Am I Typhoid Tazzi?????

Nurses General Nursing

Published

i'm starting to get a complex here......about 3 weeks ago a pt of mine went into the hospital. since then three others have gone in after i took them on. this morning i called the daughter of the first pt to see how she was doing and i hear "she passed away this morning." never made it out of the hospital.

the second pt had a toe amp due to gangrene, and the infection spread in spite of daily visits. he went back for a bka. *btw.....when the wife told me the pt had to have a bka she started yelling on the phone to me....."i want you girls....you and that other nurse...to come back here when he comes home from the hospital!!!" *

a third had a wound infection that was draining so much we couldn't keep up with it. she went in.

the last one........i discharged him from nursing services last thursday and two days later he stroked again.

i think i'll crawl into bed and stay there.........

(((hugs)))

I'm sorry you're having a such rough time right now. It's not your fault, but of course I know you know that. I don't really know what to say, other than hang in there.

I know this is difficult for you to witness all of this, but for some reason, I pick up a person who is very loving (meaning you) and you are what these people need at this time. Hang in there. You are a mentor to us young nurses here on this forum. I love reading your posts, and gain knowledge from you.

Tazzi,

I am so sorry that you've hit a bad snag! :o I know that you gave the best care possible to these patients. Some things are just simply out of our control. Hang in there, Sweetie! Things will look up again soon. ;)

Sorry to hear you've hit a rough patch. I too can identify with what you're going through. I went through a week one time where there was a code blue on our floor every night I worked (half of them my pts). Coworkers were teasingly starting to make the sign of a cross when I came on the ward! Stretches like that can really make us start to doubt ourselves, especially when families or others yell or criticize us. Continue to believe in yourself though. I, too, have enjoyed reading your posts, and gaining from your experience and advice. You always seem to put what's best for the pt's interest foremost, and that is probably why this is hitting you so hard. If you didn't care about your pts, you wouldn't take the time to follow up and check on them, or to feel badly about the eventual outcome. By sending them to hospital, you gave them the best chance for a positive outcome. Keep up the good work, and know that many of your pts. appreciate all you do for them, just we don't hear the positive often enough. Hang in there!

I agree Tazzi,

Your posts help more than you know. Don't be too hard on yourself, it's out of our hands at some point in time.

As Sharon put it.....I agree you are more helpful than you will ever know...

thank you, everyone! loulee, the yelling wasn't negative, the woman was telling me that she wanted me and my lvn to come back and care for him after the bka. in the past they had gone with another agency, this was their first time with us and she wanted us back.

oops, sorry! my mistake! it's a compliment to you and your great care that they wanted you back. don't let the other cases get you down! keep on caring!

You know, Tazz, that you HH nurses are taking up where insurance (or lack of) leaves off. A good many of those HH pts shouldn't even be OUT of the hospital! Back in the days before DRGs and mega antibx, people stayed in the hospital until they were WELL enough to go home-not STABLE enough to go home! As we all know, physical stability in an ill person can vary from day to day, if not hour to hour! Now, Nurses like you are dealing with issues such as you describe, and MRSA is becoming rampant, even into our schools.

I don't know any answers, but I sure hear where you're coming from!
