Yale GEPN 2020

Published

Hi All,

I have been on the lookout for the 2020 thread but figured that I'll have to create one. I am sorry if there is one that I am not aware of.

I am a 2020 hopeful that is looking to make a career switch. I was at one of the information sessions where I gained further insights on the application process and the program. I took the GRE yesterday and was around the 50th percentile for both Q&V.

One of the changes to this years' requirements is that you don't need the GRE if you already have a masters degree or would complete one before the start of the 2020 session. I haven't taken the major prerequisites, but I will take and complete them in the summer of 2020.

I will start talking to my recommenders from next week, I have a tentative list that I composed with a view of having them tell different stories about my candidacy.

May I crave the indulgence of both current and past GEPNs and the benevolence of prospective class of 2020 to make this thread the best one yet. Your views and insights are welcome and appreciated!

@anon246 - thanks for the information. Sucks to hear that the NurseCorp are losing funding for new scholarship. I wonder why that's the case.

@MaleNP No problem, feel free to double check all my research, would be great if you find things have changed. I just called all the medical officer numbers for each branch of the military (Army, Navy, AF) and searched the NurseCorp website to find they lost the funding.

Hii I too plan on applying for the nurse corps scholarship. I just called the HRSA office and they said they had not cut funding for the 2020-2021 school year (for new applicants). It was just closed for the previous year. She even cross checked with her supervisor to confirm. So I guess that’s some good news for us.

Hey! I was reading their requirements on the HRSA page and it looks like we wouldn't be able to apply until first completing the RN portion. ? See below:

Direct/Entry Level Degree Master’s Program:

Admits students with baccalaureate degrees in other disciplines and "No" previous nursing education. Program prepares graduates for entry into the nursing profession and awards a master’s degree in nursing (MSN).

Eligible: Graduate Entry into Nursing Program, which confers to degrees (BSN, then a MSN). If applicant has completed the BSN portion of the program, is accepted/enrolled in the MSN/NP portion, and applied for MSN/NP funding.

Not Eligible: If applicant is in the BSN portion of the program, but they applied for MSN/NP funding, therefore they are not eligible to receive funding because they are not enrolled in the MSN/NP program.

Question. Maybe because I am just weirdly technical. But isn’t Yale’s program considered a masters program all through and after GEPN year you don’t technically receive a BSN but just get a certificate to usher you into specialty year? Maybe im overthinking it. Because I think at the information session there was a student who was in her GEPN year and said she received it.

For those who are not veterans like my self and learning we may not qualify for nurse corps, are there other scholarship programs that give substantive amounts of money? If possible we can all share ideas.

I wouldn't rule out Nurse Corps scholarships yet unless you called them and clarified that Yale is ineligible. Here's an excellent list of programs and ideas:

Also working part-time during the masters portion you should be able to pay back some of your loans i would think.

I am also considering on applying for nurse corps scholarships. However, I am worried that I will not be awarded anyway because of its high competitiveness + my efc is not below 5000. The website indicates that they will most likely to give scholarships to applicants with efc between 0 and 5000.

9 more days until we hear back from admissions.

did anyone here also apply to Columbia?

Does anyone know how admissions notifies us about acceptances/rejections? For example, would it be done through a portal update or an email? I have another interview shortly after they notify us and I would prefer not to know until that interview is over!

@Barbiegirl1229 I also applied to Columbia and UPenn as well! What specialty did you apply to?
