great! She was my preceptor for a few weeks when I went to ER......Oh my goodness if I had just 1/4 of her knowledge. I work in a small hospital & everyone has pretty much the same opinion of her that I do. Doctors love her! I had one doctor tell me how lucky I was to have her showing me the ropes.....she is a barrel of fun & so very intelligent...... I just crave her wisdom! :banghead:

Remember folks "all that glitters is not always gold" I've worked with people that I thought were insanely witty, smart, organized, you name it. But who knows what these people went through to get where they are, or what their life is like outside of work? Just focus on being the best YOU can be. :D:D:D:D

So very true! Even though I think I am VERY far from being a super nurse, I got told all the time that I was a great nurse for being so new. I am also known as the one that is always upbeat, making others smile, telling jokes, etc. However, at the height of my "popularity" at my job, I was miserable inside. I was working through probably the most stressful time of my personal life, husband was out of a job, and work was my outlet and the only place I was getting positive reinforcement. When I resolved many of the issues at home, I began to sort of chill out at work and was often asked if something was wrong .

Those are great points, you never know what is going on with a person. I try to remind myself that when I do not agree with what a coworker is doing.

I worked with one. Very attractive, taller than average, great body. Nails always manicured and lipstick never faded. Could out work all of us and her hair looked as good at the end of a 12 hour shift as it did at the beginning. Could spend a 12 hr shift elbow deep in poo and her whites were never wrinkled, lil alone dirty at the end. Had been a nurse for 25+ years with the same organization and had all of the patients, doctors, and administration wrapped around her lil pinkie.

She was nightshift charge and when we needed help in the ER, she'd come down and clear the whole place out with a snap of her fingers. She was incredibly intelligent, organized, and compassionate. There was no question she couldn't answer; no problem she couldn't fix. Experienced doctors turned to her for advice during codes. Patients would write amazing letters re: the care she provided. She was an amazing nurse and an even better supervisor. She would defend the nurses on her team to the death if needed; whether you were wrong or right, she would tackle anyone from the dayshift charge to the company CEO to make sure her staff was treated fairly. But if you were in the wrong, she was going to pull you aside and let you have it. Once she made sure you knew how bad you screwed up, that was the end of it. She didn't hold grudges and she gave everyone a second chance. She was everything I wanted to be. Met her my first year out of nursing school. I learned more from her that first year than I've learned during the rest of my career. Not only did I idolize her, I wanted to be BE her with her beautiful home, husband, and kids...Even her dog was perfect.

I think about her a lot now. I feel guilty for not realizing at the time what a troubled soul she really was. I feel like I should have seen some of her pain. But I'm also mad at her for misleading all of us to believe she was someone she wasn't. Turns out, these PERFECT, IN-CONTROL creatures usually have lives that are spinning totally out of control. My idol; my hero; my IDEAL of THE perfect nurse...had a nasty little secret. Invisible cracks in her perfection. There's just something about her hiding in the closet shooting the patients' Dilaudid into her own veins that made me think twice about wanting to be her. So much for my illusion.........I think she broke my heart a little.

A super nurse never ever consider her self super nurse.. because she know that she could not be because she is human also!

Only twisted mind nurses could belive about them slef that are SUPER.

Yup Zuzi know couple of really super nurses that never ever will told or act like "I am the best" because they DO the best! And also couple more of "I am the best attitude" without real coverage....poor them and also hard to handle for us the regular nurses! Looooool!

I will tell you about one a strong baseball nurse, loooool, ZUzi love her sooo much. Is a woman like a rock, could scarry you but Zuzi always like this mix pf fellings, lool, very strong analytical mind, very organized, in 3 words control a world, a pleasure to work with her.f course that people could not be so happy with her because she KNOW what she do it and what is CORRECT and what is NOT. Talks a few but pinpointed. Is great! 30 years of experience! Soft soul, playbaseball...love her!

Muaaaaaaaaah! For you honey.... nurse are humans....so some times they could screw up their lives...is not your duty to stigmatize her, was a idol for you so let her to stay in your memories as it was... the best!

Specializes in Staff nurse.

...I wonder how many super nurses are on substances or have mental illnesses where we see them at their "highs" or "manic" phases...or hyperthyroid pts. Not to take away from those who perform exceptionally well and for the pt. and staff's benefit.

But I wonder how she/he can do it all and make it look so effortless?

Then I go back to my work, prioritizing to give my patients the best I can with what I have that particular shift.

What about the "posers," ones who claim they can do any and everything and then get flustered when they have to take patients. (like my Assistant Director at the last facility I worked at). I couldn't stand it. You couldn't go to him with a question because he would be like "you don't know that?" And when you did point out something he said was wrong he would get all huffy about it!

I think everybody works with at least one or two of those "super nurse" types........but if you ask them how they do it, they just look at you with that blank look and go "What do you mean?" :chuckle

I know what you mean!! :chuckle I've worked with some women I wished I could clone and pull out of my pocket during frantic or doubtful times.

This one gal especially, always knew exactly what to do in ANY emergency, and she knew the best and quickest way to do it. Plus, she was fun to work with! I worshipped the ground she walked on.

Imagine my pleasure when I ran into her and another nurse a few years later, she introduced me as 'the smartest nurse she ever knew'!:lol2:
