Would you join the Army Nurse Corps? Why or Why not?

Published

Hey all,

Yes If you look at my profile I am a Nurse Recruiter for the Army. I am also an Army Nurse. I joined back in 1987 to get out of my home state and to see the world. I have done that, but I meander. Anyways I am now recruiting nurses and it is hard!!!!! I need a pulse of the feelings of the non-military nurses out there SO

The question is this:

If I offered would you join the Army Nurse Corps? Why or Why Not?

I was in (although it was Navy) and it was an incredible experience. Very hard to adjust to a civilian hospital afterwards though since you're so used to having the best equipment, the newest protocols, and a trauma team. This was years ago and civilian hospitals just didn't have those things. I suspect it's still the same- military hospitals are on the cutting edge. I do know Balad is just awesome. (have Air Force friends who were stationed there).

Tazzi - you described the feeling better than I ever could! How'd you do that?

I'm an army brat to the core. I have never been in the service myself but that's where my loyalties lie.

Specializes in A myriad of specialties.

Isn't there discrimination against age with any of the armed forces?? It seems there was many years ago if I recall correctly. I thought there was an age limit so even if I wanted to, I couldn't since I'm nearing 49 and I think the age limit is 34, isn't it?

No, I think it is older than 34 . . . . I certainly got things in the mail up until recently and I'm 49 also.

But we need the help of an expert here . . . ;)

The age has definitely changed, but I can't remember now what it is. it is much older though now. I think it is on the army corps of nursing website, I know I saw it recently when I was looking on there.

I remember when I graduated at 40 someone attempted to recruit me . . . .

Oh.......

Specializes in OB, critical care, hospice, farm/industr.

I would if I were younger. I feel service is a very important part of life and building character.

When I became a nurse, I was engaged, had bought a house and was busy trying to arrange my life. If I had been younger and without ties, I'm sure I would have.

One of my brothers is in the Navy, one's in the Army. Both have served in combat. We are an Army family. My father was the sole support of his mother during the Viet Nam Conflict and was exempt, but my grandfather was in WWI and II, my great-grandfather was a chaplain, cousins and uncles have served. My two uncles arranged to be on the same ship during WWII, but after the Sullivan disaster, they were split up and were ticked off about it!

So anyway, the answer is yes. One bro just back from Iraq and I wish I could go there or Afghanistan. I've been thinking about a way to serve, but I think I'm too old and too fat/unfit for active service.

I am way too big of a wimp. I would be crying the first day and forget war. Sorry but I'm a chicken. God bless all the brave folks.

Cool...so my husband retires from the Coast Guard when we're 41...and I still have time to join myself!!?? That's awesome!!!:w00t:

I'd join tomorrow if I weren't fluffy and oh so out of shape. I'm prior service, not as a nurse, but was an MP, and played the weight game for years. My husband and daughter are both in the Reserves, and I swear, if they get deployed I will find a way over. Do they have civilian nurses in Iraq or Kuwait?
