Yale GEPN 2020

Published

Hi All,

I have been on the lookout for the 2020 thread but figured that I'll have to create one. I am sorry if there is one that I am not aware of.

I am a 2020 hopeful that is looking to make a career switch. I was at one of the information sessions where I gained further insights on the application process and the program. I took the GRE yesterday and was around the 50th percentile for both Q&V.

One of the changes to this years' requirements is that you don't need the GRE if you already have a masters degree or would complete one before the start of the 2020 session. I haven't taken the major prerequisites, but I will take and complete them in the summer of 2020.

I will start talking to my recommenders from next week, I have a tentative list that I composed with a view of having them tell different stories about my candidacy.

May I crave the indulgence of both current and past GEPNs and the benevolence of prospective class of 2020 to make this thread the best one yet. Your views and insights are welcome and appreciated!

Hi @selialy and @ACoolGoose, thanks for your feedback. I was just a little worried they might not have the correct email address to notify me regarding application updates but my portal email is correct so ¯\(ツ)/¯ .

Have you checked your spam yet? Or maybe they send this by specialty.

Yes, I checked all of my folders so it might be by specialty or because I live on the west coast and most likely wouldn't be able to make it...?

Hi Valeriee11- I also live on the west coast and received the email about Scholars Day back on Nov 8th. The email was sent by Jospeh Korevec.

Thank you again Ohm108, RN. Yes, I would like to take the classes to prepare myself for the program.

Can't believe we have another month or so until interview decisions. The wait is agonizing! Anyone have any great books they recommend? One of my favorite medical books is Being Mortal by Atwul Gawande.

Hope you all are finding some time to relax while we wait!

I personally recommend Becoming by Michelle Obama. It's not a medical book but overall a great read and anything by the late, great Dr. Maya Angelou or Dr. Brene Brown. Outside of class and work I've been listening to a lot of ted talks, spending time with family and friends and napping when I can haha.

I took a forensic psychology class last semester and we were required to read three books, and I actually liked one of them so much. It's Just Mercy by Bryan Stevenson.

The time seems to be flying by though, its already the middle of November. From what i was told they're looking to start interviews the first week of December. What is everyone’s speciality? Mine is Psych.

Has anyone gone to the Scholar's Day? Would you mind sharing some information about this event? I couldn't make it but really want to know how things went. Thanks!

Hey I attended the session and it was very informative. Dr. Linda Honan and Phil were the facilitators. I think we were all blown away by how awesome they both were. I personally loved how passionate they both were about nursing education.

We had a mini lecture from Dr. Honan and Phil also went over their expectations.

Biggest take homes were they warned us that their program was very fast paced and they needed students who were up for it. Phil did say the GRE counted but said they looked holistically at each applicant. So if let’s say your gre was bad your essays and LORs, health care experience and gpa could make up for it. He did say anything below 20th percentile could be a red flag but again not absolute. He did say experience and knowing the role of the np for your specialty counted and should reflect in the essay. Just give them enough armor to fight for you when they sit to deliberate. They did also say high GPAs and test scores didn’t mean you were safe either they wanted people who could actually be good NPs and high grades can’t guarantee that. Over all the school is top quality and they really do invest in every student to be successful. And yea they said FNP and midwifery typically got the most applicants but psych was definitely picking up pace. Hope this helped. Good luck to everyone!

@Doulaseason Thanks so much for your info. I'm glad to hear that they do put lots of efforts in every students and help them grow and learn. Now is just the waiting game for the interview...
