The personal statement and goal statement would be two different approaches. For my personal statement, I went deeply into where I was born what I thought my life would be before I came to discover mental health issues and how once I moved to the United States I knew thats what I truly wanted to do. I spoke more about the different challenges and how my travels helped me discover my true self both strengths and weaknesses. I tied it up in the end by telling them how everything in my life had brought me here and why I know UCSF was the best place for me. Goal statement was more of how I came to find nursing practice after I already knew I wanted to be in psychiatry and just needed to figure out in what capacity I wanted to serve. You need to know EXACTLY what a nurse practitioner does and the SCOPE OF PRACTICE. Theres something specifically that sets a NP aside from a PA and MD. If you can figure it out your essay would be so much more meaningful. I won't be allowed to tell you. an NP is more than a clinician and You would need to find out what else they do in the community. Then tell them what you wish to achieve as an NP. You will sound more genuine if you are able to tie each goal with something youve done in the past to reaffirm that goal. Finally tell them why UCSF specifically. don't generalize it do the research. Write these essays seriously and honestly because I can promise should you make it to the interview you won't be able to bs your way or fake it. They will grill you. Goodluck! and I ended up going to Yale again only because they offered me a very very generous scholarship I couldnt turn down. It broke my heart to not go to UCSF.

Hi Everyone I applied last year for psych, got in but ultimately went to another school only because they offered me a generous scholarship. Im happy to answer any questions you may have. But for those applying to other schools honestly know UCSF is the benchmark. If you can atleast get an interview here you will most certainly be accepted to another school. Good luck!!

I didn't see the ranking by specialty but I did see they dropped from 5th to 14th as a school

did anyone see the new ratings? I am still sold on going to Yale but was wondering why the school dropped on the ratings.

hi @colleens0807, what I can deduce from the information session I attended was the program is frankly expensive. Very expensive. For the two years you would be spending in the school you're looking at about 150K in tuition alone. The lady from financial aid who spoke to us was candid enough to tell us they didn't give a lot of financial aid. So technically my guess is, with the current situation, lets assume they only have about 120 spots for the entire cohort. It wouldn't be very prudent to only accept about 150 students and put out a long waiting list. Instead you will accept a wider number and hope a good number would accept their offers considering a lot of other students who are good enough to get in may also be accepted to other schools who may have more to give in financial aid. Vanderbilt is a top school especially for the psych np program, I was blown away when I visited. but they know the top candidates would always have options. So the goal would be to attract as many as they can.

Most of the scholarship opportunities don't open till later in the year. So you really shouldn't feel uneasy as there could be enough time to start applying.

For those who are not veterans like my self and learning we may not qualify for nurse corps, are there other scholarship programs that give substantive amounts of money? If possible we can all share ideas.

Hiii! I think its important for us all to stay optimistic. I attended the information session later last year and we were told the part they really used to weed out applicants is the applicant's understanding of the scope of practice for his or her specialty. So for example if you are in the family NP track, you cant write that you only want to work with children or only adults as it makes them think you dont understand that family practitioners work with populations across the lifespan. Also for what its worth, last year 668 people applied with the BA/BS non nursing degrees and 433 were admitted out of which 158 enrolled. So that is something to really be hopeful about. We got this!

I used a laptop. it allowed me to be more comfortable and poised. If you are very comfortable with the ipad you can but be sure you are prepared to act swiftly should any technical difficulties occur. You got this!
