Why you want to be a nurse?

Published

hi!

i am curious to know why others choose nursing as a profession. i seem to get asked why i want to be a nurse all the time and i never have a great answer. i want to be a nurse because i love science, people and it will provide for my family- nothing fancy about that.

why did you become a nurse or why do you want to be a nurse?

thanks

!!! i just noticed the sticky above with the same question. since i already posted i cant seem to delete this thread-sorry!!!!

Specializes in Flight, ER, Transport, ICU/Critical Care.

Bottomline for me at the time:

IT WAS THE MONEY.

Firemedic started at $5.29 haz retirement benefits, paramedic paid $7.00 an hour without benefits.

Nursing started at about $25 hour PRN status.

I could be a medic (1st LOVE) and nurse for dollars!

Easy decision at the time.

;)

I feel comfortable enough here to state the truth --

Because I'm good at it.

When I was in the military I got "stuck" in the healthcare field. You fill out a "dreamsheet" and they put you where they need/want you. I worked on an Oncology floor for 3 of the 4 years and to this day it was the most rewarding experience of my life. Although my Mother had been a nurse for 40 yrs, I never once thought of going into the field until I was "put" in it as a medical technician (in the military you do everything a nurse does you except pass narcs --and some do that-- you just don't get paid for it) and learned that I was good at it.

Of course you're helping people, etc...but you help people in any field you choose, don't you??

I do enjoy nursing...it's not that I'm doing something I do not enjoy just b/c I'm good at it...I mean, lol, most ppl can't pull that one off!

SO there you have it:) Everyone has their reasons...:)...that are right for them!

BEST of luck to everyone:)

I love the autonomy, flexibiliy, medical issues, assessments interacting with a multitude of personalities. And have known since I was alittle kid that i was gonna be a nurse. And of course the money aint bad!!!

Specializes in none yet, but I'm VERY excited!.

I had to take a friend to the hospital while I was in college. There was an elderly lady moaning in the next bed. I walked over and took her hand - and I'll never forget how fiercely strong her grip was. It was a strength born of fear. I held her ice-cold hands and she calmed down. I felt great! I thought I'd love to be a nurse, but I was afraid I'd make a mistake and kill someone by accident. Now (15 years and two children later), I'm more confident that I can manage to stay alert enough to do my job.

I know there are issues with patient ratios and chaos. But I also know that the shortage provides the flexibility to work for a responsible employer (if money isn't too important).

I am a third generation nurse and my grandfather was a doctor. So I was brought up around medicine and knew from a very young age that I wanted to be a nurse.

I throughly enjoyed teaching and really was conflicted as I had no interest in teaching any school subjects.

I went into the nursing program and found that alot of jobs involved teaching. I originally wanted to do community nursing and go into schools to do presentations but then I went through my preceptorship in surgery. In our hospital surgery also includes daysurgery and pre admission clinic. I loved every minute of it and found that there was alot of teaching to be done on the unit.

I am a people person and excelled in my role as cashier at a grocery store. I found it interesting how my attitude and the way that I treated someone really made or broke their day and how much more of an impact I could have as a nurse.

I am a compassionate person who loves people and I still cry over every single one of my patients that dies. As much as everyone tells me that this will pass I hope that it never does. I hope that I remember every one of my pts as a person.

Basically I LOVE NURSING

Some of it sucks (NG's really gross me out and so does suctioning mucus ) but I can't think of a career more soul rewarding than nursing.

When that patient looks you in the eye and tells you that you made a difference in their life, day, hour than its worth a whole day's worth of bad things.

Specializes in acute care.

*like helping people

*was at a customer service position, constantly getting yelled at over wilted lettuce, broken eggs, and rotten apples. i finally said to myself, "self, if i am going getting yelled at and called names, i want to at least be in a field that matters"

*money

*but mostly wanted to be in a field with flexible schedules that would allow me to be with my (future) children as much as possible. this reason was most important to me.

Much like the above poster- I was in customer service for years- getting grief over orders that were not shipped yet, billing errors, etc. I felt like what I did didn't have any real purpose. It was very unfulfiling. So now, 2 kids later, I attend a evening weekend RN program. I wanted to something that:

1. Can make a difference in someones life

2. That can allow me to support myself and children in the future if I needed to do it on my own

3. Nursing had definate job security- the world will always need good nurses

4. As soon as I get over being freaked out by vomit, I know I will be a good nurse (hopefully this happens sooner than later)

Specializes in Med surg, cardiac, case management.

I think for me it came down to 3 things:

1. A strong need to help people in a hands-on way. Working in scientific research just doesn't give you that opportunity.

2. Great variety of opportunities. I once read a book, 101 Career in Nursing;and it wasn't an exaggeration, there are 101 possibilities

3. Great need for nurses, meaning yet more opportunities and also an increased ability to pay back loans.

Oh, and the hospice nurse who looked after my mom. It made me think I'd like go into something like that, hospice/palliative/oncology

Specializes in orthopaedics.

your answer doesn't have to be fancy or dramatic. it sounds like it came from your heart.

i did not even think about becoming a nurse until after high school. i applied for a job at a nursing home as an aide and met a wonderful woman that helped me see what an awesome profession nursing is. she told me i'd make a great nurse some day now 15 years later i have finally become an rn and start my first job july 9th. the woman that encouraged me passed away a year after i met her. i hope she is somewhere smiling down on me;)

Specializes in Case mgmt., rehab, (CRRN), LTC & psych.

I choose nursing for the job stability, steady income, and ability to make a small difference in someone's life. Also, healthcare has more prestige than retail, fast food, or factory work.

Specializes in ER.

The choice came for me in high school, I started working for an oral surgeon, and you cannot imagine how AWESOME it felt to make a differnce to people that were scared or in pain. Been hooked ever since that first time!! If i can make one persons day, better, easier, or somehow ease thier pain, my job is done. Its the feeling you get from making a difference!!!:yeah:
