i'm so determined to become a lvn.
i'm 19 years old and i have a baby boy that is 14 months.
i'm thinking about attending premiere college in irwindale, california.
for the past 2 years even before i had a baby, i've looked at many schools,
and different options.
i'm so scared because i don't if i'll be able to keep up with everything
if i have to attend to my son!
has anyone ever got through this and have any tips for me?
i don't think i want to go to a community college and wait for the lottery to get into a class.
any suggestions. i would really appreciate it.
i've been too shy to post anything
for about 3 years reading this site.

Susan,
All things are possible if you are willing to work hard and sacrifice. If this is what you truly want, then you must fight for it. Nursing school is extremely challenging, but with the right support I am sure you will be able to fulfill your dreams. Good luck to you!!!

Nursing school is expensive, stressful, and very challenging with very little room for error. Attendance will be extremely important, especially during clinicals. If you want to be a Nurse your going to have to set priorities. This means for the next several months/years you will have 0 social life, 0 money, 0 time.
Don't worry though, the rewards of Nursing far outweigh the challenges.
You need to locate and organize your resources for childcare and living expenses.
Just out of curiosity why LVN vs RN?

of course you will have to attend to your son - you're the mother.
only you know if you have the fortitude to make it through school.
that said, if you do not have reliable transportation, child care that you can count on, family members that you can lean on for support, and all the other things you are going to need to make it through graduation, then think fast and hard about the timing of your decision.

There is a 19 year old in my LPN class with a little girl thats about 15 months old.. She also works. The hardest part is probably having a sitter when you need one. She is doing well and we are graduating in march.. I'm 25 with a 2 year old I go to school 20 hrs a week and work 40.. It's do-able! Whatever you put your mind to you can accomplish! :-) Good luck!

It's hard work I have a 2 daughters a 3 year old and a 1 year old...with being a mother that is always a number one priority..nursing school is hard I'm taking my prerequisites now and unexpected things like a sick kid or late sitter or sumthing may come up but it keeps me on my toes...but being a mother and becoming a nurse are the two most compassionate things you could do..just keep working hard and be positive and you will succeed trust me...
p.s. 70% of nursing students are mothers...

I was 23 years old with a drunk for a husband (might have well been a single mother, he was of no help), had kids aged 3, 2 and actually gave birth to the third one at the end of my first quarter in LPN school. I finished on time with my class. It was hard, it was annoying, I didn't get to spend enough quality time with my kids for that year.
However, now, twenty five years later, my LPN has kept my kids fed, clothed and doctored. (I now have a different better husband, total of 5 kids, two in college now, the next two starting in 2010). I have done SNF, Rehab, hospital, private duty and agency work. Now, having paid my dues, I work for an insurance company, and do not see patients.
You can do it, and you and your child will be better off for it in the long run. You will not have time for dates (neither for romance or for girls' day out). You will go to school and tend to your baby and that will be your life for one year.
I remember sitting at the kitchen table at my typewriter (back in the dinosaur days), nursing my baby, one kid on the floor at my feet playing, the third child hanging off my shirt tail, and typing a paper with one hand. :typing It can be done. Just be prepared mentally for the sacrifices you will make. It will be worth it in the end.

Hi Susan
I usually do not post personal info but want to encourage you on your journey.I had my daughter at 19 and went to school to become an LPN.I also worked full time as a CNA as well.I have been an LPN for the last almost 8 yrs.I went to school when my daughter was about your sons age.It can be done,I am proof. With hard work and determination you can suceed.I thank God everyday that I did go to school as we live comfortably.I am by no means rich lol but I can provide for my daughter and myself which is a good feeling. If I can be of any assistance let me know,Good luck in your journey!:redpinkhe

Hey Susan!
Of course you can do it. I'm 20 years old and have a 2 year old:heartbeat AND I am almost done with my first semester of LPN school. Like everyone else said you will not have a life but you have to make that sacrifice. I get to be with my baby everyday but when it's time to study...... IT'S TIME TO STUDY!!!!!
Good Luck with your decision and just remember if you set your mind to it you can do it!:loveya:

I say go for it! Get in where you can, so long as you are comfortable with the school and it seems like a decent program...I chose the private route as well, got accepted, and almost done with my 2nd week btw! 49 more to go lol! I just can't wait on a lottery. I actually have all my RN prereqs done but you know how that goes with the impacted lotteries....I don't have quite a 4.0 or the experience to make up for it to get into Sac State, my grades are pretty good though....so I decided to start with LVN. I have a young child, am on unemployment, it's tough...but I have a wonderful guy and my family behind me and it will be worth it in the end!:)

I too am a mother, had back surgery and had a multitude of other things that could have hindered me while attending school but I made it!!! I am the same one that was depressed from the DMV area and guess what my preceptorship site offered me a job!! It can all be done I finish with school officially on Monday! I made it, with support and hard work it can be done but you have to be ready to make sacrifices. It's not going to be easy, some nights you may cry be ready to kick and scream bt in the end it will be worth it. I too went to private school because it was too hard to get in the RN programs in this area.
