You are only taking one class.... It's no wonder you are getting an A!

Ugg.... let me start out by saying this is by no means a slam at those of you taking more than one class..... I'm just venting here....

I am in Anatomy. Yes... it is my ONLY class. But.... I have 3 children, who I take to pre-school, dance, basketball, baby class, and art class. (not to mention things like the zoo, children's museum, etc).... I also volunteer at our hospital and teach Sunday school at church, and my husband travels 80% of the week for his job.... (and these are just "planned" activites... not including Dr. appts, things like that)

And I'm working my butt off in Anatomy. I've studied harder for this class than I did for any of my courses when I received my BS degree.... And even though I'm only taking one class.... I'm getting an A because I'm working hard for it....

I had a girl who is taking 2 courses tell me that she's getting a C/D because she is taking 2 classes at the same time. Ummmm hello.... don't most full time students take 16 credits at a time as it is??? If everyone who was taking a full course load were to get C's and D's.... imagine what the school would be going through???!!!???

Anyway... I just wanted to get that out.... I don't have any "extra" time in my week to study any harder than someone taking more than one class. I just plan and organize my time so that I can fit it in. Granted there are many times when I'm up at 1am having to study.... but I'm doing it! And it's not because it's my only class!

Ok, I feel better now! Thanks for letting me rant!!!!

The other students are using it as a coping mechanism to make themselves feel better about their grade.

2-3 hours a day? A week? A semester?

If I know this is what I need to do, I will factor it in when scheduling the classes and make sure I can work my schedule around extra lab time. Well I'm not going to be doing A&P for about another year anyway, given my current life situation.

I would say I average that a week of outside lab hours. My class gets over at 2pm I usually stay till about 4 sometimes more sometimes less, I also make time to come in during the week if I have a project I am working on, we had 3 big ones this semester. Histology, bones and muscles. Bones by far you could not do out side the lab as I mentioned before. Sometimes when I stayed after too it wasn't all just for the lab sometimes I would just stay as a nice quiet place to study, husband was home with the kids and the class empties at 2 it was very bennificial study time.

I was lucky that in my class, part of our scedualed time was about 4 hours a week in the lab with the teacher, right after our lecture, so we got ample time to study the bones or muscles in person, and we got pretty much open access to the cadaver during class. This made review on the internet helpful as it was extra study time for me. I agree that the internet alone would not help nearly as much, hard to visualize the detailes if you hav'nt held them in person.

2-3 hrs a week, at a minimum in A&P.

In Micro it could be as much as an entire Monday morning depending on how the tests and stains came along, particularly when we started to work on our unknown specimen ;)

This is what went on in my A&P2 class today just to give you an example. we have 4 lecture and 3 labtests and one final, all tests count the same and we can drop one except the final....our last labtest is next Wednesday, people who haven't spent extra time in lab are opting to drop that particular test and rather put all they got into lecture test 4 which will be on Friday. However here is the catch: he hasn't even finished lecturing for lecture test 4 and will do so on Monday, it's a lot of information and i feel it is not enough time to study for and do well.... I can live without doing so well on lecture test 4 since I have a high average in the class. The lab tests are much "easier" than the lecture tests because it's strict memorization of TONS of structures on fetal pig, slides and pictures, only few general questions. There is just no way around it you got to study study study and then some more. Our final is the following monday and he has already announce not to expect the same questions from previous tests....study notes!!!! More study study study . All together it's 3 tests in the upcoming 11 days (and each day only has 24 hrs) in ONE class. One student said today that she isn't as successful in this class as she would like (wants to go to medical school) because she doesn't have the extra hands-on time to spend outside class time on lab, her lecture test results aren't enough to give her an A. It's very important to plan ahead and adjust your life so that you have enough time for the class once you sign up for it. Plan well and you will get a competitive grade...don't be fooled, in most nursing schools it has to be A's and nothing less to get in. The key is to get competitive grades or you will only waste your time and money. This isn't to torture you, just plain: "How to get into nursing school reality". I wish you the best of luck!

The same here, home is not always the best place to study.....too many distractions. Even my furry :monkeydance: family members can get in the way. We have a nice study lab and have everything available including the pigs ;) so we can study at our leisure....I'll meet a friend tomorrow morning for study group.
