Anyone Applying to Antelope Valley College RN program

U.S.A. California

Published

I didn't see a thread on AVC nursing so I just made one for everyone. IS anyone applying to AVC nursing or in the program already? The person working at the department told me it would be like 3 semester waits. I'm expecting to get in around fall 2011 or spring 2012 since I turn in my application around October 2010. Anyone in the program already, would you please share your experience. Anyone who is about to get in the program, can you please tell me how long you've waited since the time you turn in the application?

Thanks everyone!!!

Hey guys,

just let u all know wat is my ranking rite now on the waitng list at AVC nursing program. I turn in my application in nov 2010 and was at # 204. Then in early January I was at #110. Recently I went back to ask them, im #124 which was odd, I dont know why my ranking just went up more. Should of went down. But it doesnt matter, because the lady there told me that I mostly wont get in till spring 2012. So that would be 2 or 3 semester wait ( spring 11, fall 2011, spring 2012) . I really hope I get in this fall 2011, but so far, havent heard from them telling me to take the tease test yet. Anyways good luck to all of u!!! Turn in ur application as soon as possible.

WOW...wait... how can you go from 200 decline to 100's and then increase?? that really helps me though.. you ever think about la city harbor i hear there is a lotter system.. and from what i can tell so is COC frankly i dont want to wait... i guess it doesnt hurt since perhaps you can work on you BSN for maybe CSUB which i hear is all online but still dang.. that is kind of discouraging.. so it looks like the wait list of 3 semester is what its most likely accurate... on a brighter side.. fellow classmates are saying that AVC spits out some of the BEST RN students..

Mumkeyan,

They did the same thing to me. I called periodically and knew my standing due to the fact that my friend had turned her app prior to mine, and i knew how many spaces apart we were. Anyhow, that's when I noticed the discrepancy, but this only happened when I had someone else answer the phone who was not ------. She is the main person you want to speak about your current rank since she is the one who keeps the tabs. Anyone else might not be so up to date on your ranking. In the end, when I spoke to her again rather than anyone else, she gave me the number that really made more sense to me and the one that I knew I should have been considering my friends ranking. Don't loose hope, you seriously never know when you'll be called in :-)

hi skybmonkey,

thanks for the encouragement. I finally did get through to the right person and sure enough, the person I talk to earlier did gave me false info. I guess I can understand why they could have given the wrong info. Some of them are really stress out everyday cuz everyone wants to know what their rank are and when they will get in. I am actually #110 and havent change since january. This is nice to hear though, at least I can know for sure I will be put in spring 2012, if everything goes accordingly and no more budget cuts that will affect the number of students theyre taking in. Anyways, I think I will check back after spring ends, because I think that is when the next 60 students or so will enter the fall program and so my rank should decrease hopefully around 50-60. Well good luck to you, you're getting into the fall program rite? I just talk to an old friend of mine and she just took her teas last week. It was great, went well for her. She will be in the fall semester. By the way, since we just have the new hospital in Palmdale, do you think we will do our clinical there ? Or even both the AV hospital too? It would be kind of nice to alternate our clinical in both hospital, would help us to get to know different kind of environment.

munkeyan,

Hi,

I am glad you were able to speak to the right person. Don't fret #110 really is not bad at all, and like I've mentioned before some students either don't meet the minimum requirements for the TEAS, or something just doesn't go well for them, or they just decide to go with another school. I honestly couldn't believe when they called me a week and a half prior to school starting offering me a spot. So your chances are good even with the budget cut. I take it you attended yesterday's pre-orientation. And Yes I will be in the Fall semester, my # right now is 19.

In regards to the clinicals, they do both the Palmdale Regional and AV Hospital. I think it depends on the days, not really sure, I've got a friend who is doing her first semester and she's on Wed&Thur clinicals, so when she starts I'll be better informed, but from what I recall I believe she also thought those two days were for Palmdale Regional.

Always be prepared that you might be called in b/c u never know, so save your money for the stuff you'll have to purchase (books are around 6oo in total for that first semester) and uniforms 150 for the set I believe, and the other expenses for CPR and malpractice isurance (70), your background (50), health screening and drug testing and units, since they said units will go up by 10 more dollars I believe in the summer. Good luck :)

can you apply before you have your prereqs done lets say your in your last one?? ive heard from a nurse in her 3rd semester you can.. i mean the core pre reqs... like i want to apply now im taking phys in the summer.. not sure though. ive heard from her that your not going to wait a three semester.. it usually is 2 so i think youll get in after a semester.. =)

As far as I know, you have to have completed your nursing pre-req, the micro, human anat and phys, the english and i think math. Anyhow, if however you have taken a class that is similar to any of those classes at another college, you can petition to the dean and see if she will accept it. Like for example, I took Medical Physiology at my undergrad, but was taking human phys at AVC b/c I wasn't sure if they were going to accept that Med Phys, and the petition took about 2-3 months to be reviewed and accepted, so i was cleared to appply to the program while concurently taking the human phys, and got to put in my application 2 weeks before the semester ended, which got me in before all the other nursing students who were waiting to finish the semester for human phys.

But if I were you just go and ask the counselor and see what they can do for you. Honestly, the student services are pathetic, b/c I a had called up to a month after I had submitted my petition, and they had either forgotten about it or God knows what, so they called the dean of Science and they told me she had denied it. 2 months later I get my original petition copy in the mail saying it was approved :/ But by that time, registration was around the corner and I didn't get an appointment with the counselor until a month later, and that is me having to be waiting in line at 7 am for an appointment. lol Anyhow, glad I got that out of the way, I've got more faith in the program itself than the student services.

...so I made it to the counseling office at AVC and got my edu plan! Yay for me!!

From what I've heard, you could apply to the program without having all the prereqs, if I would of known!!

Now, you guys are scaring me! I need to start saving to buy all that stuff you just mention we need for nursing school.

I'm going to Bakersfield College right now but I plan on applying to BC and AVC's RN programs. Is it possible to apply without having all the prereqs finished, and all the courses that I've finished at a different school? I'd like to get my name on that waiting list if I can.

Hey ya'll,

Congrats third watch on the edu plan! :-)

Okay so there are prerequesites and requesites needed to obtain your AA in nursing.

But in order to apply to the program, there are 4 you must have completed, and these are

Human Anatomy w/lab 4 units

Human Physiology w/lab 4 units

General Microbiology w/lab 5 units

English (Freshman Composition) 3 units

These 4 are required, along with your educational plan in order to apply. You also need other requirements (not classes, like GPA and such) and you can find this information here http://www.avc.edu/academics/hs/common/documents/adnbrochuregeneric.pdf

The other requirements can be completed before or after you are already in the program. But the 4 on top I just mentioned you def need before applying. Good luck! :-)

Ya you know, in regards to the money at first I knew it was roughly like 2000, then on that meeting she said okay so if you say 2500 you are okay and put that in your mind, but b/c of the budget cuts and b/c the state will be increasing fees in the middle of the summer it's best that you say 3000. Now worse case scenario is that they increase it by half and you will then be looking at around 4000. But for now say 3000. That is what she said. yikes!

yes the books are a killer, and did i mention that one set of the uniform is 150.00 bucks (this is only a shirt and pants)? And you have to purchase it from their required manufacturer. It's insane, i encourage everyone to apply to the fafsa and even see if you can get a tuition voucher, you might or might not qualify but better to try. I did my fafsa, and got nothing so far, but i'm looking into scholarships now. let's hope, although in the end, 3000-4000 really isn't so bad for a nursing program.

Grants are out of the question. I can get loans, but really don't want to. I'm just going to start saving at least $400 from every paycheck. I think by then I'll have enough.

I really wanted to get the Iphone 5 coming out in July, but I think I'm going to pass this time.

Ok. $150.00 for a set of scrubs?? Are they made out of gold? Aughhh!!!! So disappointing:uhoh3:
