Denver residents

U.S.A. Colorado

Any one out there from the Denver area? I'm planning on moving and wanted to get some input on the city from the ppl who live around there.

What areas are nice to live in?

How's the job outlook? Did you have an easy time finding one?

Just want some general input.

If you want to PM me, feel free.

Thanks!

Unfortunately I don't know much about PSL or St. Joe's. I have heard good things about both. The two new hospitals are Parker Adventist and (I think this is the name) Sky View. Sky View is right off a major interstate, way south of the metro area, Parker Adventist is in a small (but quickly growing) suburb of Denver. I know that the Parker hospital is part of Centura Health, the Catholic and Adventist health system and a friend who works for them says they are a great organization to work for. Both hospitals are opening slowly, unit by unit and I have no idea when L&D will be open with either. I think it is going to depend partly on where you end up living as both of these are quite a distance from the main Denver area.

A magnet hospital is one whose services, environment and benefits are designed to draw nurses and keep them. Magnet status is something granted by a national organization (cant' remember which one) and it takes several years and lots of paperwork to achieve. A magnet hospital will have good nurse to patient ratios, competetive salaries and a management system that usually emphisises shared governance (lots of committees and nurses have a say in how things are done). You will usually find benes like tuition reimbursement for continuing ed and an emphasis on nurse empowerment at a magnet facility.

Tell your husband not to be leery of Denver schools and neighborhoods.

It isn't Detroit, L.A., or Philly.

Denver is great. Has he been to Colorado? to Denver? (not far from Kansas in miles, but a faster pace in Denver than you probably have now.)

But the rewards are worth the sacrifices to get there.

Does he ski? Hunt?

The state school boards in every state have the rankings of the schools. Then, all you have to do is ask for the map showing the boundaries of the school district that you want .

If you all miss Kansas, it will always be there.

Good luck in your adventure.

2 very nice and informative posts. Thanks both of you. It is scary to start something new but I am up for it. I figure if I get on w/ a hospital I don't like I won't stay past what is required. Looks like about 2 years will be required for the sign-on bonuses. I can do anything for 2 years as long as my life or my license are not on the line. Right?

Thanks all, keep your fingers crossed for us. Terri

Terri,

For L&D, both hospitals would be good. St. Joe's does deliver quite a few babies a year. PSL does more high risk OB/perinatal and higher acuity NICU than St Joe's. PSL is part of HealthOne and St. Joe's is closely associated with the Kaiser system. I work in critical care but if I had a choice, I would seriously consider PSL. But that's just me. Tour both hospitals and see which one you like better. As far as location is concerned, they are 1/2 a block from each other in downtown Denver.

The newer hospitals being built in the southern suburbs are nice. My husband is an RT at SkyRidge, let me tell you, they put a lot of money into that hospital and it looks like a 5 star hotel. It is gorgeous and has newer technology. You might keep that in mind.

As far as housing is concerned, it depends a lot on what price range for house you are looking at. In Denver you can pretty much count on a rush hour commute of at least 20 minutes from almost anywhere in the city. There are plenty of nice, private, catholic schools. I don't know what you're paying now but it is something to consider.

Denver is a great city to live in. There is so much to do here, the mountains are beautiful, there is a great variety of things to do and see.

Good luck!

St Joe's is a Kaiser hospital and does about 350-400 deliveries a month. Pres/St Lukes does 150-190. Alot of high risk and antepartum. Sky Ridge is new (opened 8/03) and I hear they are still working out the bugs. Lutheran, the magnet hospital is in the Lakewood/Denver area, not Littleton. Littleton has an adventist hospital and that group is building a new one in Parker just south of Denver. Two Hospitals in the Englewood/Denver area are Porters(and aventist hospital and Swedish (heathone/HCA Like Pres/STL. Aurora(HCA) has a hospital on 225 and is offering a hire bonus, but don't know the details. Boulder has a brand new facility that is supossed to be beautiful. Denver also has Rose(HCA), University and Denver health. 2 in the north suburbs are Avista and North suburban. Catholic education is expensive here with high school from 5500 to 7500. Elementary is about 3000. housing also

Hi All

I am hoping to relocate to Colorado this summer with my 2 daughters. We are planning a trip there first, to check out jobs, apartments, gymnastic schools, etc. I have been doing research on the Denver/Boulder areas.

I would love to get a travel assignment or a seasonal position there first. I have done travel nursing in the past. I work NICU and also pedi home health.

I would appreciate any info or recommendations anyone of you have.

I currently live in Louisiana.

Thanks so much

KK
