I had some guy admitted to LTC with a "kit" to inject some "stiffer upper" DIRECTLY into the member. The poor nurse down there called me to come look at the meds re: what to ask the doc for w/orders (just the stuff to get through a few days- he wasn't moving in for good- THAT would have been fun trying to find someone to do that little chore). She hands me this thing that looks like a sunglasses case, and asked what she was supposed to do with that. I hadn't seen one of those before (LTC is not exactly a hot bed of erectile dysfunction medication). I read up to the part about injecting into the member and thought we may be able to forego that for a few days. I don't remember what the guy was in for, but do remember that when I saw him wheeled in, doing the horizontal mamba didn't look like something he could get after even with someone moving each limb for him...and whatever :eek:

I know that Viagra cant be given with Nitro, but what is the interaction with fibrinolytics, and does it apply to blood thinners as well?

Never heard of it being exlusion criteria for thrombolytics but definitely no Nitro if any Viagra within last 3 days or something like that (different time for different ED meds). I have seen someone given Nitro and it was nearly impossible to get his BP up (had used Viagra night before).

Hope you guys added it to his med list :-0

In the "most embarrassing moments at the church picnic" category:

I had a parishioner who I'm good friends with come up after church and say, "hey, i need to ask you something in private." Okay, I get this fairly often, and it usually ends up with me saying, "call your PCP in the morning." But......

The lady in question is in her late 80's, and her husband's 90. Sweet people. So I was sure I was misunderstanding her when she said, "Just how long can Joe keep wanting to do his business?"

Now, "doing his business" is what we call it when the dog needs to poop, and I couldn't believe she was asking me about the other option, so I said something intelligent, like, "Huh?"

"He wants to get that pill, that Viagra thing."

Worse and worse. I now have a mental image I really don't want, and the first thing I think is, somebody's gonna break a hip. I stammered a bit, and said, "Uh, gee, I don't think the urge ever goes away, just the capacity to act on it due to other health issues. Men have fathered children into their 90's."

She screeched, "90's! I'm ready to be done with this!" All I can think is, the priest is going to wander over and ask us what we're talking about. Oh, God.

"Can't I give him something that will make him want to sleep on his side?"

Visions of her poisoning her husband with a constellation of internet based suggestions comes to mind, along with them showing up in the ER saying "Nerd told me to...." and him poisoned with some half way attempt to make salt peter and sending his potassium thru the roof. Or worse, she starts spiking his evening milk with Ambien and he falls and breaks his neck.

"Just tell him that your hips hurt, and you can't do it as often. He may be wanting the little blue pill because he thinks you WANT him to use it, you know?" I'm soooo trying to keep this professional with out clapping my hands over my hears and going, "TMI!"

She wasn't too happy that I didn't tell her to feed him oleander or some such, but the next time she cornered me (and I'd been avoiding her, honestly), she said that it was a case where he didn't want her to be "lonely" and wasn't it sweet?

Yes, it was. But the next time, we don't need to talk about it in the fellowship hall!

I'm guessing the thinner the blood, the more goes to the "target area" and ups the risk for the dreaded priapism. :eek: Too much juice in the banana

XTRN...interesting. In peds we give Sildenafil (Viagra) to pulmonary hypertension kids. Not with Nitro, but sometimes with other cardiac drugs. And often with Aspirin. Maybe it's not an issue with our little ones because it's not working in that way anyway? I'm talking little kids...babies. Haven't seen teens taking it.

We give ambien and viagra to all of our old guys... ambien puts them to sleep and the viagra keeps em from rolling out of bed....
