Nurse pay in Jacksonville?

U.S.A. Florida

Specializes in Pediatrics.

I was wondering what the average pay rate is in Jacksonville. I'm relocating in the next couple of months. I have 5 years experience. Thanks!

I'm in Jacksonville, I'm not a nurse yet but I have a family member who is one with about 5 years experience too. I believe she told me the starting pay is about $22-$23, so obviously quite a bit more for 5 years experience. Sorry its not much help but hopefully you can go off of this info:) Good luck:D

How is the job market in Jacksonville? Who is hiring? Who has the best patient to nurse ratios? These would be very useful things to know. Thanks.

Well, we have a lot of hospitals in the Jacksonville area. There is Baptist, their ratio is about 1:6 and they are the lowest paying hospital. The highest is Shands and their ratio is like 1:4. Orange Park Medica Center and Memorial hospital are in between, and then there is Flaggler in St. Augustine, St. Luke's , St. Vincents which unfortunately I don't know a lot about

Thanks. I thought Shands was in Gainsville? Is this a hospital they own in Jax? Are these hospitals posting jobs for nurses? I applied to a hospital in Jax, one owned by Memorial and got back a thank you for applying email. LOL! Thanks for your help!

I think a lot of folks are looking to make a move this spring. To much cold weather!:yeah:

Jacksonville has it's own Shands.

Not sure what the hiring is like for experienced nurses, but it is non-existent for GNs. :(

Good luck with your search!

I know Shands and Baptist in Jax both have job posting listed up on their websites. Baptist doesn't have salary info, but Shands does if I remember correctly. I don't have the website names, but if you google them they are pretty easy to find.

I work a St. Vincents in Jacksonville. Starting salary is $22 for ADN and $23 for BSN, $1 more for certification plus shift diff and weekend pay. St. Lukes is part of the same hospital system, so I assume the pay is the same.

I also heard Baptist is the lowest paying, around $19 to start, but I also found it to be a nice hospital with the best patient to nurse ratios. They have several locations throughout Jacksonville.

There is a Shands in Jacksonville as well as Gainesville, and I've heard they are the highest paying, I think $24 to start.

There is also Memorial hospital, Mayo, Orange Park Medical Center, and Specialty hospital. Am I leaving any out?

All of the local hospitals have plenty of job listings. The problem is....they are wanting experienced nurses over new grads.

Good luck.

Specialty pays really well, especially if you work on the weekend. Shands has a 5:1 or 6:1 patient ratio (I did my role transformation clinical there) and never saw a 4:1 ratio, except if you work in on of their many ICU's. Mayo does however have a 4:1 patient ratio and pays comparitively to Shands. I know Mayo just went through and hired a bunch of new grads for their new grad program. With Shands, you had to be a tech there while in nursing school to get on there if you do not have any experience.

Ms. Whitney,

A NBN nurse @ OP claimed that Baptist and Shands will only take you in if you have BSN.... have you seen anyone not being considered at a JAX hosp because they "only" have an ASN? (From your fellow grads?)

I heard the same thing about flaggler in St. Augustine

The only hospital I know of that absolutely will not take you if you do not have a BSN (or really good connections) is Flagler. I have had several friends get hired at all of the Baptist's and Wolfson's even with their ASN. And a lot of the people I graduated with got jobs at Shands with their ASN, but the catch is you have to have a job at Shands as a tech to even be considered there. I know a few who got hired at Shands in Gainesville though with their ASN and no previous tech or nurse experience. Shands still hires LPNs so it would be hard to grasp that they would require a BSN. I know Baptist likes to see that you are continuing your education because they are magnet.
