WoW..got turned down by Banner

Published

This is a first for me! In all my years in nursing I've never heard of such a thing. Is this the way nursing is progressed? Is it really becoming this competitive? Or is it that my pay scale would be to high?

I've been playing phone tag with 3 of their recruiters who couldn't give me any information about the position I applied for and one said he didn't even see it listed anymore :icon_roll Not sure I would have been happy there anyway, but they sent me an email telling me I was turned down! I thought that was a bit unprofessional. :angryfire

I'm going to ask them why, but I have a feeling it may have something to do with my relocating in May.

I also got turned down by Mayo clinic after a phone interview. I thought it went well, but guess not!

Luckily I did accept a position in the ICU at St. Joe's ;)

EDIT/UPDATE:

Talked to the recruiter at Banner, and they are hiring "internally" and new grads! So there we go...

I will see you there! The Banner recruiters took more than a month to call me back. I think the current "recession" has definitely hurt the nursing job market.

Hmm care to explain how the recession is affecting non-profit hospitals? LOL - that is such a cliche thing to say, someone doesnt return a phone call and its because of "the recession". I am curious as to how a recession is affecting a hospital that gets its some of its cash from the state which is pre-allocated - I dont see insurers cutting back on reimbursement, citing the "recession" either, additionally I don't observe less patients going to hospitals "Gee John, I broke my leg today but I am just not going to go to the ER because the economy is in a recession." lol

Specializes in NICU.
Good luck at Saint Joes, though they like to low ball people on salary imo.

Yeah they're on the lower end, but not a whole lot lower than Banner. But then they're also one of the only companies in the valley that offer a pension. Kinda evens out in the end. Pay isn't the only thing to look at .... at least not for everyone.

Specializes in LTC, Med/Surg, Peds, ICU, Tele.

A recession affects nursing by forcing many nurses back into nursing in order to pick up the slack for their spouses making less money. Also, people who have quit nursing to do something else might return to it if the economy slows and they lose their non-nursing job.

Interesting theory however I wondered since we are in such a massive rescession why the droves of nurses returning to work at all the hospitals hasn't decreased the pay hospitals are offering nurses. If we have such a massive surplus of nurses now that there is a recession one would think that hospitals would reduce pay, rather then increasing it as all of them have this year. And according to your theory I guess the nursing shortage is over now right?

Are we in a recession right now? If we are, it has just begun.

Yes, there are many nurse who have nursing as a back up career, or else to supplement the family income. I work with several nurses whose husbands are under employed and they plan to cut back on their hours as soon as they can.

So wait, you applied for a position, you werent accepted for the job you applied for and this automatically means that nursing is in shambles? I don't understand the logic honestly - many people apply for jobs everyday and get turned down. With regard to them sending you an email turning you down, would you prefer a phone call? whatever the medium, not everyone that applies for a position is not going to get that position, the world does not work that way. Banner has a superior and efficent way to aplply for jobs in my opinion - its the best system I have seen... I wouldn't take things so personally and jump to conclusions - just my opinion - Good luck at Saint Joes, though they like to low ball people on salary imo.

Whoever said that nursing was in a "shambles"? Putting words in my typing???:nono:

Banner did not handle the situation professionally IMHO. After speaking with 3 different recruiters who could not give me a straight answer is not my idea of a superior system. But you're entitled to your opinion and your advice on my "conclusion jumping" is taken with a grain of salt  as well as your stellar words of wisdom on the way the world works.

As far as "low balling" on salaries...check out Florida's Salary hall of shame sometime. New grads are making less than a dollar an hour than me after nearly 15 years of nursing.:angryfire

I thank you once again for your good wishes.

Well its like this non-profit dose not mean no profit- every orginisation needs to make profit so it can pay its staff - put money in rejuvenation- money into research and science- can a recession effect nursing of course it can as already explained forces more nurses on to the work force - nurses are more willing to pick up overtime if husbands\partners not working- also there can be a reduction in non emergency and elective procedures as people cannot afford co-pays time off work extra- also government suport that is given well that money comes from taxes less people working less money in the tax pot less moneyfor support -I could go on - it is just a matter of looking at the big picture.

Congrats on the job at St. Joes. I did my clinicals there and loved it. The people that work there have been there a long time (a testament to how they like it there). The Neuro ICU at St. Joes is all new so it ought to be a good place to work. We had a short rotation there and lots of my fellow students went there after graduation because so many of them liked it.

I got the same response from Banner. It looked like they didn't want to hire any new grads and now it looks as if that's all they are interested in. Go figure. I had a hard time getting any response from anyone there. Oh well.

I just wanted to mention that I have several co-workers that are picking up per-diem and agency shifts due to changes in the economy that are affecting their husband's paycheck. I was suprised to see how many people I've met that now need the extra hours. I don't know how that affects the nursing shortage. Maybe it's just a small blip.
