Would You Prefer a Male Nurse?

Published

hey guys. since most of us here are nursing students, i was just curious...would you guys prefer a male nurse over a female nurse in general? i know it doesn't matter as long as they did their job compentently...but if given the choice, what would you choose? i personally don't mind for most things, but i sure was glad to have a male nurse when i had to have a mole on my scrotum checked  so for me it just depends on the situation i suppose. thoughts?

Female nurses have a more motherly feel to me which I enjoy when I am sick, so as long as i don't have to whip out my "junk" in the course of my treatment the female nurses have my vote. No guy wants mom to see them naked so I'd be more inclined to have a male nurse if my treatment warranted nudity.

I think it would depend on the reason I was in there. Either would be fine, but I think if it was something dealing with the peri-area I would prefer a male, just because I think it would be more uncomfortable for him then the female nurse.

I would prefer a female nurse until I showed some private part then would want a male.

I would definetly prefer a female nurse or doctor for all forms of care. This is just a personal preference as having a male nurse would probably make me very uncomfortable. I dont think I would have enough nerve to ask for one though if I was given a male, I think i would just suck it up and be humiliated.

I am a bit confused by your post itsbuzzy. Why would you make a choice on the gender of a nurse/provider based on it would make that nurse/provider uncomfortable? I though the idea was to make a choice on your comfort, but not the providers discomfort. Was this a mistype?

It would kind be both. Just from my experience alot of our younger nursing female students are very embarrased performing certain care on males. They do it, but they are noticably uncomfortable. I actually had one female tell me the other day that she hadn't seen an uncircumsized member before and was worried about having to do certain care if given a patient with one. As for me being uncomfortable, I think that knowing that the nurse is uncomforable would make me more uncomfortable.

I hope you can make sense out of that. LOL.

Back in February I was cleaning a male patient. He was uncircumsized and since I'm not I really had no idea how to "handle" the member. What ended up happening is the foreskin kept slipping under my fingers and... hate to say it... it was almost as though I was... well, you know... uh.... I was trying to pull back the foreskin to clean under it.

That's the only time I, as the student provider, have been uncomfortable, and those are the situations I could understand males feeling a little uncomfortable.. I had to laugh about it to him, and apologize. He was in his late 90s so he didn't seem to care (or notice? who knows...).

Just thought I'd throw that out there... let people know this may be one of those situations a few "give me a female nurse only, please" posters meant when they expressed preference for opposite sex.. lol.

LOL. That is hilarious. It would of been very embarrassing at the time, but afterward I bet that was a good one for your fellow students/nurses to make fun of you about.

I want a nurse taking care of me to be competent and professional. Caring would be good too, but of secondary importance.

I do not care one whit about their chromosomal makeup.

I haven't received care from a male before, but I've never felt uncomfortable with a female before. I don't think it would really matter for me, but something tells me I would prefer a female nurse.
