Hi all!
I didn't see a Yale GEPN 2016 thread, so I thought it would be good to start one! Does anyone know the average GPA and GRE score for the 2015 entering class?
Does anyone know the best way to get from downtown/ the main Yale campus to west campus? The shuttle routes are really confusing for someone who knows nothing about the area I'm from San Francisco so pretty much rely on uber/lyft for everything but want to make sure at least thats an option!! :)
There's an app called transloc that gives you all the shuttle locations in real time. I don't know exactly where you are staying but the shuttle runs pretty regularly. You can find the routes nearby you when you get here with the app. Also if you email MP with where you are staying she will be super helpful with what shuttle you should take. You'll be green or purple shuttle lines though. They serve west campus. http://westcampus.yale.edu/sites/default/files/files/West-Campus-Schedule-2014-May.pdf Or if you want to message me with where you are staying I can try to help.
Well, I just confirmed my interview for a phone/skype one. I really wish I could make it to the campus, but I figure my money would be better saved for actually paying for school (I would be flying from CA). I've been emailing someone from admissions and she said that they can send out an overview of all the information sessions for those doing phone interviews. Fingers crossed that I can interview well over the phone, thats probably what I'm most nervous about.
Hi everyone! I'm interviewing for the midwifery specialty on Feb 5th. Anyone else have a Feb. 5th interview date?
I booked a room on airbnb for Friday and Saturday night. Its in an apartment with former GEPN students in East Rock, so I'm really looking forward to hearing their experiences and advice. Can anyone who is in the program tell me about the social life on campus? Where do most students in the GEPN program live? I've heard either East Rock or Downtown. Anyone have a preference? What should I do during my weekend on campus to get to know the community?
Any other potential students staying for the weekend to experience the community?
Hey Ariellebelle,
The vast majority of us live in East Rock, a neighborhood adjacent to downtown. I am one of those and it's really nice to be so close to everyone and everything. A few people live there or in Wooster Square, as well. But we also have a few people that live outside of New Haven - one girl even commutes from Westchester everyday. My understanding is that the commute can be long and crappy but since our lectures are recorded, they use their time in the car to study those.
I can't speak for anyone else's social life, but mine was limited mostly to nursing school activities. My roommates and I promised ourselves that we would go out once a month. Study groups were a major source of social time. I didn't really go out too much simply because I felt too tired and busy, although when I did I went to the grad school bar, Gypsy because it's dirt cheap. The dating scene is pretty strong here, too.
I realized that in my past post, I offered to give suggestions about what to do/see, but I haven't had much time myself to explore due to school! I can tell you guys that if you like Indian food, then Tikkaway is a MUST (it's like Chipotle, but Indian), or if you want a sit-down place, Thali (for meat eaters), or Thali Too (for veggies, or meat eaters who like vegetarian Indian food) are both excellent. I'm FINALLY going to take a Main Campus guided tour over break, so I can't speak to that, but I can say that I am looking forward to it because from what I have seen from the libraries etc down there, it's amazing. I am also looking forward to checking out some of the museums. If you want to get outside a little bit, and you have a car, I recommend driving up to East Rock Park (the view of the city is spectacular) --- the last mile or so of the road up there is closed for the winter, but I walked up it this weekend, and it was manageable (and chilly, but totally worth it). Wooster Square is really pretty, and it would be nice to walk around the square after you get pizza (that is definitely a thing here)
If your interview is on a Saturday, but you happen be here all day the Friday prior, I recommend going down to Cedar St (where the med school is), getting Thai food (or any other kind of food) from the awesome food carts that line the street at lunch, going to the Harvey Cushing Center in the basement of the Med School Library at 333 Cedar (which, if you are interested in psych, brains, history, etc, is the coolest place ever --- I recommend taking the guided tour, Fridays at 11am or 2pm: Welcome to the Cushing Center | Medical Library), and then getting coffee at Blue State on Congress. Which brings me to...
So far, here is the good COFFEE I have found in New Haven, ranked. (I'm a former career barista...I'm very picky about quality):
- Coffee Pedaler (at intersection of State St / East St)
- Fuel (208 Wooster St)
- Blue State Coffee (3 locations: York St, Wall St, Congress St)
- Willoughby's (2 locations: Church St, York St)
In regard to another poster's question, I live in East Rock, and I like that it is near many of my classmates and close to downtown. I live right near one of the 91 on-ramps, so my commute to West Haven is SUPER easy. Close to 10 minutes (with no or minimal traffic), around 15-20 with traffic. I like to drive, so I usually drive some of my classmates, but there is also the shuttle that many people take.
Thank you so much to everyone who has been so helpful!
I have one more questions - does anyone know when the program starts? I know that in the past it has started at the end of August, but when I spoke with Dean Pucci back in June, she said that, along with the curriculum revamp, they might switch the start date to May. Does anyone know when the official start date will be for this year? I really need to know in order to plan for the next 6 months, whether I get in or not. I emailed Ms. Esposito at the admissions office and she said that they would make an announcement at the orientation/interview days. I cannot wait until Feb. 5th to find out, I have a job up in the air right now. Can anyone help me with this?
I don't know. I bet they could do it for GEPN year, but I don't know how they would handle the overlap with specialty years. All of us are out of Med/Surg clinicals and they have all those preceptors. It will be interesting to see what they come up with in the redesign, for sure. I am not anyone who knows anything about how it all runs though. I just show up.
