Ok, I'm a bit frustrated with all of these posts telling us that we shouldn't go into nursing because we need a job and steady income. Sure, I do like to help people, but I need a steady job even more. So, I decided to post a poll to see if we can get some honest answers.

:p

The real reason I'm going into nursing is because I want to work in the medical profession. Honestly, I would have preferred ot go to medical school, as was my plan all through highschool. However, an unexpected pregnancy, and even more unexpectedly becoming a single mom made me rethink ten years of school, and 24 hour residency shifts.

It seemed like the logical transition would be to nursing, where I can eventually become a nurse practioner if I so choose. some of my other reasons are:

job stability with benefits and a nice income

someone mentioned being able to assess their kids, and I have to admit this is another reaon for me.

I really enjoy helping people. I've always been a bleeding heart :)

and I think scrubs look cute :)

i can honestly agree with everything you said. i feel the same way mainly to let my kids be proud of me and to see myself in a good profession. :)

i am going in to nursing for several reasons. one being i had a good job and then got layed off..(lots of people have i know):crying2:

i have 3 kids to feed and clothe and a husband who works but makes a little above minimum wage. i always wanted to go to college but didn't have the resources but now i do thanks to financial aid and all of my dependents!:lol2: so money is a factor, i won't lie. and it's one of the quickest programs to get through and start making some decent money! second, i truly want to help others and want a profession that i can be proud of and for my kids to be proud of me! i want to utilize my brain ..lol what little i have left, and hope to make some small yet significant differences in the lives of others. and on a more personal level i want to be a nurse in honor of my mom, who died of melanoma when i was 10. she wanted to be a nurse with all her heart and soul and never had the chance. i kinda feel like this is a way to make that happen for her through me. and as others have stated the flexibility nurses have, working only 3-4 days per week if you choose, job security, and moving anywhere and having a job! those are my reasons! :chuckle

steady job and income are two reasons. The main reason is that when my daughter was 5 months old, she had to spend almost a week in the hospital for RSV. It was the most terrifing time in my life. The nurses that cared for her were so compasionate and helpful. After that, I knew that I wanted to be there for others the same as they were there for my daughter and me.

Well it all started with my grandmother's decsion to become and LPN. Then my mom became an RN and met my dad who is a Paramedic. Needless to say wanting to help people and have a fulfilling career is in my blood!! I'm actually begining to think it's hereditary b/c my sister is talking about becoming a doctor. I come from a line of health care providers that enjoy their jobs. I was practically raised in a makeshift hospital. My grandmother and my mother would come home talking about patients and my dad would start in on how many lives he saved that day. Seeing what they do and hearing about all they go through at work just made me want to be a nurse even more. Sure I could go to med school but I want the one on one relationship nurses get with their patients that some doctor's don't get. I love helping people so why not get paid for what you love!!

Specializes in ICU, PICC Nurse, Nursing Supervisor.

Truthfully I want out of floor nursing. I am working on my BSN now hopefully in preperation for Law school. I would love to use my nursing experience to make a career in Law. I went into nursing for the money, honest and simple.

I am going into nursing because I love helping people, but my main reason is having a steady well-paying job. With today's economy and prevalent job layoffs, I believe nursing is the best option for me and my family.

i like being a student

to try to make a difference

good benefits

flexible scheduling

I worked on-call in a hospital for a little while and I still remember the first day of orientation, we were introduced to a Nurse Attorny. I forgot what she was talking about but she sort of stick in my mind being a Nurse Attorny.

i always wanted a job where my i could constantly be learning and using my incredibly enormous brain (LOL).

seriously....i didn't want a job that would become boring.

there are sooooo many specialities in nursing and sooooooo many jobs in nursing.

i like coming home after a long day of work and knowing that i DID something. it's an honorable profession.

and i like those cute little outfits we get to wear...jusssst kidding!

Looking back it seems inevitable that I would go into nursing. Pay issues aside I've always been involved in public safety/helping professions starting with my First Aid merit badge at age 12. What other type of job matters so much?

I would say the prime reason is personal satisfaction. I'm familiar with the work in general and imagine I'll be successful and happy in it.

Specializes in ER, CCU, LTAC.
i'm becoming a nurse because i want to help people. it's just that simple. and that's the whole truth. :)

same here!!!!

in addition to that, my grandmother had alzhiemer's disease and i saw how she was neglected in the facility were she was before she died...i said to my self "i can't change every nurse but atleast there will be one that has compassion and cares about their job!!!
