Anyone take Bio202 at Rio?

The reason I'm asking is I'm studying for the midterm right now and my instructor gave us a 'focus guide' to study from. There just doesn't seem to be a lot of info we 'need' to know for the midterm compared to what the lesson plan usually has. I took 201 through Rio and remember how the midterm and the final were, it just seemed with them that I hadn't studied the right info (even though I did pretty good on them, thanks to the essay portion). Unfortunately, my instructor is very hard on the essay portion so I can't really count on getting the complete 20 points there.

Did your instructors give you this same 'focus guide' and if so was studying that enough to do well on the midterm?

TIA

I'm a Rio student too, but am in Bio156...did anyone else have Mr. Wolcott?

I'm doing the same quality of work that has landed me A's in all of my other classes so far, even my science classes, and in this class I'm lucky if I get a B on an assignment. It's not that I don't understand tha material (at least, I think I do) it's that I "didn't answer that specifically enough", or "yes, that's true, but mention this", even though what he wants mentioned isn't part of the SYL question instructions... I'm beginning to wonder if I can last through Bio201 and 202 if they are going to be like this class...

I think so much of it depends on the individual instructor. I didn't have Wolcott for any of my science classes. I was able to get an A (without a ton of stress or struggle) in 156, and worked hard for my B in 201/202. Good luck to you.

I had Suzanne Thompson in Bio201 and was able to get 100's on all of her SYL's, but my teacher for Bio202 does the same thing as your teacher appears to. I'll answer the question in full, but he wants more details, answers to questions that aren't even asked. I'm actually putting more detail into his SYL questions and am only getting 85-90. I also nailed the SYL ?'s on the midterm, and he only gave me 15.5/20 on it. At this point I'll be glad just to pass and have it over with :uhoh3:

Well, as much as I wish it was smooth sailing for everyone, it is somewhat comforting knowing I'm not the only one having had a difficult teacher experience. I was starting to feel like maybe I wasn't smart enough for this kind of science. I'm hoping that my 156 class is my one hard teacher, and that I get "easier" graders in my 201 and 202 classes. I think I'll be asking for Susan's class next semester! hehe

I had someone named Jennifer (can't remember last name) for bio201 at Rio and she was so nice and I was able to do well on her essays. I am contemplating whether or not I should take 202 at Rio because of what I'm hearing from you guys. And you can't pick your teacher or know in advance who you'll get, I know, I've tried.

I am in the lpn at estrella right now and I realize i should have taken patho at Rio. I was scared out of it because I heard how it was so hard. But I've gotten 98 on my patho tests so far, in block 1. I'm finding it an easy class. Maybe it gets harder in block 2?

PhoenixGirl,

I found I was able to sort of pick my teacher for Bio202 by finding the date I wanted to start and then calling and asking what teacher was teaching that date. I don't know if it's different for summer, maybe there's less teachers, but I started May 16th and there was only one teacher teaching that class. There was another class starting May 30th and I found out that was the teacher I'd been warned against so I went ahead and started May 16th. I have found that 202 is harder for me than 201 was, not sure why though. Some of it is my teacher though. I think I may be starting to get what he wants because I'm finally getting 100's on my essays. Good luck either way.

I had Mr. Wolcott and finished on Sept 4 with a C. I feel like I could have written your message, that is the exact experience I had in that course, it really made me doubt my abilities to continue and knocked my confidence down a notch. I had also landed A's in my previous classes. I am in Bio 201 and 205 now and I feel more confident in these instructors stating their expectations more clearly. I am in semester three of online prereq work and I have definitely noticed a difference in the course experience based on the instructors. Any advise on a good instructor to choose for Bio 202?

I will pm you and give you the name of the instructor to avoid at all costs. I was warned about him and unfortunately he is who I ended up with and I have a 4.0 so I am not dumb and up until now I was extremely confident in my ability to write a college level essay (I got a 90 on one and 100's on the rest in BIO201), but on my first essay assignment he gave me a 24 out of 100.....more in the pm.

I think I must have the same instructor as you...sadly, I was not warned though. I was shocked to get a 45 out of 100 on my first essay assignment since writing has always been my strong point. Like you, I always did really well on those essays in Bio201 and now I'm completely stressed out about the one that's due this week. All I can say is that it's going to be a looong semester!! If anyone has any tips to get through this class, I would really appreciate it! Good luck to you. :)

Bio 202 was a different experience for me than BIO 202. First, I think I had the instructor y'all are talking about. That person made the class a miserable experience. I can always talk about that more in a PM.

What made Bio 202 different? First, it is very poorly written in my opinion. You have to use the CD-ROM for several of the units. Those lessons are very well done - but very, very, VERY long. They also included waaaayyyy too much detail. But the exams, especially the midterm which was harder than the final, tended to randomly pick some of these obscure details for questions. So I was never sure where to draw the line as far as diving too deep on the material. I think the course would be much easier if they would not rely so heavily on the CD-ROM, and instead give us outlines like in the other lessons.

Also, some of the lessons which were very long included several labs. So some weeks you will really clock in the hours getting all of the work done. If you have a certain instructor, this person will read the lab in detail looking for answers that match exactly from the answer key. That makes the labs even more time-consuming - though you can always appeal answers and if you can quote the book, you can get credit back. Time consuming and dumb.

The test your knowledge quizes contain many obscure and irrelevant questions (i.e.: What medical condition is caused by a short lingual frenulum?). Instead of giving us useful review questions, you have to wade through crap like that. Also, several of the answers are wrong - and when I would report errors these were never shared nor corrected. So if an answer strikes you as wrong, confirm with your prof.

So my overall advice is this - grin, bear it, memorize the crap, and move on. Buy lots of index cards, as that was the most efficient way for me to learn massive amounts of material for the exam. Give yourself lots of time to study for the exams, too.

Received my final grade - it's over!!! This is one class I will NOT miss...good luck to everyone else fighting the good fight. If anyone has any questions, etc - just shoot me a PM.

Like all of you, I also took BIO 202 at Rio, I am in week 12 or something...It is just awful... I had BIO 201, Bio 156, and HCC 130 and 145 there also.. With this BIO class, I felt as though I studied everything possible, but still did just OK on the midterm. The questions don't really "match" our books, labs and review sheets...I have learned since the midterm that the TEST questions come from a "Nationally Standarized set of mulitple choice questions designed to overview your knowledge of this portion of the course".:angryfire ... Thats why none of it matches.. These are questions they pretty much pull out of the "air" from about a million little pieces of info we have/ or have not yet learned and all we can do is hope we happened to have studies those parts... My only advice is the same as everyone else- study your essays... AND MOVE ON...

(ps I am taking Micro BIO 205 at Gateway, IN CLASS....)

One more Pre-req to go...then I will start applying.. Good luck to everyone!!!!

Could you PM me with the name of the professor to avoid as well? I did really well in bio 201 and just signed up for 202. I loved my professor for 201!
