Anyone Applying to Antelope Valley College RN program

U.S.A. California

Published

I didn't see a thread on AVC nursing so I just made one for everyone. IS anyone applying to AVC nursing or in the program already? The person working at the department told me it would be like 3 semester waits. I'm expecting to get in around fall 2011 or spring 2012 since I turn in my application around October 2010. Anyone in the program already, would you please share your experience. Anyone who is about to get in the program, can you please tell me how long you've waited since the time you turn in the application?

Thanks everyone!!!

hey everyone,

great news. I just got a letter telling me that i have permission to take the teas V test. if spot is open in fall 2011 then im in. But here is wat I would like to ask for those already taken the test. Im so nervous!!! Im planning to buy the manual and the two online asessment from the atitestin.com site. Anyways any advice on wat to expect and study? Also, if you guy dont mind, can u please tell me what was the overal score you have for the teas V? I just want to get a feel on the score range people are getting at AVC. I heard the version 5 is much harder than all the previous one. Oh also, I havent ask the department wat the satisfactory score to pass the teas yet but does anyone by any chance know wat it is? I think its 62, but correct me if I am wrong.

Anyone im excited to take the test but im also worry about my sis who is both working and taking class at avc, im scare she wont have the time to study it. The test is not until april 21 so we got a month to study. Im excited about it all but Im thinking maybe i should defer the testing till next semester when im i have fall term off. Better prepare to study I guess. So yes, if anyone has alrady taken it, please give so advice or tell us about ur experience.

thank you every one!!!

oh btw skybmonkey. thanks for telling me about the clinical. That is great were gonna have at both places!!! But we actually strt clinical right begining of first semesster??? wow! I didnt expect its that early, i thought it would be around the third semester. I guess, the earlier u get the feel of things in the hospital, the better it is. And yes, Im alrady worrying about the cost of the program. even though i have financial aid (grants) but now im not so sure if that is enough. Im trying to look for a job now to help pay for the expense. Anyways thanks for ur reply and help. U been alot help to the people on this thread

Congratulations!!!! I'm so happy for you!

I'm studing right now because I'm done taking classes! I'll wait for others to respond to your questions. I want to know the answers to what you ask and go from there. From what I've read, you only need the study guide. The online practice test are harder than the actual test. Learn to valance chemical equations for sure.

I'll check back for other answers! You're getting there...and I'm so excited for you.

Thirdwatch,

Thank you very much!! Im excited too . Are you taking the teas test soon as well? Yes, that is wat I heard also, online pratice test is much harder than the actual one. Some people did like at least 10 points better on the actual exam than the practice. There is a thread on this site about the test and it has suggestion from people who has already taken it. It sounds really helpful, you might wanna check that out if youre taking it soon. Anyways, I think im about to make an important decision, I hope its not wrong. Im thinking of defering the tease test till next semester, that means I wont be in it till spring 2012 for sure. Even though I could take it now and might possibly be place in fall 2011 but I decided that its too soon for me. With classes that I have now and with my brother and his family moving in soon, and trying to look for a job ...too many things happening all at once. I think its best if I be in the program in spring 2012 when everything is calm again. Plus, fall term off I can just concentrate on the study guide for the test and work. Does anyone think its not a good idea to have a part time job if youre in the program??

I got the study guide at amazon.com. I'm studying now because I can take the TEAS in Vegas anytime. I can then transfer my scores to AVC.

If you want, you may study in the Summer and take it then in Las Vegas. You'll still be able to start in the Fall. You can try working part-time. It's what you can handle. I know nurse that where working full-time while in nursing school, but that's them. I'm going to keep it at 30 hours/week.

Again, everything is possible. Don't be nervous, we're all heading the same direction!! You'll be just fine ;0

to thirdwatch,

oh wow ur lucky that u can take it anytime. They schedule me in april which sucks when its in the middle of smemester with all the mid exams going on. I wish we got to pick our dates. Wait, do u live here in the antelope valley or Las Vegas? U can actually take the teas at any location correct or does it have to be at your own school? Im thinking of going to talk to the department tomorrow about changing to it till next semester for the test and see wat they said. 30 hr/week sound good enough. I probably will try to keep it at that amount of hours too. Cant go school without working, someone has to pay the bills :D. and yeah i saw the study guide on amazon. it was alot cheaper too but I decided to get the online asssesment just so i get a feeling of how the test gonna be. I get really nervous when I have to take atest that has time limits. I get really scare thinking I wont finisht the section in time. It's so weird though, I do well on all other tests in school but anything have to do with a time limitation, I freeze. haha well thanks thirdwatch. Hopefully you will get into the program soon and ill meet u one day.

Congratulations!!! Good for you. I read your post following this one but will reply here so i dont forget to answer your questions. I took the previous version of the test, and I studied the manual they give you b/c the exam is basically the same things from the manual. I studied the week of, b/c i i didnt have the time, the reading and english are pretty basic, it's the science that will get ya. i am not that great in math, thus I did have to focus my attention on math more. I think I didn't run out of time in the math but I was really rushing it on that one. It's not that I don't know math,it just takes me longer to solve problems, like long division and getting percentages and stuff. The book does pretty good in preparing you for the math though. The science is an animal of a different species if you ask me. i wish i could tell you what to study, but all i remember is them asking me about rocks. Most of the science there is jr/high school science, stuff we honestly don't even use in nursing so it's really weird to be tested on that. lol. They will test you via a computer, and basically they will tell the order of the test (like if math is first, english so on..) and you go at your own pace, so if you finish a section before the time expires you can continue to the next and don't have to wait for the rest of the students to finish. Do know your ATI login information please do not forget this b/c one guy at my test time forgot his and he was 1 second away from not being allowed to take the test. The girl next to him helped me recover his name and password while the instructor gave instructions. So write it down and take it with you. The reason you need it is b/c when you get there, you'll be loggin on to the ATI section and the instructor will give you the school code and some other code and you'll use that on their website to take the test. Since you are buying their online exams, you'll see that it's similar to your exams. And yes the online ones are harder. My friend did it that way, and she scored well. I passed as well in the 80's, and the cut off then was 67. But now with the new version it's 62. It's a bit harder the dean stated but from the students that took it this time only 10 did not pass it. Not bad.

Anyhow if you ask me the ATI book itself is what you need, unless you need extra math problems like i did. lol...you can then search on line for those.

Now about the clinicals, the reason you start the first semester is b/c you have to apply the knowledge you learned in those 6 weeks of skills lab. After the 6 weeks of skills lab you go to the hospital and do your thing ;) and then after about 4 weeks or so you come back to the skills lab for another 2 weeks to learn injections and then go back to the hospital until the semester ends. It will be similar each semester.

Thirdwatch, yea i think the uniforms are made of gold hehehehe (i wish, then I'd wear them every day)

Okay let me tell you something, you have to do what is best for you, and if you feel that taking it in April is not going to work for you then it's better to postpone it until you are ready :)

I speak from experience, not about the test, but about declining offers b/c I then thought about them and knew it wouldn't work. Example, i got into the nursing program at COC, but then after the driving to the school several times I realized it was going to be an issue not just for the classes but for their clinicals since they have various locations (even in glendale and simi valley). I have a 3 year old and that just wasn't going to to work well for me, especially on those winter days that snow (b/c its been a pattern now for the last 4 years). So I didn't want to go to school and besides stressing about classes, having to stress about my child. Then I got an offer a week and a half before school began to enter AVC nursing this spring. I declined again b/c I just was not ready, financially, mentally, and my potential day care situation was on the rocks. I am glad I said no, b/c my day care situation would have been a problem come may. So was it hard for me to say no twice, lol, oh boy yea, I really thought I was being stupid but my gut feeling was telling me I was right. Glad I went with my gut.

Hope any of this stuff helps, oh and by the way I took my testing at COC but my friend took it at AVC and with what i told her i was able to prepare her for that exam and she did well. :) Good luck!

If you're not ready, just pospone. Then you'll know for sure that You'll be in in the Spring. You'll mentaly ready. You don't need to worry about spending money on gas since the clinicals are in the area. Imagen driving to Glendale,or Simi Valley?

Thanks for the info skybmonkey! TEAS V is a lot different. The science is the hard part now. Rock classification is no longer there. I read somewhere that the manuel is enough to prepare you.

Ohh good I am glad! The science was the hardest in the old versions too, the national mean was lowest for science than any other section. eeessshhh can you believe it? Good luck thirdwatch and munekey (i know i spelled it wrong sorry)

haha its ok that u spell it wrong. Thanks both of you for the support. Thanks thirdwatch for sharing your personal story, that helps. I understand how you feel. I dont have any kids yet, but I understand how busy a mother can get and its hard to work or do anything else for yourself when you have a family. They come first. And places with too many clinical site is such a problem. Driving around to sites is already a hassle, especially if the sites are in two different city. Two clininical site is good enough but more than that is too much. I wont have enough time to familiarize myself with its surrounding and people. But yes, I am not ready for it yet. The whole time I really beleived I wont be in it till spring 12 but when the letter came I was so excited. Now that i am calm , I thought it over about how tight my schedule is as of right now and cant fit the test into it. I talk to the department this morning and they told me it was fine and that next sememster i can take it. They even told me it will be around september for the next testing which is great, now I can prepare myself even better knowing when to expect it. I will follow my instinct this time and postpone it. thanks skybmonkey for the suggestion on wat to study and expect. I really hope the rock stuff is not on it, its not even relevant to nursing! I do have trouble with math like you, I can do it but it takes a while especillay when u dont have a calculator in hand. The science, I would have to pull back on all my notes in anatomy, phy, and micro, chem to review it. I would have to look up math stuff online if it doesnt cover well in the study guide.

About the clinical, wow skybmonkey, you really know everything. You are so ready for this!! :D That is nice that we get a chance to apply our knowlege that soon in the hospital, defintely will help us sharpen up and feel more confident in ourself before we graduate. Yeah!! I cant wait for the injection part. Thats my favorite, learning to draw blood and those IV stuff. Recently, I turn in my application to the av hospital for volunteering and hopefully they will let me volunteer. I think that would help me get to know the place before I get into the program. Again thanks everyone. And good luck in everything. Thirdwatch, I hope everything will work out for you so that you dont have to say no again when the next offering of the program comes around. Thanks again everyone!!! I know i say that alot already haha.

Quick question.

There are so many rumors regarding AVC's nursing program, but the most recent I've heard is that they've reduced their base acceptance number for Fall of 2011 to 40 students!! Has anybody else heard about this??

Oh, and regarding cost...after tuition, I spent about $1000 more or less on books, supplies, and my uniform. I bought my books off of Amazon and saved about $200 that way and that went towards my uniform.

Good luck to everyone again!

The last I heard, straight from the Deans mouth, was that this was worse case scenario b/c of the budget cut. That was march 10th. I don't know what the final decision was b/c faculty had to meet up and discuss and propose and then finalize. So, I guess well soon find out once acceptance letters get mailed out.
