It means that you are not mean and cold-hearted.

and, it means you are not supposed to show any reaction from the many sources of verbal abuse we receive.

Been told that many times...even before I was a nurse. Too bad, I'm sensitive - it makes me a good nurse. I'm not going to change at age 45 :) . Its way better than being cold hearted.

:yeahthat: Heck, I get told it all the time. I can't help it, I'm human. And at least my patients know I care about them.

If your're letting their problems affect your work/homelife/rest of your patients, you aren't controlling yourself well enough, and yes, you're too sensitive.
If you actually care about a situation and do something to ameliorate the problem instead of just closing the door, you are showing appropriate sensitivity.
If you come out of the room and need to cry/vent/talk about it and then go on, you are spot on and doing it right, but the coldhearted ones who are supposed to be supporting you (go team!) but don't want to deal with emotions will tell you "you're too sensitive" which translates as "shut up and leave me alone, I don't want to hear it because I just don't care anymore".
