  1. joanna, the link is for an article from Metro. Is there an official statement from UNA?
  2. Does anyone have a link to the UNA statement?
  3. Is OP even still here, or is s/he trolling us?
  4. I think you need to specify what you are asking... Are you asking whether men *ought* to be in nursing at all?
  5. Keep in mind that "socialized" comes in different flavors, with different degree of government involvement. In Canada, the Feds shell out cash to the provinces, set national standards for universality/portability/comprehensiveness, and then back off. The provinces administer what's basically a huge pool of insurance. Doctors are independent practitioners who then bill the provincial plan. Wages for Canadian nurses is here (PDF, about 1 mb) EDIT: the document takes forever to download! The wages start at $25/h for a new grad in PEI up to $38/h for a senior nurse in Alberta.
  6. Unfortunately, most anti-vaccine people distrust the CDC and medical journals. The only sources they believe are their own, so they believe what they want to, no matter what the peer-reviewed research shows.
  7. The first thing my spouse said when I told him I was going to make more than him: "Woo hoo!" Men who are intimidated by a woman's salary usually have other issues that cause the relationship to fail.
  8. I agree with RedRobin: Won't miss cubicles, nor the mouse on a wheel feeling. Will miss working from home!
  9. I'm less than 2 miles away. Biking to work was a big consideration when my husband and I were shopping for houses! Luckily, my worksite provides uniforms, so I can just wear what's comfortable to work. Paddlelady, what did you do in snow? Did you change tires or otherwise winterize your ride? Also, what are your recommendations for cold/wet gear?
  10. Nope, no obvious answers for this one! You really do have to approach it with an open mind, and I'm so glad you're trying.
  11. Please remember that UHC isn't necessarily government-run care. In the US, it likely won't involve the government taking over hospitals. Americans won't stand for that. More likely single-payer insurance plans or even mandating that private insurers provide adequate coverage for necessary services, and do not discriminate on basis of pre-existing conditions. cwazycwissyRN, where have you heard that Canadian nurses are looking for US jobs? Are you thinking about the layoffs during the mid-90's? These days, the pay is pretty good, and it's nice to stay close to family. There are certain opportunities in the US that involve big sign-on bonuses, but I'd say that most of us are pretty wary of US recruiters. In any case, it's nearly impossible to get a TN visa. Any nurses in the UK/Europe/Australia want to fill in some salary numbers?
  12. It's OK to mess up university the first time. There are so many people with Honours in HS who just didn't have the study skills and discipline that post-secondary demands. Decide what's best for you, and go for it.
  13. I got tested after I accepted the job offer. Not sure of the legality of testing an applicant. Might want to talk to a lawyer on that one. Stupid job requirement, IMHO. Why should they care what you do on your time off? As long as it doesn't affect performance, why should they care?
  14. Violinist, have you considered taking some prerequisites/transfer credits through Athabasca? My GPA wasn't the greatest, either, but I boosted it with "A's" in A & P (from Athabasca/GMC) and med micro (GMC). Not only did I get the GPA I needed, but I was 9 credits ahead when I finally got into the RN program. EDIT: also, I started school when I was 33. OK, no kids, but there were plenty of people who got through it with kids-- even a few who had babies during the school year!
