Why does Sonography pay more than nursing?

Published

Nurses have a way heftier workload and funnier hours. Why do you suppose sonographers make more money than nurses?

HA does going to nursing school for 4 years vs 2 make you think your some how more educated or higher in the tandem pole. Go ahead and Explain to your friends who have 4 year degrees in accounting, engineering etc

why you had to go to college for 4 years to wipe ***

I think what Running meant was that in technical terms a "Professional Degree" is technically undergraduate with a minimum of a Bachelors Degree. Usually though, is Masters or Higher. In order to be viewed as a profession, those requirements must be met.

Those who are hold a professional degree and are deemed a profession have more prestige and can typically demand a higher pay. This pay that we nurses so definitely deserve. She was simply suggesting that should we all attain this higher level, we may be able to negotiate salaries more. Physical Therapists, Occupational Therapists, and Pharmacists have slowly transitioned to higher level degrees and typically increased wages resulted.

I think we can all agree that even an Associates Degree in Nursing takes four years. There is minimal difference between the BSN and ADN minus a few fluff courses (leadership, community health, etc). I wish they would somehow come up with a solution to make that everyone with a Nursing Degree was awarded a minimum of a Bachelors by simply throwing in that little bit of fluff to the ADN program.

I'm not saying one is better than the other, simply that nursing definitely deserves higher wages than we typically have, and if we did follow suit of other professions, we may be able to finally attain that. I honestly think nurses even in lower cost of living areas deserve a minimum of 30$/hr. We should definitely take pride in ourselves and our job.

Since you're obviously not one yourself, are you the jilted ex of a nurse or something? My, my. I'd get some help for that bitterness if I were you, it's showing.

Actually Cherry, I thought that post was kinda funny. There's always a wee bit of truth to those... like it or not

Maybe because teachers salaries are state regulated and we all know the state government can be cheap. Movie stars make more money because the movies they star in are paid for by people like you and I which number in the millions, so they get a cut off of that. If you star in a movie and 5 million people go see it at $8 a ticket that is a $40,000,000 rack in for that one movie. Being the star, you had a lot to do with why 5 mil people went to see it, because you were bankable, famous and the film was good. So with that kind of money, I can see why stars make that much. Even if you made just 1% (which is low) you would still take home $400,000 and that is just when the movie is at the show. What about all the extra money you make from it being rented on videos and cd's. Usually stars have a contractual agreement before they even do a pic. anyway. Plus they get free stuff because they are celebrities whom people worship and adore.

I think you missed the point, we understand the logistics of how they make the money they do. The million dollar question is why should they?

Thank you tittytatRN, that was exactly my point :)

Why not? Stuff like this I'm pretty capitalistic on. Simply, the market supports it. In it's essence, it's merely supply and demand. When someone's trying to market a movie with an A-list actress in her 20-30's so that it will sell well at the box office, there's only a handful of people who meet such criteria. High demand, low supply.

If you're asking "why?" ethically, there is no one answer.

I don't think it has to do with a degree.

If nurses as a whole were known to possess the traits of respected professionals, they would be seen as such.

If you have even one nurse on your floor who behaves like a selfish child, your whole floor will suffer for it.

There will be people who work in EVERY profession who do not possess or demonstrate the traits of respected professionals.

Medicine is a very respected profession. Anyone who HASN'T worked with a doc who throws charts and hissy fits? Hangs up the phone? Talks down to everyone? Yells?

Exactly.

I didn't, maybe because I take some pride in what I do.

The whole "butt wiper, bedpan hauler" impression of nurses is both outdated and insulting. And not funny. I went to college to do FAR more than that, so IMO it was a sorry excuse for a joke (actually, I don't think it even was a joke). All it does is illustrate a complete misunderstanding of what RN's do, and laughing and thinking there's any amount of "truth" to it, perpetuates that belief among the general public.

I certainly don't deny myself a comfortable lifestyle but I think it's pathetic we have people dying of starvation, homeless children, and a pi** poor education system. But we support frivolous movie stars who make stupid a** movies? I have better things to do with my money than support their extravagant lifestyles. To each his own though.

I've seen it go both ways.
