Ugg.... let me start out by saying this is by no means a slam at those of you taking more than one class..... I'm just venting here....
I am in Anatomy. Yes... it is my ONLY class. But.... I have 3 children, who I take to pre-school, dance, basketball, baby class, and art class. (not to mention things like the zoo, children's museum, etc).... I also volunteer at our hospital and teach Sunday school at church, and my husband travels 80% of the week for his job.... (and these are just "planned" activites... not including Dr. appts, things like that)
And I'm working my butt off in Anatomy. I've studied harder for this class than I did for any of my courses when I received my BS degree.... And even though I'm only taking one class.... I'm getting an A because I'm working hard for it....
I had a girl who is taking 2 courses tell me that she's getting a C/D because she is taking 2 classes at the same time. Ummmm hello.... don't most full time students take 16 credits at a time as it is??? If everyone who was taking a full course load were to get C's and D's.... imagine what the school would be going through???!!!???
Anyway... I just wanted to get that out.... I don't have any "extra" time in my week to study any harder than someone taking more than one class. I just plan and organize my time so that I can fit it in. Granted there are many times when I'm up at 1am having to study.... but I'm doing it! And it's not because it's my only class!
Ok, I feel better now! Thanks for letting me rant!!!!

I am taking anatomy and org. chem concurrently next semester and it will kick my butt. I was going to take just anatomy and it will still kick my butt hehe.
I agree with you 100%. Its not the units or the amount of classes but the content of the classes.
Kids and other responsibilities aside, anatomy would still be time consuming. Good luck and good job.
My mom just graduated the nursing program a couple years ago and took anatomy, micro, and some other classes adding to 19 units and still juggled us. So I definately know what you are going through.

Listen, there will always be someone who finds something to whine about and use as an excuse as to why they aren't doing as well as others. It is a choice. I wanted to get through my classes asap to be finished with this whole journey asap. I took a full load of classes each quarter, am married, have a small child, at times worked, etc... I still ended up with a over a 3.8 GPA. If I had taken one class at a time could I have had a 4.0? Possibly, but it was my decision not to do that. You have to do what works for you and your family. People need to stay out of other peoples business.

I'm jsut taking A&P 2 this semester...will take more credit hours in the Spring because those won't be science classes. Who cares how many classes you take as long as you make the grade? Everybody is different and has things going in their lives. I've seen it too many times that students assume A&P, Micro and chem will be "easy" not realizing that those are "weedout" courses...some professors make these classes extremely hard and almost impossible to get A's in. This is no joke but in my A&P1 class it was only me and another guy who survived to the final. Everyone else "died" on the way We studied our butts off and it seemed more than a 4 credit hour class...more like a 6 or 8 credit hour class because of the amount of time that we needed to spend out of the class room just to get what we got. The poor guy got a B in the end and was very disappointed, and it was sad to witness because he was young and bright. He had too many credit hours total and we all know that a day has only 24 hours so there you have it, he didn't get what he anticipated ...I made an A because I was able to give it the time it required....(other instructors told me that I am 'special' since nobody makes and A with that particular instructor).....It's wise to plan your time well. The science classes are way too important to take chances on since many schools frown upon repeats and failures. Keep going at your pace and good luck....we will all eventually get there.

oh ya I have heard that too and heard it from nursing dept admin one time. She said people were getting around the "system" by taking one class at a time and getting A's. I begged to differ. there might be a random person that goes about school that way, but with the huge long waits to get in it takes years to get just pre reqs out of the way, most people take 1 or 2 classes at a time because they already have a FULL TIME load in something else, work, family or both. I too have 3 small kids, a husband that travels and I am very involved in my church. I am taking full load this semester which is 2 classes. its 10 credits as they are both lab sciences but I have gotten this far by taking one class at a time, inbetween "life". I go to a CC and most people I know are doing the samething as most are grown proffesionals working full time or caring for famiies. I understand how it gets under your skin but try and shrug it off you won't see that person in nursing school with c/d's they will have to learn the hard way they aren't putting enough into it and even at one class at a time still wouldn't be passing.

Everyone has a lot already on their plates, and that is the main thing that should be remembered. Those who choose to take one class probably have to, not that they just want to. I doubt seriously that they want to take 5 years to get into the program if they didnt have to.
My first semester back, I decided two classes were all I would be able to handle, because I also have a lot on my plate, and I got my A's.
Summer semesters were killers. I took one class then(4 weeks each semester) and am taking two this semester, so far with A's. Next semester, I finally get to take one, because it is my last one I need. I am kind of relieved because I have heard so many horror stories about microbiology. I will be taking a CNA class for 3 weeks, and that will be over with before my first microbiology exam.

thats sounds like a great plan! I wish we were offered a short term CNA course ours is a full semester and its full time, I guess they are well trained but I just can't devote a whole semester to that right now I wish I could as I know it would be a great asset and I could use the extra money while waiting.

At my CC once you hit the science classes they ARE one class at a time. First you have to take inorganic chem, then you can take o-chem, then you can take A&P 1, then you can take A&P 2 and micro (together if you so choose). But you can't take A&P until you have both chem's done and you can't take micro until you have both chem's and 5 credits of a biological science.
I have finished all of my humanities/math prereqs so after I finished inorganic chem (I took my last math class when I was in inorganic chem) I was down to one class at a time. Not b/c I wanted to get an A (I do want an A) but b/c the science classes were all that I needed and that is the way my CC set them up. I was not going to waste my time and money taking classes that I did not need just to look tough and say "oh I am sooo cool taking 20 credits everyone look at me, if your only taking one class you suck".
The majority of the people at my CC are older with kids and they work full time. They are only taking one to two classes a quarter. I harbor no ill feelings for them. I am just happy that they have decided to go back to school so that they can persue their dreams and hopefully make a better life for themselves and their families. Of course I make good grades so I am not looking for someone to blame for my poor performance academically.
However on the flip side, in one class, on the first day, there was a woman who sat next to me. We were chit chatting and she said (out of the blue mind you) "I hate those B*%#$@$ who live at home with mommy and daddy and have them pay for everything! They don't have to work just go to school make good grades and they are the ones who get in!" I was flabbergasted and never talked to her again. So I guess it goes both ways. Say la vie (sp). All you can do is worry about you. Keep your nose to the grind stone and put one foot in front of the other and you will get there!!!! Good luck in A&P!

They are just ignorant. Do not listen to them. I'll be taking two classes next semester and those are my last two prereq classes. I expect to get As and Bs not only because they are my only two but also because I will be studying my ass off.

oh it sure does! but you hit the nail on the head its students doing poorly looking for "someone" else to blame for their own poor performance.
I have a couple youngsters in my class living at home that I do want to shake though LOL. living at home fooling around not working hard I have one as a lab partner always coming in late actually sleeps in class I told her to knock it off or she will end up like me Working double time with family and kids its so much easier the other way LOL. Just to be fair I also have some youngsters in my chem lab I am partners with that are awesome I have so much fun with them and then I found out their mom is my age Hehehee. she just graduated nursing a couple years ago.

Well, this may be a politically unpopular statement, but it doesn't really matter why people are taking only one class, and I'm not saying you don't have to study to get an A, you do, no question on that.
However, any way you slice it, it is easier to get a higher grade the fewer classes you take. You don't have demands of other professors interfering with your study time.
I started at a college this fall taking 16 hours and withdrew, that was 5 classes, because in 4 of them, I had tests EVERY SINGLE DAY and all were reading intensive. I absolutely could not manage that and I thought it was ridiculous. There isn't enough hours in the day to do all of that! It's not like I could do a little in each class and then spend 2 to 3 days focusing on one class for a large exam and then set that class aside of a couple of days to catch the other classes up. Nope, it was reading for retention and you only got one shot at the tests and we didn't go over the material until AFTER the test....yup, most ridiculous thing I ever saw in my college career and that is why I'm changing schools...the other one doesn't do crazy stuff like that.
So heck yeah it's easier to take one class at a time. People can get mad if they want, but it's the truth.
