Would they even want to hire a grad nurse for this job? Don't know what else to do - even nursing homes don't need new grads...

If you haven't passed your boards yet that might be an excellent way to work yourself in the door. If you are already licensed its most likely that your BON will not let you work below your scope of practice but you could check with them. Good luck!

I hired on as a tech in the ER starting in February when I had graduated in January and it has worked out perfectly well. It was in fact the best thing I have ever done. I really took my time to study for the NCLEX because I liked my job so much hehe and I found I was quite prepared for the test when I took it in May. I continued to work at my place of employment as an ER tech while I applied at other hospitals for a nursing position. When I didn't get the overwhelming responses I thought I would get I just went to my Nurse Manager and asked her if there was a position at the hospital. She said she would get back to me in a week and when she did she told me they were hiring in med/surg, a position that was not advertised. What luck!
So yeah go for it! The experience I gained in the ER was invaluable and my foot was in the door. The people I worked with really advocated for me by outlining my good work ethics to the next floor Nursing Manager so she was inclined to hire me before she even met me.

Its not crazy you just have to find somewhere that does that. I know that where I work once you get your GN status you can't work as a tech. I think its a good idea though especially if you aren't taking boards right off the bat.

While I know that many say that you work under the standards of the higher license, but realistically, you have to eat today! I would take the chance. I am also certified as a phlebotomist, and actually, sometimes, I think about getting a side job at a lab with no responsibility outside of drawing the blood. Now, because I am a nurse, I know the importance of the order of draw, etc, so, they'd have a darned good tech!
As mentioned before, it may open doors in the future, but it will ensure that you eat today. Ask the BON of your area and if it is a go, then, do what you have to do.
