will universal healthcare ( in the usa) cut RN pay?

Published

I been hearing this debate off and on for a long time about how if Obama gets universal healthcare to go ( if he gets elected of course)though in the US that nursing pay will be cut dramatically. I would think this has to do with the fact that we would all be working for the government and that there will no longer be competition. There are many people in my nursing class that said they will leave nursing if thats the case. I also talked to several doctors that said the same thing about medicine in general. Im just curious if anyone has some good info about this. Thanks

I fail to see how broadening the base of the insured would put MRI companies out of business.

Private insurers, now those guys I worry about. It's a huge industry: millions of people work for health insurance companies. When there is no longer need for all of the administrators, collections agents, and billings clerks, that's a lot of people out of work.

That's not what I asked I specifically asked if companies that make CT scanners should be for profit?

You seem mighty fisty tonight. Healthcare should not be for-profit.. period. The other things you asked about are consumer goods.. even though the hospital charges 5 - 10 times more for the item than what they purchased it for. It is not the wholesalers that is the problem. Should the nurse make a profit? What does that mean? A profit for killing off the patient before midnight so the insurance company does not get charged for an extra day? Or do you think family should pay you on top of your wage to take care of their loved one so they can get some sleep? If you want to travel, you may get a few 'perks', but be prepared for the other nurses to 'dump' on you instead of thanking you for helping them out of having to carry their load of patients, as well as yours split between the staff. And then, when you have 2 patients crashing at the same time, turn their back on you and say 'That is what you get the big bucks for.. deal with it'? If dollars are your God, then go where the money is, and stop complaining.

Friendly reminder to keep things on topic and about the effects of UHC on RN pay.....thanks.

If health care should not be for profit then nurses should be giving back any money left over after expenses. Any company involved in healthcare should deliver those goods and services for no profit? If all these companies are t be not for profit because God forbid someone should make money in healthcare then who is going to invest in new technology if we drive profit away? Should there be profit in house construction? Certainly people need a roof over their head before they need health care?

There is profit and then there is price-gouging...

8 dollars for a 5 dollar bottle of aspirin is profit...

6 dollars for 2 aspirin is price gouging...

The same price gouging happens at not for profit hospitals as well.

Probably...

I find it asinine to expect someone else to pay myy medical bills. I suppose if that's how I grew up and I didn't know any better I would think it was an okay program but I didn't grow up depending on the government to support me and I won't teach my children to live that way either.

If you have insurance by definition other people are contributing to the cost of your medical care. Anyone who has insurance is being supported by others.

Single payer advocates are simply advocating for rational finance systems. We cannot continue to run a system with a 27% expense ratio. Other countries do it for 5% (round numbers.)

Our medical inflation rate is 16%. Other countries are in the single digits.

The difference is, the administrative staff is not as heavy. The monies are put back into the hospital instead of being a bonus to the administrative staff. You may be too young to remember, but once upon a time, nurses recieved bonuses for helping keep costs down and doing a good job. It was called 'pay by performance'. And moderator, I feel I have been and am staying on the proper subject, since this concerns nurses pay and universal healthcare.:heartbeat

If you have insurance then aeveryone is contributing under the liberal scheme the "something for nothing" crowd wants someone else to pay for their health care. Heck I'm all for UHC if someone else is paying for it.

If you believe not for profits do not get bonuses then you are in dreamland. I'm all for pay for performance but Unions are not. If you have a union there is no pay for performance which will be the same for government run health care.
