Any Leads on Travel Companies Hiring for South Florida?
I'm just wondering if anyone knows of companies possibly hiring for hospitals in South Florida. I have done travel assignments in the past, but my last was about 6-7 years ago. I feel like a total newbie and would just like a few leads. Thanks

No jobs in florida for new grads
Baptist Hospital is still hiring new grads. We recently hired 6 on my unit. Their nurse residency program has already started, but maybe you can get your foot in for the next round. They are also opening a brand new hospital in 2011.

If healthcare reform resulted in salary caps of $40k for nurses would you stay?
I can barely afford to live in South Florida on the wages I earn now. Realistically even if I wanted to stay in the nursing field, there is no way I could for that pay. Honestly, I love my job but would refuse to work for that. It is an insult. A manager at Publix or McDonalds makes more than $40,000 a year.

Mandatory White Uniforms for RN's- your experience
Sorry, but I refuse to work at a place where I am micro-managed. I have never went into an attorney's office and not been able to pick out who was the attorney and who was the secretary. I think MOST patients are able to know who the nurse is when they wear a huge RN badge and INTRODUCE themselves. I worked on a floor that attmpted to implement a solid color uniform. The majority of the nurses refused to comply. Management was upset for a few weeks, but gave up quickly when we united. Another floor implemented solid blue uniforms and would write nurses up for not complying. (Except the floor favorites which were somehow allowed to wear whatever they wanted, sloppy looking or not.) I had already put in for a transfer so I complied until I was hired elsewhere. I once again work where the management realizes there is far more important things than what color the nurse is wearing. All that being said... Can nurses PLEASE stop wearing those cut off style scrub tops and low rise pants??? Honestly, that is the reason our profession isn't taken seriously. Oh, and throw out your gum too. We aren't cows.:banghead: And how about an iron??? Just a thought...

Looking for Patient Acuity Worksheet
Really?? No one uses patient acuity worksheets where they work... I've done a search on the board but have only found one. I'm really hoping someone can help.

Looking for Patient Acuity Worksheet
When I worked out in California we had a patient acuity worksheet that was great. It was very simple and rated patients on a scale of 1-5. Of course that was many years ago and I no longer have access to the worksheet. The hospital unit I am working for now is thinking of implementing staffing by acuity but the only worksheet they have is more geared to an ICU not a floor unit. I was wondering if anyone had an acuity worksheet they would be willing to share with me. I am desperate and can't phathom how a two page patient acuity worksheet that focuses on ventilators, a-lines, and multiple drips is going to make my job any easier.

What to do now?? (long)
I would probably take this situation to risk management. Let them know that you feel that you are concerned with the safety of the patients. Having 2 critical care patients and 4 more regular patients is NOT safe. You are unable to provide safe care and what would happen if one of those patients had coded. I have spoken to risk management a number of times over the year and I have to say they are very helpful. Make sure you say something before there are any further problems with your manager. Good Luck

Do you count resps every time you do vitals?
I have pts on vents that are on set rates not breathing on their own and we get all kinds of RR recorded on them. I like checking things for myself.

Ready for the ICU???
I wanted to know if when you first started ICU if you felt ready for it or if you were terrified. I have worked in a Step-down unit for sometime now and started here with the intent to move to ICU but have not done so. Although we seem to trade pts back and forth with our ICU I am absolutely terrified to make the move. I have had two of my old managers ask why I didnt move to the ICU yet and when I told them I didnt feel that I was ready they said that if I could handle the pts where I worked I would do fine. I feel very confident where I work now and am wondering if I am just too comfortable there to challenge myself or if I really am not ready. I honestly do have the desire to move to the ICU but dont want to fail or worse do something to jepordize my pts. I see brand new nurses go fresh out of school into the ICU and do fine but am still worried. Any insight or advice would be appreciated. Thanks

Pt beds in the hallway
The hospital I work in has hallway pts and playroom pts. These are their permanent rooms not a waiting place until rooms are cleaned. Same hospital has place two pts on stretchers in a single private room with a blanket inbetween.

how would you feel as a pt?
We have a whole page of scripted comments we have to make at specific times. We have specific comments for pretty much anything you can think of. We all know we sound absolutely ridiculous and cold but management insists. Funny thing is our pt satisfaction scores have increased at all. I would be more satisfied with a warm and authentically caring nurse but what do I know.

Midnight Dr. Call.
Many of you say do not apologize for calling however I usually apologize just to be nice. I know it is there job but I still say sorry. Just like when I leave work for another nurse to follow-up with. Maybe it is just my personality but I see nothing wrong with an I'm sorry for waking you Dr. X but pt y whatever it is. I feel they are a little more recpetive if you are polite. I also tend to make suggestions if there is something specific I am looking to get. A little off topic what is your facilities policy on sending labs on pt. For example my pt was transfused overnight and Dr did not write for follow-up H/H or K replaced etc. Do they have problem doing labs not ordered? What about sending stool for OB or C-diff. etc. Just curious because I have worked different places with different policies on this.
