I just discovered Quaker Oatmeal Express (The baked apple is my personal fave!) This stuff is awesome! 200 calories and 2.5 gms of fat and scrumptious! It is so easy to cook. I eat at work so that's important to me. You just remove the cover, fill to the inside line with water and nuke for 1 minute. They are only $1.29 each too. Anyone else have any easy breakfast faves for work days?
Jaxrn02 - you are doing yourself and your PT's a great diservice when you teeter on the brink of hypoglycemia. Make 0630 your little rush time when you eat. I won't preach, but even you know about what a decreased level of blood glucose can do to a PT's mental functioning. I know what you mean. Fresh carbohydrates at the start of the shift will pay off 10 fold during the shift with your head being sweet enough to negotate all the mental stuff rn's do. Lol. Maybe think about doing yourself an NG tube in the car as your driving, Lol :-) Or TPN. Lol.
Originally posted by Jaxrn02HELP! I'm having a hard time with breakfast. I can't eat first thing in the morning-I usually work 7-3. If I wait until after I get to work, I usually end up very busy and don't have time to stop until lunch. By then I am starving! I have noticed a big difference on those days I can take a break in the morning and eat. Am I strange?? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
I hear ya gal!
I have my coffee before work and that may be it till "later". I have learned to make up a protein drink of my choice. My favorite is "Source of Life" found at the healtfood store; I like to add a half banana and some frozen fruit. I bought a hand blendar for
$ 10.00 to make it a true smoothy.
Okay, so the drink is green... lol.. but oh do I feel better when I have it. It is loaded with vitamins and fills me up till lunch. I can drink it on the way to work or enjoy it while taking report ( I use a disposable to go cup or one of those shaker cups).
Y gotta have your breakfast girl!
I love fatty fried foods that clog up the arteries. Let me have a 16oz prime rib loaded with the juices and creamy mashed potatoes with a soft dinner roll loaded with butter. That is what I am talking about!
For BREAKFAST?!?!?!
Jaxrn02~ You deserve 15 minutes! I always take 15 right after my morning med pass to sit, relax and have my oatmeal. It took some time, but I learned to MAKE 'me time'.
I also have a hard time eating when I first get up, and I'm always running late anyways so it's not like I'd have time anyways! Once I get to work I know it'll be 2-3 hours before I have time to go on a break.
So I've made breakfast my Slim-Fast time. I buy the drink cans (there are at least 10 flavors now, including cappucino) or meal bars (chocolate chip cookie dough is the best). That way, I always have something easy to grab on my way out the door. I usually eat/drink when I'm almost to work, so by then I've been up for over an hour and can stomach it.
Don't knock it - lowfat, with a good amount of vitamins, minerals, fiber, and 10 grams of protein to boot. I follow the shake or bar with a bottle of water for hydration as well.
This will sound a little weird....but what I do is make a bowl of thick oatmeal with raisans and eat it in the car on the way to work. That keeps me from attacking donuts and whatever other goodie is around when I get to work.
I KNOW I should eat before I leave, but I work out early and food grosses me out for a couple hours afterwards.
yes I know, i'm weird.
These are terrific and travel great when you're rushing out the door. What a great substitute for donuts!
Blender bran muffins
Ingredients
2 medium ripe bananas
1 egg OR egg substitute equivalent to 1 egg
3/4 cup whole wheat flour
1/2 cup skim milk
1/4 cup vegetable oil (I have used 1/4 cup of prune puree or prune baby food or applesauce instead with great results)
1/4 cup apple juice concentrate
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 1/4 cups all-bran (or allbran with extra fiber if you dare!)
1/2 cup raisins -- optional
Procedure
Cut bananas into quarters; place in a blender. Add the next seven
ingredients; cover and process until smooth. Blend in cereal. Stir in raisins if desired. Coat muffin cups with nonstick cooking spray; fill half full. Bake at 400° for 16-18 minutes or until muffins test done.
Makes 1 dozen.
Note: Paper-lined muffin cups are not recommended for this recipe.
MMM - those bran/banana muffins sound great...what a great combo...
For breakfast I have a few faves...
- a hard boiled egg with lots of pepper and salt (I know I know about the salt)
- Plain (no sugar) vanilla yogurt - sometimes with fruit or granola or if I have lots of time a fruit smoothie
- Bacon and side pork....or fresh fruit
- My beloved raisin bagel with raisin/cinnamon/walnut cream cheese filling
- One of my all time FAVES is grits with butter...mmmm

I don't feel like eating first thing in the morning either (I drink several cups of coffee before going to work). But where I work, between 9-10 am everyone goes down to the cafeteria and gets breakfast and brings it back to eat in the lunchroom. That works well because thats when most of us are starting to get hungry. Everyone ususally gets to eat if they want to because if one person is busy, someone else will get their food and bring it back. It works well for me. Then if I am too busy for lunch I don't mind - and I would rather have breakfast than lunch if I have to choose.
