Wrap it up?

So suppose a kid come in to you holding an ace wrap and asks you to wrap up some sore affected body part. Then gives you a long drawn out sob story about why they need it wrapped - usually some ancient injury that they have reported to a parent but haven't had looked at by a doctor. Do you wrap it up for them?

If it's already wrapped and needs to be redone or secured, I will do it. An "injury" that occurs at school doesn't get wrapped by me. I usually give them ice and tell them to come back if the area gets swollen, bruised, or difficult to move. I also call the parent.

I had one 4th grader come in to see me once because his teacher noticed that his left hand was swollen. He had come into school with an ace wrap so tightly around his arm it was causing edema in his hand. When I took the wrap off, it was covering a bandaid. The student said his dad (a nurse!) "didn't want me picking at the bandaid" so he wrapped it up. It was nuts. I called dad, informed him that his son was more than capable of controlling the urge to pick at a small bandaid and advised him to use ace wraps conservatively. Dad then asked me if I would be a reference for his school nurse job application. It was a weird conversation.
