Women's Right to Choose

Nurses General Nursing

Published

I haven't seen this conversation come up on AllNurses, even after Scrubs Mag addressed the erosion of women's right to choose. I apologize if this is too much of a hot-button issue to open up for discussion, but I'm curious as to where folks on here stand when it comes to the increase in states passing restrictive abortion laws, in some cases nearly eliminating it altogether. If the mods are afraid, like I am (especially after seeing how some of the Facebook discussions devolved after Scrubs Mag posted their article there), that this can't remain a civil discussion, please feel free to take it down now. I just feel that this is an important discussion that needs to take place. After Missouri Rep. Barry Hovis spoke of the vast majority of rape being date rape and "consensual rape", Virginia State Sen. Steve Martin (R) stated "A pregnant woman is just a “host” that should not have the right to end her pregnancy", and VP Pence's comments about being "proud to be part of pro-life administration", I'm feeling increasingly disturbed about this country's lack of regard toward women.

Because the NPR is totally non-biased. LOL!!!! No... I do not watch or read Fox News. I get my news from strictly independent sources.

If you read my whole post, you'd see that you can click the research directly from the NPR page. It seems you skipped over this. You mentioned independent sources, but failed to realize that Concerned Women for America is a socially conservative movement that opposed the Violence Against Women Act because it "creates new protections for homosexuals", that they're against hate crime legislation because it opposes the Bible's view on homosexuality, believes same sex marriage is akin to incest, etc. Your sources are radically biased as well. You can go back to the link I posted and click the research to better inform yourself.

Your “non-biased” source starts with a quote from the Bible which is a work of fiction....clearly you do not understand what not biased means.

I wasn’t going by their views on other topics... but I guess you needed to discredit them somehow right? I was referencing as a summary - but feel free to google Sanger and Hitler... there are plenty of pages on the subject. However, I can just go and pull her quotes directly from her writings if it will make you feel any better. I mean, come on, she said specifically that it was best to abort poor minorities and the disabled... SHE SAID THAT. You can try and slant that anyway you want but it’s still eugenics.

Yes or no. Is it okay to abort a girl because you want a boy?

If you view the Bible as a work of fiction then please do not proceed any further into nursing. Tolerance and respect for the spirituality and religion of patients is a requirement... one you clearly don’t meet.

I can respect people’s religious beliefs, what I cannot respect is people trying to use those beliefs as fact against me. Perhaps you should reconsider your career in nursing as you can’t get beyond your religious beliefs. As of now, in America we are not a theocracy, your religion has no place in our laws. I believe in being a good, caring, law-abiding individual.

Find the quote that says it was "best to abort poor minorities and the disabled".

My personal opinion on someone's decision to terminate a pregnancy has no bearing in this conversation, and I don't know what anyone else's motives are to terminate. It is not my business. I do not believe that there should be a 6 week ban on abortion. Period. That's my opinion.

You brought up religion... not me. You assumed I was basing my arguments on Christianity because you obviously have no tolerance for religion. I have been a nurse for 20 years sweetheart... I got this. I have taken care of everyone from murderers, rapists, prostitutes, priests, Jews, Hindu, Buddhists, atheists...you name it...one of my favorite families is Pagan. I don’t judge. My faith tells me it is wrong to judge. My faith also tells me to love the person and hate the sin and that all people are sinners.... including me. You are the self righteous one in this conversation,... I’d recommend some mindfulness training because I don’t see how you can provide good care when you disrespect a person’s fundamental spiritual beliefs.

Then I have no interest in discussing this further. I will not change your mind and nor will you change mine.

I see... automatically assume because I don’t agree with you that I am a bad person. Nice example of tolerance.

I don’t think you are a bad person... I disagree with your beliefs. How did we get to a point in this society that we cannot disagree without associating evil intent?

You have been all over this topic insulting people, insinuating that people who don’t see embryos as human are akin to nazis. Who is the intolerant one here? Like I said I have no problem with religion, my last boyfriend was Muslim, I have many family members who are Christian, my two younger cousins are or are in training to become pastors, they love and accept me, just as I love and accept them. I have a great number of friends who are Christian, including several who are Mormon, I have friends who are Jewish. I can put my disbelief in religion aside and help those in need free of judgment. I only brought up religion as you used an article that is clearly biased to try and counter argue someone using an article saying that it was biased.

I never said you were a bad person, and no one said anything about evil intent. You made a statement that your favorite family is a religious minority, and I attached a link to a story about how this defense is seen as problematic in today's society.

On the subject of tolerance, though; you have your opinion on abortion and that is fine- you can have your opinion and live every day of your life behind it. Your opinion doesn't mandate me to live by your beliefs, though. Everyone gets to have an opinion and they can be worlds apart from one another, but that's just it- it's an opinion, and it should have no place in the laws that preside over my or anyone else's body. Your opinions and your beliefs are yours, while mine are mine. Your beliefs and your opinions should have no weight in the writing of laws that dictate how anyone lives their lives. My body, my choice; just like your body, your choice.
