I'm so frustrated! I feel like i'll never get accpeted to a nursing program. I'm so depserate and i feel like i get turned down everywhere i go because i dont have A's. My grades aren't amazing, more like average, but i just wish someone would accept me already. I've only talked to 2 schools (associate programs) and they require atleast a 3.6 and i dont have that. I'm so scared i'll never get accepted and i dont know what to do. Can anyone relate? I know no one really has anyway of knowing, but will a school ever accept me? It's worrying me, and it makes me angry because all i want is to become a nurse and move on with my life!
p.s. i'm in the ny area if anyone knows of schools that aren't so impossible to get into. I went to BMCC and they said their LOWEST gpa accepted was a 3.8 for this years program and last year!! I mean, come on.
Thanks everyone

The reality is that u may have 2 take some classes 2 get accepted. I had 2 take four 'c' classes over and I received three a's and one b and finally got accepted. So consider the facts. It's very competitive now. 7 years ago a 2.5 would have gotten u n.keep us posted on your plans.
Meant 2 say u may have 2 take some classes over.

I am going to apply to a school here in Florida in July. I am in the same boat at you are! I have ALL B'S in the pre-reqs you need to apply (like A&P, ethics, psych..etc). On the website for the school, it says the GPA to apply is 2.75. WELL.... I went to my advisor just to check up and she said that the "COMPETITIVE GPA" is 3.5! Why the heck didn't they just say that in the first place and I would have worked less and made the time to study more and give it 1000% when I thought B's would be good enough! It makes me mad. So it looks like my only chance on POSSIBLY getting in is to apply for a program thru a hospital where they help pay for school and books and stuff and HOPE they take me in! Might have to take some classes over again to get A's Grrrrrrr! Good luck!!!!!

Hey!
I know how it feels..trust me. I think the highest GPA I have at any school I've looked at (and I've looked at hundreds) is around a 3.69. And that's STILL low! I went ahead and applied for fall 2009 on a whim (my intended start term is/was spring 2010) to two colleges: one private, one state. I had a 3.5 at the state and was rejected immediately -- didn't even make it on the waitlist. However, I had heard good things about the private school I applied to in regards to what they take into consideration when making admission decisions. I had no higher than a 3.43GPA when I applied there (it's supposedly a VERY competitive school to get in to) and I made sure my NET score was high (I got in the 98th percentile the first try) and that my essay was as good as it could be. I also took a CNA class and volunteered at a local hospital and joined our community college's Pre Nursing Club and became Treasurer of that. Even with a 3.43 GPA I managed to snag a spot on their waitlist (#11), beating out people with 3.8's and higher (honest story). Now I'm just sitting around hoping to be admitted off their wait list, but I have to admit the entire experience gave me a lot of hope. Even if I don't get in this semester, I know if I apply to a bunch of places I'm bound to get in somewhere.
Did I mention I have a whopping 2 C's in my prerequisite courses? Stats and General Chem. And a B in Micro. And I still got the waitlist status :)
Make sure to do some research on which schools take more than GPA into consideration. Also get some nursing experience under your belt (ex: volunteer, CNA, etc.) and if you have the time...a second language.
Good luck! You'll get in! :)

Well, you can move to another state like Ohio and several of the schools there the Min. gpa is 2.0 to get in (Ohio State University). I live in Texas and I am waiting to find out if I get in for the fall at Lamar University, the min. to get in here is also 2.0 if you have a 3.0 your a shoe in. And they just started accepting students for both ADN and BSN at the same time every semester. You can apply for both at the same time, I did. I don't care which one I get into I have my pre reqs done for both just waiting and praying. I hate when someone else has my future in there hands. Oh and and I have been a CNA for 12 yrs and an EMT for 4 and they said it does not help they just look at the GPA.
Thank you everyone for your advice and your experiences. You guys seem to have better gpa's than me, so i'm kinda scared.... i HATE having my life in these strangers hands. I'm desperate to become a nurse and feel that i am motivated and would make a good nurse and would do well in the program, but unfortunately, my pre-req grades are not outstanding ( i wish i had B's in everything!) It makes me so upset to think that i can't live my life because i didn't get the best of the best grades. All i can say is, is i'll be better once i'm in the program ( i have to be!) I know it sounds ridiculous, but i just wish a school would give me a chance. And if i suck, then kick me out. Just give me a chance. I might have to take a course (s) over, but i really hope i dont have to. I never knew how difficult nursing was to get into. I was in another health care major, and though i thought that one would be harder to get into, nursing seems impossible. No offense because i love love love nursing and can't wait to be one, but if i had a 4.0 gpa i would probably be a doctor. I hope it doesnt offend anyone, but that's kind of how i feel. I'm just going to keep on looking....
Oh, and i have been volunteering at my local hospital for almost a year now and i work at a pharmacy as a tech (maybe that might mean something.. .maybe not... most likely not.) It gets to be overwhelming.
I hope a school will look at my grades and not be too dissapointed and look at my desire to be a nurse and give me a shot.
Thanks everyone.

Hi there,
I'm sorry to hear that. I have been in your situation before when I didn't have a good gpa. I was desperated to be a nurse like you was. Then I applied about 8 schools, and got turned down everywhere. Then I started applying outside of California, and fortunately got accepted in Denver. I also did volunteer at a local hospital before I applied for nursing school. I still have 1 more year left of the nursing program.
So if you think you can relocate, then try to apply to other states because you never know. The school that I'm going to, Denver school of nursing, doesn't require high gpa, as long as you completed all of the required class, they will accept you eventually. if you need more infor about Denver school of nursing, you can search on google

I would check into an LPN program. I say this for two reasons. First, the acceptance criteria are less stringent than the RN program (or at least for my area). This should not suggest that LPN’s are less smart than RN’s. It is simply the law of supply and demand. EVERYONE is trying to get into the RN programs, thus the demand is high. Since there are only a certain number of available seats (supply), the competition is quite fierce. If there are less students applying to the LPN program, the competition isn’t quite as bad. Finally, if accepted into an LPN program and you graduate, you can begin working as an LPN to gain experience while working on your LPN to RN bridge. When you graduate as an RN, you will already have patient care experience, thus not making you a “new graduate”. Do a search for new grads…they are finding it difficult to find jobs these days. There are schools offering LPN to BSN programs as well if that is your ultimate goal. Don’t give up. There are so many different avenues to take. Just research them so that you have backup plans J

I agree with ParkerBean Curd,I am currently going the LPN route...There were over 300 apps to the Nursing program at our school and not alot of apps to the LPN,so I decided to go that route rather than maybe getting into the RN program. My gpa is a 2.94,but I know there is a lot of competition!

if you are referring to the morton plant earn as you learn program, you have to first be accepted to the SPC RN program and then apply to their program. they will not just take anyone .... they need to know first that you are already accepted into the SPC program. if you plan on going that route, be sure to check out their promisory note that you have to sign for your contract. it is for 3 years and they pay less than you can make elsewhere.

Are you in New York City? I ask because you mentioned BMCC. Because I know a lot of programs that will accept you but they are private schools. Basically it's the "we'll take you if you can pay" kind of thing. All still good programs but they have more seats and therefore can take in more students without the competitive 3.5 or higher GPA that most CUNY schools require.
NYU in NYC- 3.4 or higher gpa. Only thing is you need 40k to go along with it.
Long Island Univeristy in Brooklyn- 3.0 or higher and you need to have at least 2.75 in your science courses which all have to be C or better. It will run you about 25k per year. If you are not accepted to the school as a nursing student, you will be considered undeclared and after a semester you can change your major to Nursing.
Adelphi University in Long Island & Manhattan - 3.0 or higher will run you about 20k per year.
Molloy in Long Island-3.0 or higher and is also about 20k per year.
All of these programs are BSN programs and accept over 100 students into their nursing program every year. If you have at least a 3.0 I can guarantee you'll get into at least one of them.
