Will I get into nursing school?

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

I am going to be a junior at a 4 year college this fall, but I am currently taking microbiology and organic chemistry right now for the summer at a community college. I am trying to apply for Nursing school this fall and hope to attend next fall. I just talk to my microbiology teacher and she said that the highest overall grade I can go to is a C. I'm doing okay in Organic Chemistry right now. Does C in Microbiology look really bad? My overall cumulative GPA right now is 2.89. I try hard for all my classes but I just can't get A's. I think I am a B student. What are my chances of getting into nursing school?

I know that all of the schools that I looked into (BSN, ADN, and Diploma) required a minimum of a 3.0, and that was just to turn in the application. Nursing programs are really competitive right now (or they may always be like this..not sure). Is there any way that you can repeat some classes to bring up your GPA? Honestly, I don't think that you would be able to get into a reputable nursing program with that gpa. You may be able to find a private program that has open admissions, but I would be leery of such a program and you would be paying the big $$$.

why are you taking organic chemistry? is that required? I would re-take some mandatory sciences to raise your GPA.

It really depends on your school's requirements. My local CC does not have a minimum GPA but "points" are awarded for number of pre-reqs completeled, and the grades earned in A&P I & II. So if I took micro and got a C, but got A's in A&P I&II, the C wouldn't make a lick of difference. In fact I could get all C's in every class except A&P and still get a "perfect" point score.

It really depends on where you want to apply for nursing school. Some places only accept students with a 3.0 GPA or higher just because nursing students are becoming much more competitive each year.

But if I were you, I would probably see if I can retake classes (provided that the nursing program you want to get into won't take points off for repeated courses) in order to raise my GPA to at least a 3.0 or higher

You are going to have a herd time getting into most schools. I think your problem may be in your approach. You say you work hard, but you were unaware that the best possiable outcome your class was a c. Stop accepting that you are a B student and take responsibility for your own education.

The most widely given out grade in undergrad, at over 40%, is the A. Your peers (or competition) is going to latch onto those A's and to give yourself a chance you need to as well. A 3.0 (with a great story) has the chance to get your foot in the door, anything less will land you a thanks for sending us 50 dollars, unfortunantly your application didn't meet the minimums so we didn't even take the time to look at your overall package.

I don't think they'd even consider you with a 2.9. I had a 3.4 and was put on the wait list for a year and reapplied and was accepted the next year. Most of my peers had a 3.6 or above...

does the 4yr college you attend now have a nursing school? if yes try applying as a transfer student because a lot of accelerated BSN programs require a 3.0 minimum to be accepted.

I am a University of Maryland and you will not be accepted with a C in micro, A&P1&2, chem. you need to have at least a 3.0 transferring in and at least a B in all science classes

I am also applying to nursing school in houston tx. I have about a 3.5-3.6 but i had to take A&P I and Chem over to get that GPA. Hopefully that won't count against me. Anyway, GOOD LUCK AND GIVE IT 150% AND YOU WILL BE FINE.!!

fyi - all school look to see how many times you took something, but it does count in your favor (generally) if you were wiling to retake a class and did much better in the second time.

Most of the school I looked at required a minimum of 2.7 GPA. I'm planning on applying to nursing after I finished my fall semester so I can use those grades to pull my GPA up back to 3.0. I am very involved in my school. I am in a sorority, clubs and organizations, leadership, and volunteering. I'm also taking a CNA class this September. Will that increase my chance?
