Will I get into nursing school?

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

I am going to be a junior at a 4 year college this fall, but I am currently taking microbiology and organic chemistry right now for the summer at a community college. I am trying to apply for Nursing school this fall and hope to attend next fall. I just talk to my microbiology teacher and she said that the highest overall grade I can go to is a C. I'm doing okay in Organic Chemistry right now. Does C in Microbiology look really bad? My overall cumulative GPA right now is 2.89. I try hard for all my classes but I just can't get A's. I think I am a B student. What are my chances of getting into nursing school?

most nursing schools are looking for well rounded people - but usually ones with above a 3.0

Like others have stated, it depends on where you are applying and how competitive it is. I applied for the ADN. You had to have a 2.7 to be able to turn in the nursing app. I had a 3.2, because like you, I am a B student. I normally get at least one A every semester and the rest is B's and I am OK with that! I study so much more and harder than a lot of people I know and they walk away with A's and I walk away with B's. As long as you know you are trying your hardest, that's what counts! Anyway, I had a 3.2 and was accepted on my first try. About 200 people applied and 80 was accepted.

My school is a 4 year university and all they required was that you have a 2.0 cumulative gpa and make at least a C in all pre reqs, i.e. a&p 1&2, chemistry, microbiology, but you also had to have some of the foundations classes complete. I made a C in micro, an A in chem, an A in a&p 2, a B in a&p 1, All of my foundations classes were A's. I think it was a total of 16 credit hours of pre-reqs that they looked at but they gave a big emphasis to those 4, the sciences.

My school also required the NLN PAX exam, and really to be competitive you need at least a 110 composite. You generally need a competitive cumulative gpa of 3.0 to successfully get in to nursing school. It is highly competitive but its relative to whom you are competing against.

I've gotten into both nursing schools that I applied to. I unfortunately had to move and couldn't attend the other one but did successfully get into the BSN program at UH Manoa. Out of the 60 something people in the fall class at UH most of them have a 3.2 cumulative gpa, and an avg gpa of 3.4 in the sciences. Most scored a 110-140 on the NLN, 100 is the mean. At tcc in Virginia (my previous school) over 200 applied and only 60 were taken each semester.

Even if you are worried about your grade, I would still apply. You never know how weak/strong the rest of the candidates are.
