Can't get a job as new RN

U.S.A. Florida

Published

Hello all,

I'm hoping someone will be able to help me...I'm a brand new RN in Orlando, FL and I've been looking for a hospital job for the last 5 months with no luck. Every job opening I see requires you to have at least 1 year of hospital experience but no one will hire me. I've applied to about 200 jobs and nothing....every recruiter/HR dept tells me it is because I don't have experience. Anyone else around here going through this?? :o

Try the James Haley VA they have internships for new graduates

in may areas. It a great place to work:wink2:

I applied to the GN positions around town and I always get an almost immediate, sorry but try again next time reply. I believe that there is a nursing shortage. Hospitals are just not hiring to cut expenses. I know friends who work on Medical units and have over 10 patients per shift sometimes. Another friend works on a step down unit where they routinely get overflow patients from the Med/surg unit. i know for a fact that this hospital has very high turnover but they are just not hiring. How are these positions being filled?

I'm very disheartened. I never thought I'd love nursing as much as I do, but if things dont turn around soon, I'm considering taking any well paying job to pay the bills and then go back to school. I tear up sometimes over the lost opportunity. I know I could have made a really good bedside nurse. When one door closes, another opens.....i hope...

Funny, I am in Jacksonville, and I heard they are begging for nurses in Orlando. Guess that ain't exactly right!

They are hiring but only nurses with at least one year experience.

Have any of you tried the local county jails, or Floridas Prison system? I found this link for the state VA. no experience required

https://jobs.myflorida.com/viewjob.html?optlink-view=view-312425&ERFormID=newjoblist&ERFormCode=any

also...I am starting LPN school in Jan, and I have a question...if you cant find a job as an RN, couldnt you just work as an LPN???? There are LPN jobs in the prisons and nursing homes....

I don't think the issue is one of whether you can work as an LPN or not. It's a matter of experience. These days, no one wants a nurse, of any kind, without experience. There are far fewer jobs for LPNs than RNs in any case and those are likely to be given to LPNs with experience over an RN without any.

in pa, philadelphia 5 county area, most new jersey, some area's ny city and boston, ma all not hiring new nursing graduates as positions filed by per diem /part time staff picking up increased workload and hiring freezes. even experienced rn's having trouble landing positions.

in this era of electronic medical records, i recommend that all new grads become proficient in computer applications (especially word, excel, powerpoint) if not already and include that on application.

check our thread: wondering why you can't get hired or promoted: resume + interview hints!

did you try paoli hospital?

try the VA Hospitals in PA,Delware,NJ and NY

the benefits even beat Disneys Package! lol

lOAN PAYBACKS AND INTERNSHIPS

I've recently moved to FL with my family from CA. Graduated from Loma Linda Univ. with BSN, have a few months experience as an RN in the CT-ICU. I have ACLS as well as hospital training for EKG interpretation. I'm still considered a new grad because I haven't had enough experience. So I applied to the VA in Tampa, Bay Pines, Florida Hospital in Orlando, and with the Baycare Health System in Tampa, all for graduate nurse internship positions. I thought the little experience I had would put me towards the top of the list, but man was I wrong. All have told me they "acknowledge my achievements but are unable to offer me the position at this time!" haha I'm not sure what's going on, but it's definately hard/nearly impossible to get a new grad job in tampa or orlando area. Any ideas from someone who's had similar experiences?

Hey, I had quite a few classmates that WORKED for baycare all through nursing school who had challenges finding positions. I really don't know what kind of advice to give but I know that I'm always looking for a second job and fully acknowledge that I won't be able to find one until I have a full year of experience under my belt. Then my options open up.

This is also happening with experienced RN's if they havent been at the bedside in the last 1-2years. I've been an RN for 30 years in critical care with the last 3 in chronic dialysis and having the same issues. Funny thing is the 2 hospitals in my area (daytona) just had huge expansions with new building and in fact one replaced the entire hospital. Halifax is laying off and the other hiring freeze. I had to sign up for a flu immunization clinic to get work for the time being. Hang in there as it's not just new grads.
