Like midwifery students of past years, I as well have fallen in love with Yale's GEPN Midwifery program. This question is about the personal statement.
Ive been told that this is the most important part of the application, and that it should tell your story. This was said by Dr. Korevec during the informational, so I'm fairly confident in knowing that's what they want. It should explain why Yale and why nursing. However, whenever someone proofreads my personal statement, they know I'm applying to Yale and say it reads too much like a story and not like a college application essay. It's happened like 3 times and now I'm not sure what to do. Any advice?
thanks!
Thank you! I think it went well. Now the waiting...
I do have a question for current students (or any prospies that may know).
So, I know that YSN does not require any pre-reqs but I'm sure a lot of us have already taken some science classes for other places or are in the process. Are they transferrable in any way? Or are the courses needed for GEPN pretty unique to GEPN?

Are you asking if your pre-reqs can be used in place of the classes you will be taking at YSN thus shortening your time in the program? The general answer is no. You have to take all the classes even if you have pre-reqs you have taken previously. Most pre-reqs would also normally be undergraduate level courses so they wouldn't be able to replace the graduate level courses you will be taking at YSN. If they were graduate nursing courses, you can double check with the GEPN team but even if you could transfer the credits you would still have to take the classes. You would just have more credits on your transcript.
If you are asking whether you can take first year GEPN and transfer to another school with the classes you took at YSN the first year, the general answer is no or the school you are transferring to might allow a transfer of a few units but not all of the classes. Each program is unique and each state also has its own requirements as well. So where you are transferring to and the structure of the program will need to be taken into consideration. I am sure you know this already but YSN does not offer a BSN after your first year, you will only get a certificate that you have met all the requirements to sit for the CT NCLEX after you have completed all your hours and requirements. YSN from beginning to end is a graduate nursing program unlike other programs who will give you both a BSN/MSN.
Hope that helps.
I was asking if pre-reqs can be used in replacement of the first-year YSN classes. So sorry for being so unclear but you answered my question perfectly. Thank you!!
You are very welcome. Let me know if you or any prospective students have any more questions. We are in the middle of finals and about to finish our first semester but I will try to get back to everyone as quickly as possible.
I almost feel out of my chair when I saw "YSN: GEPN Decesions..." in the subject line. We'll have our answer so soon!
Sandy is such a delight. It was so kind of her to say "one decision does not define you". If you are like me, this whole process has been anxiety ridden, it is nice to be reminded that we are on this path for a reason and just because one school doesn't accept you it doesn't mean we aren't on the right path.
Good luck with finals for whoever is taking them (3 more to go for me, ugh). Only 35 days until we'll know one way or another!
Anyone else having FAFSA problems?
I already filled out the FAFSA as a 5th-year undergraduate (because the rest of the direct-entry programs give you a BSN before the MSN, and some specifically said to apply this way), but I saw that Yale wants us to apply as graduate students.
How are you all handling this? I can't seem to find any way of filling out two separate FAFSAs...

Maybe it's safe to assume they're wrapping up interviews next week then?
