So I work pool at a hospital. I worked 8 hrs in the SICU and was floated to a stepdown unit and as I entered the floor the charge nurse told me that she assigned me as a tech. I told her that would not be acceptable. I was hired as a nurse and that is the role I would work.
She looked at me as if I had three heads. I again told her if she wanted to use me as a nurse I would be more than happy to help her out but I would never work as a nurse tech.
Eventually they found a staff nurse to fille the role and I took her assignment.
Has anyone ever refused to work as a tech? Any thoughts?
so I chesked with my manager and director. Turns out there is a policy on floating and I was spot on. If a nurse wants to work as a tech all is good, but if they do not they do not have to. The step down was way wrong in trying to assign me as a tech....I was floated as as nurse period,For all those evil female nurses who had nasty things to say about my stance - you were wrong! so suck it! lalalalalalalal
How do you know they were all female? You assume too much. And, wow, suck it? how professional. Do you speak to people like that to their face? I doubt it. The only thing spot-on is your nasty attitude. Nobody said anything nasty other than we had experienced RNs being given an assignment like the one you were.
Just because there is a policy saying you don't have to work as a tech doesn't mean you don't come off as condescending because you refuse to do so. So, great for you, your work doesn't make you work as a tech. Congratulations. Its not going to make you look any better to your coworkers, unless you count the ones that also feel they shouldn't have to do CNA work.
Now maybe that was a nasty comment. ;D

How mature. You were the one that asked for our opinions, and we gave it to you. Sorry you didn't like what we had to say. Next time you just want somebody to take your side instead of give you an honest opinion, just say so.
Oh, and do me a favor - don't apply for any jobs at my hospital. I wouldn't want you as my coworker. You come across as self-centered, self-righteous, and selfish.
:paw:

Wow! That was a very mature and professional statement. I still believe in teamwork.

Well I guess you told us, huh? hahahaha, touche! Point taken!! Guess we missed the part after "any toughts?" that said "that agree with mine?" Probably hormones, you know how it is. . . >

I agree completely. The original poster came on here and wanted us to agree with her, nothing more. Good luck on that farming for the answer you want. I'd be darn careful cuz it could get you in a heap of trouble.
Your attitude is what "sucks it" and it will not serve you well.
As for the original question,
I would, as a general rule, avoid working as a C.N.A. Like so many have mentioned, you are still responsible as a nurse caring for the patient, even if you are not the nurse who is doing the actual "R.N." duties. I have done it in a serious pinch however. MUCH MORE IMPORTANTLY however, is that you should be helping your nurses aide whenever you possibly can. As a nurse and a professional (the professional part, you SERIOUSLY need to work on), you are the example. I get the impression that your ONE OF THOSE nurses who feels she need not be bothered with doing "aide work". If that is indeed the case, I hope I never have to work with you. Nursing is hard enough without dealing with a nurse who is a prima donna!
I don't think it is a point about being "too good" to perform any of the tech duties. In my facility we would shift to primary nursing and give 3-4 patients to the nurses and they are responsible for vitals etc. Why not use the RN as an RN? To me it makes no sense to use a nurse as a tech and is a poor use of resources.Thankfully, I work with far more forward thinking people and we do not fire someone for not taking a role they were not hired for.
I was going to point out too, the math here doesn't always work that well.
When we have an aid, the RNs on my unit on nights can go up to 10 pts, but we hover around 8 most of the time. So, 32 pts with one aid is an average night. 4 RNs/ 1 aid.
Now, the aid calls off. We get a float RN. One of us becomes the aid. The assignments are basically the same..........8pts per RN and an aid.
Going your route..............now with 5 RNs...........that'd be two RN's with seven patients and three with six. For primary care............that just don't work. Not at all. "DANGER WILL ROBINSON" In order to make it work, one person being an aid goes much farther.
.Your attitude is what "sucks it" and it will not serve you well.
That cracked me up!
OP, you will find life easier if you work as a team, instead of forcing other people to give up their assignments because you feel you are "above" aide duties. What a crappy mentality. God forbid people ask you for help on tasks you think you are too good to do.
Good luck getting help from those nurses when you need it!
Just because you're an RN doesn't mean your poop doesn't stink.
i just noticed that the statement said
"for all those evil female nurses who had nasty things to say about my stance - you were wrong! so suck it! lalalalalalalal"
notice the words evil female nurses
wow, i think i just met my first male prima donna nurse. i'm not sure if that's worse than a female prima donna nurse or not.

huh? i thought op was a female. the "suck it" comment didn't change my mind either.
i've seen lots of younger girls these days use that term. it always strikes me as odd. are they trying to tell people something? i don't know. don't wanna know.

I assumed the OP was a guy because (and I could be totally off here)... the "lalalalalala" phrase made me think of Borat, and if the OP is quoting Borat then it must be a guy!

Oh HELL NOOOOO.
Don't bunch that awful movie in with being a male.
I can't think of one now, but I'm going to come back in a few minutes with an argument that quoting that movie means OP is female.
:crying2:I'm going to need lots of time to figure out how, but when I do.......................................
Eh. Forget it. Not worth the hassle.
I hate that movie.
