Anyone Applying to Antelope Valley College RN program

U.S.A. California

I didn't see a thread on AVC nursing so I just made one for everyone. IS anyone applying to AVC nursing or in the program already? The person working at the department told me it would be like 3 semester waits. I'm expecting to get in around fall 2011 or spring 2012 since I turn in my application around October 2010. Anyone in the program already, would you please share your experience. Anyone who is about to get in the program, can you please tell me how long you've waited since the time you turn in the application?

Thanks everyone!!!

Yes, Maternity is in the planning process! They had a maternity floor, but they're using it for ortho.

I loved working at the prison. I was never exposed to so many infections as in the hospital. The inmates 99% of the time were very respectful.

There's lots of overtime and then some. I"ll go back as soon as I gradute. I don't miss my over-an-hour commute.

I don't want to go to school and work, but all the nurses where I work have done it. I'll try but if I get overwelm, I'll just go to school.

Thirdwatch and ICUterrry,

I know AVC tells you it's a 3 semester wait, but it's more like 2 semesters, and if you are lucky even 1. I put in my application June 2010, and few weeks back was offered a spot (which I couldn't accept) for Spring 2011. The waitlist is long, but some of the applicants either don't pass the TEAS or get accepted to other programs or what not, and thus the waitlist drops. So, I would recommend you still put in your app. To get an appointment with the counselor, please do so before the pre-registration period begins b/c you'll end up having to physically be present around 7am waiting in line to get an appointment. Forget about calling in trying to make an appointment during that time because they take the students who are physically in line as priority, so by the time they do actually answer your call, all the appointments have been given away for that day (and I don't mean same day appointments).

Good luck :-)

This is true. There are a few students in my class who were literally called two weeks before the program started to see if they wanted to take spots that were reserved for students that didn't follow through.

This is the easy part. Getting the educatinal plan from the counselors is the hardest. You can catch a respiratory problem waiting out in the cold/snow from 6am to 8am when they open for a same day appoitment.

how can it be hard waiting for an ED plan... Most pre nursing students have counselors because they are in some type of special program.. Me for instance im in EOPS so i have to meet up with my counselor 3x in a semester and the ed plan is updated every time we meet.. along with course completion and progress report. Mostly every pre nurse student ive met for instance like Anatomy or Psy 101 generally need priority registration.. so they generally know whats the deal..

unless im missing something... which i wouldnt doubt.. lol

what classes are you all taking ??

Alas im glad the waiting list may be less than what i assume.. I have done ALL my classes here from shalah(bio, Micro) Fieckert(anat) Hernandez (chem) Speech (Lee)...

if you guys have any other tips you could think of plz pm me id appreciate it..

go stand outside the admin building at 6:30 a.m. till they open at 8a.m then come and ask.

i'm not an eops student...and don't even know what that is. i'm a grad student re-taking prereqs. i went straight from high school to a university...and never experieced all the long lines at this school.

i don't know what special programs are there in community colleges, or for nursing students/pre nursing. i don't think i need to see a counselor to guide me through my goals. i got my b.a. degree because i know how to read what's needed for graduation.

Then it's a good thing your in school. being able to read does not mean you have all mighty knowledge and intuition I have a B.A as well and I'm a paramedic so I don't see what your point is. Anyhow joining a special program ensures you first priority registration and secondly gives you a student Ed plan so you don't have to wait in long lines to see a counselor and that being said it's much harder to get an appointment fresh off the block but suit yourself. I went to vein for my bachelors and did daniel Freeman program at ucla for my paramedic. I still graciously accept guidance from

Those that A. know the school much better than I would seeing how they work there even though I can too can read the requirements from graduation :)

...and exactly why do I need a special program...or priority registration? I'm done taking my pre-reqs. All I need is an "edu plan."

Paramedic...and now nursing school? Make sure you have an "edu plan," and lots of visits to the counselor. You don't want to be back for a Resp Therapy program taking other people spots.

Well I'll ignore your littlle comments I save lives as a medic and am happy in ICU a RT position is a great job and probably farther along the in the medical field than you have so far.. Utilizing programs that the school offers is ideal. Its good to be self sufficient but taking advantage so you don't have to wait hours at 6am make a lot of sense I know I dont I simy tell the counselor to fa the papers and voiala it's done

If you we're that smart, you would skip the RN...and go into a PA program, which is a two-year as well. I'm assuming you're in ICU because never made it to a fire department?

I love my job as a CNA!!! While in college I was a medical assistant where I was allowed to perform most of what you perform. I worked with great doctors that took the time to train on every surgical procedure.

I would have done something further in the medical field earlier, but I was sooo busy teaching Biology...and Health to middle school students. You know those lesson plans, field trips and grades kept me quite busy ;-) xoxo

Actually had a job offer for LA county fire department and burbank.. Yes PA pays much more.. I agree and I have thought about it.. Reason for me not signing wig fire department is because of cutbacks and of all the people I have graduated from UCLA with most are laid off after being hired.. So I guess I made the right decision. I have taken CNA have that cert with HHA and it is no way comparable or on the same status educational or financial wise.. With all the degrees you have I assumed you knew that. CNA wipes continence and pretty much does what the Lvn or RN and even unit secretary says paramedic doesn't. MA is just as equal except you have a phlebotomy liscense which only thing you can do in the hospital is probably run lab draws. Again not comparable the critical thinking and Meds you can administer are over the heads and scope of practice of wha you mentioned. I doubt they wven know of dysrhytmia or telemetry. But again farther in the field so I can't blame you for being confused.. :) as a CNA you do the grunt work of all personel since CNA is on the lowest of the totem pole I can't blame you for wanting to advance :) xoxo

Ps I wouldn't be surprised if I do go for even higher than that I have taken Chem 110 math 150 (calculus with analytical geometry perhaps I'll go for MD)

I must say I applaud your efforts a a teacher I'm sure you'll make a competent nurse when you get there

If I could, I would stay as a CNA. Again, I like what I do. Nowhere in my post I compaired the CNA to an RN. I'm not that confused!

In last two months, I probably wipped two continence. Which I'll soon forget how to do. Nursing school will kick my __ss if this happens. We're so busy with new admits that I only get the time to place monitors, O2 and re-check vitals...and yes, I do know the heart rhythms--- I took a one-day class ;-)

Oh! The scope of practice of a medical assistant. Well, we work under the supervision of the MDs. They could pretty much have us do as they please, which the case w/ cosmedic surgery. Loved heping the doctors there, I was so tempted to increased my bra size!

No, I don't hold a phebotomy cert! The doctors 90210 didn't ask me for one. I would just draw blood without it. It helped learning to start IV's.

Why nursing if you're thinking MD? Go straight to med school...and rake up all the loans. Think smart, unless you're thinking of specializing, think PA. Family practice won't pay anough for rent and paying off student loans.

I guess I'll see you in nursing school!!!

As you may well probably notice ive been around the medical field jumping arouind... when i retainede my emt paramedic license i wasnt sure if i wanted to fire department or nursing.. hence me doing cna.. i wouldnt do family practice. my persona resides around icu or er.. i like the fast pace/ critical thinking.. but again. going to med school straight takes as you say tons of loans and time. me being single and doing it on my own would rather get paid gradually as i progress in the medical field.. why have a bs is bio science when i can have it in nursing and get paid pretty handsomely.. again though PA has sounded soooo tempting in the past.. but as i see it all the courses that i have taken are applicable to med school and nursing... but in the mean time while i should choose to enter med school working three 12's wouldnt be a bad idea while i rake up lots of loans and have tons of time torwards studying... i must say though i look forward to seeing you in rn school... and judging by your intellect perhaps further if you should so choose to prgroess academically in your career. =0 my uncle has a masters in business from usc and went to avc for the rn degree.. i ask him the same thing.. as you ask me.. and he still doesnt know why he did it.. lol go figure.. but hopefully i dont get too comfortable after i finish this program.
