You Just Weren't the Right Fit

Published

I just did my first orientation weekend at a new job. Our first night there, we went over paperwork and that was all. On night two, we worked on the floor. I was assigned to work with another nurse and we split the load evenly. I have to admit, I was afraid. I haven't been on the floor in close to two years and I have never worked with detox patients. My former experience was with psychiatric adolescents. My cohort seemed very unhappy to be stuck with me. She would disappear for long periods of time and no one would no where to find her. I would have to ask other nurse's for assistance in getting into the med room and following CIWA procedure. I woke up to a lovely letter from HR saying that they just didn't think I was a fit for their facility. I feel like I got the short end of the stick. Has small town living just jaded me into believing that the world needs good nurses?

I think, for whatever reason, they didn't think you were a good nurse :(. It sounds like a really crappy thing to happen and I would also be pretty hacked off. I'm sorry you were in this situation and hope you find a new and better position asap. You may have had a lucky escape if that is how they treat new people.

I think you dodged a bullet.

I agree that you may not have wanted to end up working there anyways if they only have you one day and showed you the door. I would at least reflect on what you could have done different just for your own constructive criticism and apply that to your next job. It stinks when your orientating with someone who doesn't want to do it and you have to go the extra mile with that since obviously they will be giving a report of that to your boss.

Ditto to what the PPs all said.

I'd like to add...how stinkin' cowardly of them to send you a LETTER telling you this. Dang, fire me to my face!

They probably didn't want to give OP the opportunity to tell them what was wrong with their "good fit" nurses.

So true. I don't think you were a good fit for your preceptor for whatever the reason. I wonder if half the work in starting a new job is how well you can relate to the person that will train you. Still, management in this place was weak. They took her word, instead of investing time or discovering the problem. This place was not worth investing time in. I hope you find a kinder and fair employer in the future.

You probably were not a good fit. Be thankful, there is better out there for you.

Hard to see now, but these things tend to work out in the long run. There will be other and better opportunities for you.
