Anyone ever get this told to them? what does this really mean?
I get told that all the time, but not when it comes to the patients, nurses tell me that im too sensitive when being treated badly by another nurse or whenever I have to hear about another nurse gossiping about me behind my back ( which is something I cant stand)
I hate when people say it as a cop out to cover the bad behavior of others. They try to shift the blame and it's absurd.
I guess I have a different take on this. I see "sensitive" as a good thing generally.
When taken too far, I take it to mean taking everything personally.
It means seeing a patient being mean as being mean to you personally rather than just tired, cranky and anxious.
Overly sensitive takes every small criticism to mean others don't like them rather than pointers in improving nursing practice. Then sensitive nurse can feel the victim of hostile nurses trying to "eat" them.
Yep, heard it since I was a wee one. The other favorite of those who object to your objecting to their mistreatment is "You shouldn't take things so personally!" Or... you could maybe just not be a jerk, how's that sound?Man, someday I'm totally going to say that!
I am always a little dumbfounded when someone is totally rude and totally out of line in the way they talk to someone and then blames them for being too sensitive when their feelings get hurt. I don't think people should sugar coat things that need to be said, but there is a huge difference in saying, "Hey Julie...you need to write a little bigger...your tiny writing is really hard to read." and "Julie, you need to go back to grade school and learn to write...no one can read your scribbles!"
I'd rather have a bleeding heart than no heart at all!
Exactly! I'm always told that I wear my heart on my sleeve, so it's out there for everyone to trample on......I'm too sensitive......I take things to personally...and I just want to say "At least I'm not cold-hearted."
I hope you realize that I was being sarcastic in my original post.
I have been accused of this being "too sensetive" a few times(then alternatively I have been told how mean I am...mean, really)
So, I think it is used as a weapon at times by our co-workers, supervisors, and spouses to let us know that they were rude and we should shut up and take it.
If you cry at work daily then you are in the wrong environment or burned out. I was. I left. I am not sensetive anymore!

I cant stand it when im told im too sensitive, what does that mean.! Too sensitive? compared to who? Thats the way I am and im not going to try to change that for anybody.
Thats so sad that in a profession where its suppsed to be about caring for others, us nurses are so cruel to eachother. It doesnt make any sense. And whats the worst is that when someone says oh you can t be a nurse your too sensitive, they are mostly refering to the mistreatment you will get from other nurses!! unbelieveable!!!
