Yale GEPN 2019

Published

Like midwifery students of past years, I as well have fallen in love with Yale's GEPN Midwifery program. This question is about the personal statement.

Ive been told that this is the most important part of the application, and that it should tell your story. This was said by Dr. Korevec during the informational, so I'm fairly confident in knowing that's what they want. It should explain why Yale and why nursing. However, whenever someone proofreads my personal statement, they know I'm applying to Yale and say it reads too much like a story and not like a college application essay. It's happened like 3 times and now I'm not sure what to do. Any advice?

thanks!

Accepted for PMHNP! ? Anyone considering going to an admitted student day?

Also, just to clarify, for those doing GEPN-FNP, is this the correct timeline for how the calendar would go? Start this fall and finish end of next summer, take NCLEX, start MSN study and do fall, spring, summer (off), fall, spring?

This might be helpful to you to help you plan out your year.

Nmf89—I also got zero scholarship money. It’s really hard to stomach the thought of approximately $160,000 of debt for tuition alone (especially since most of the debt would have to be through private lenders). I also got accepted to SUNY Stony Brook’s ABSN program, which costs loss than one semester of YSN. I’ve been looking into private scholarships, and I’m going to call YSN’s financial aid office, but I have a lot of soul-searching to do over the next three weeks.

Congrats to everyone! I’m so beyond thrilled and grateful to have received good news this week! I really appreciate everyone sharing their insights and couragement throughout this process.

I just received an email from YSN Financial Aid- no scholarship/gift for me. It also looks like their tuition is climbing at a steady rate per. Does anyone know if there’s a way to appeal a financial aid decision? The price tag as it stands is simply not feasible for me. Of course I’m looking into other funding options like private’s scholarships (nothing that will amount to $60,000/year ?) and plan to apply to Nurse Corps, but I don’t think we’d be informed about an award prior to when I’d need to make a decision about enrolling, not to mention it’s pretty hard to get! I would love to hear your thoughts/gameplan/etc.! Thanks!

ps- thanks for making an fb group!! I can’t find “Yale GEPN 2019”

I believe it is only $60,000 for the first year due to the extra summer in GEPN and the next 2 years are $40,000 each. I may be wrong, but hopefully I'm right!

I found this page (https://nursing.yale.edu/admissions/costs-and-financial-aid/tuition-and-fees-2019-2020) and this pdf (https://nursing.yale.edu/sites/default/files/files/YSN_TuitionFees 2019-2020(1).pdf) super helpful.

After the GEPN year, it's about $22,000 per semester (though this will probably rise a bit every year). If tuition doesn't rise at all, it would be a total of $149,420 in tuition costs if you do the program full-time.

Thank you for the info! Does anyone know of they offer aid each year? Or is the amount we got for the entire program?

Also is anyone planning to go to new student admit day? Are you guys bringing someone or just going alone?

hmmm i didn't receive anything from financial aid. anyone else not hear back?

I didn’t receive anything from financial aid yet nor have I heard anything about admitted students’ day ?

I hear about the admitted students day but nothing from financial aid. sort of getting nervous lol. even checked my spam just in case

Oh I just checked my spam and I have something from admitted students day. Still nothing from financial aid though.

@Peaches thanks for calculating! I think it's pretty safe to assume that they'll continue raising tuition each year (though other schools like Columbia have made mention of the fact that they may raise tuition each year too). Good luck with your decision and soul searching. Hopefully you've had a chance to connect with seasoned NPs and fresh NP grads to get some perspective about what to prioritize (and would love to hear your thoughts on this!)

@Lmt2019 I'm pretty sure the scholarship is per year. I spoke to Dr. Korvac about this a couple weeks ago, but def best to confirm with him directly!

@hogwarts2020 and @ChocolateTherapy - call them re:financial aid email! They should still be open. New admits days are Jan 25th and Feb 8th, from 8am- 2pm. Planning to go on Feb 8th.

On tuition costs, I think some people are able to work as RNs their 2nd and 3rd year in the Yale program, defraying some of the cost. Tuition is pricey, but job prospects and pay are really strong coming out of Yale's GEPN program. In my area (Boston) hospitals pay nurse practitioners 125-140K.

It's a good investment, one that will pay dividends for a lifetime. I know people who spend 160K on a kitchen or basement remodel, and those investments certainly don't have anywhere near as good a return. The key is to borrow as little as possible outside of paying for tuition.
