.... yesterday i had a disagreement with my teacher about how she treats certain students like their the devils child and how she lets others get away with murder: come late, eating basically a full course DURING class, have their own personal conversations during class, etc...we weren't yelling at each other though nor being disrespectful towards each other. but we're in front of the whole class. i wasnt going to say any names but she kept egging me on to say who. so i named the girls she seems to be so mesmerized by and she just stayed shut cuz she knew exactly what i was talking about. she just didnt think that i would call her out in front of everybody. i dont know why because everybody sees it.. but now today as soon as i get to school and they tell me that i have to leave - no discussion, no being able to state my case on the matter. they just call me in tell me i have 10min to get off the property and the only time, if any, i have to state my case is on tuesday and i better "choose my words wisely" - put simply they're kicking me out of school! what kinda bs is that.. :angryfire if i get kicked out cause of this.....

If you can't concentrate if people are eating, then how can you expect to function in an emergency situation in a hospital with tons of people shouting orders, getting this, getting that...how can you expect to concentrate on what you are supposed to do next if you are so easily distracted?????

Apples and oranges.

People learn differently. Some people are not distracted by noises, smells, or visual stimuli, while others are. It drives me absolutely up the wall when someone next to me is crinkling food wrappers and making chewing noises in the classroom during lecture. Personally, I feel that unless one has a legitimate medical need to eat whenever and wherever, one should make the time/effort to meet one's nutritional needs outside of class.

A code is a completely different situation altogether, and you simply cannot compare someone eating during lecture with being a member of the code team. Besides, in a well run code, you do not have "tons of people shouting orders". If that's how codes are run at your facility, then you guys need more mock codes and ACLS training.

People eating when I'm trying to concentrate makes me feel homicidal. Time and place, people.

I'm currently in my last class of LPN School and every thur. we have class from 4:30pm - 9:30 pm thats a five hour lecture. So yes we eat snacks/dinner during class.

I don't see anything in this post about unfair treatment. What I see is the OP objecting to other people's behavior and becoming angry because the teacher doesn't share her point of view. There's no indication that the OP is penalized or treated differently by the instructor. If she objects to people talking during class because she cannot hear, why not raise her hand and politely ask for the conversation to stop? It's going to be tough to get along in any setting if she considers every behavior she finds objectionable to be a personal affront.

One of the requirements to get into my nursing program was 'respect authority". They even asked our references if they thought we were respectful of authority. There was no real need for you to do what you did, I totally hear you about unfairness, it happens everywhere. So I assume you are young and hopefully will learn a valuable lesson. Try again at another school maybe?

i would like to say to everyone that fortunately no i didnt get kicked out of school. no i wasnt being a brat and just trying to start a sceen in front of the class. no this isnt just about students eating in the classroom. YES i was only speaking for myself and yes i do realize that if others arent standing up for themselves then there is no reason for me to stand for them.. for those who say i was being unprofessional by "calling out" my teacher(Ms. E) i say pls go get hit by a truck. i wasnt trying to make a big production in front of the class.

it started out when half the class came back late from break bcuz they were getting their grades from another teacher. Ms E. said somebody better get them before i give everyone a zero for the day.. so i volunteered myself to go find everyone for her. when i got back she was handing back past homeworks and tests so we could study for a upcoming final. however i was the only one who didnt get anything back.. when i asked her for my things she told me that i couldnt get them bcuz i was late from break and she already gave me a zero. however i noticed that all the other students who actually were late had all their papers and was still being handed papers. i asked if they had also recvd zero's for the day and Ms E told me no they didnt - even though i wasnt the one late from break and i had told her that I would VOLUNTEER myself to go FIND the OTHER students... but i didnt argue with her and just let it go because she wasnt budging.. as lecture continues i had went to the cafe to get something to drink, on my way back to class another student had given me a piece of bagel. i was just finishing it as i was walking back into the class and Ms E says to me if u take another bite im going to fail you. she says "now you know that i failed students for eating in class last quarter.." and thats when i told her that cant be a true statement bcuz there was certain students from last quarter who on regular basis came back 30 min late to class (her class started after lunch) from chili's with steaks, potatoes, bufallo wings, fish, sodas, rice, pizza pies, etc and she would just let them rock, and how she giggled and joked with them about it.. now before this day i didnt care what those students did or what they got away with bcuz they werent affecting me at all but this day was different bcuz Ms E was talking about she was going to fail me.. by now the whole class was paying attention to our coversation and Ms E knew it so she kept telling me to tell her who i was talking about.. i told her i didnt want to say who bcuz it didnt matter who specifically did what.. she told me just say it if i think im so smart. she said i was just making things up and thats why i wouldnt say who i was talking about.. so finally i gave the names of the girls i was referring to and she zipped up real fast...

extra long story short... when i finally got a chance to have my meeting, it wasnt even a reall meeting with the same administrators that had just kicked me out the week before. only one admin was there, not in his office but in the small room that they use to take the picture ids, plus he was rushing me... and then when i finally began explaining my side of the story he didnt even know what i was talking about bcuz the teacher had lied in her write up about what had happened.. she completely left out the part of her failing me for " eating in class", completely left out the part of her favoring others. she had said that i was screaming, yelling and basically throwing a temper tamtrum for not getting my papers back.... now the reason i didnt get kicked out of school was because right after i had been suspened, a big argument had erupted in class and class meeting was called between all the students and teachers. and that when it came to light that a few of the teachers including Ms E play the favortism game with these same girls... and how other students' grades were being affected bcuz of the favortism..

now this forum is not the only place where ppl tell me i should have just shut up and just let her play games wit me.. but unfortunately that is not how i was raised.. my mother raised me to know when to pick your battles but at the same realize when a bad habit/pattern is forming. if you let ppl get away with pushing you around all the time then you will always be the loser. Unfortunately with my school, the student is always the loser and that wasnt the last run in i had with this teacher - as the quarter ran out she did everything in her power to get me riled up so she can say that i was being disruptive and disrespectful. she even stooped so low as to push me so i could react to her. some have suggested to me to press charges but no one would believe me bcuz she's an elder and i dont have any concrete witnesses.. the only thing good on my side is the fact that the DON understands that she is just picking on me.. but all this doesnt matter anymore to me because i am so close to the end - 19 weeks to be exact!.. all i want is my license. i will get my license. i will be a nurse. and noone will stop me!

for your information i am not "young" as you put it. and i could have sworn that nursing school is an adult learning environment, therefore respect is due for all parties involved. just because i am called "student" and the teacher is called "professor" does not mean i -along with the rest of my class- am not due respect as well...

To me in life there are no accidents but a person or action present at the wrong place and time. Due to the fact she or he was already unpleased at the fact that students were returning late, have them eat in class and then having to abruptly change scheduled assignments could have been stressful enough, they might have simply forgot that you were back on time and you volunteered to go find everyone and to be called out or disputed with was like adding fuel to the flame. Not really directed towards you as a person individually but being a teacher is very hard ... not to mention a teacher to adults. I'm not saying that the teacher was right or anything but just look at it from a different perspective and giving the benefit of the doubt.

As far as the other students are concerned, it doesn't matter who favors who in class ... its what you study and what grade you get on your NCLEX-PN or NCLEX RN or if your name appears on the Pearson Vue or not that matters the most.

If the problem keeps persisting you should most likely report the behavior continuously or find out if you're not the only one having this being done to you.

Keep up the good work, stay strong and keep that flame going!

I just realized this thread is ancient ... LOL SORRY ..!! Hope classes are treating you better!

what a terrible experience!!!! i cant believe it! it sounds like the teacher was incredibly immature and might have just had it out for you from the beginning. i am glad that you were not kicked out over that. maybe you should start documenting what goes on from now on - just in case- even though you only have a few weeks left. and if she ever says anything in front of someone - document it and ask them to briefly write something about what they saw and date it. that way you will be protected if the smit hits the fan again. and i would definitely be sure that your other class mates keep an eye out for you. sometimes, when students notice that others are being picked on and really believe it is not right - they will be willing to stand up for you, if you were to get into unwarranted trouble. even though a majority of the posters stated mind your own business.... i like to hope that if a situation of integrity were to arise that was a clear violation of right from wrong we would stand up.

and if not - we shouldn't be in nursing. how can we ever be patient advocates if we dont stand up for what is right....

however, this must be done through the chain of command and not in an inappropriate manner- but i am sure that is a lesson learned and water under the bridge.
