Why is it... (nurses constantly throw jabs at physicans)

Nurses General Nursing

Published

Let me preface this by saying I am around nurses, and nursing students more so I don't get to hear the other side but that being said.....

Why do nurses constantly feel the need to throw jabs at physicans at every turn. "Dr. never listen" "that resident did this" That medical student.."

This is a form of professional insecurity. It showls a lack of professionalism. If we want to show our professionalism, we should respect other professions. And I have said this before and heard " well they should respect us" Are we in the 3rd grade? Our competency should speak for itself, we don't need to degrade ouselves by whining and acting like babies.

Just my .02

NP2BE....It is your perception of nurses being "under physicians" that put them on a pedestal in the first place. I agree that we are all collegues in the care of the patient. And you can be I know more about the holistic care of the patient. The physician only knows the physical aspect. But it is I who is providing spiritual and emotional care as well as physical care to ease their pain and suffering. Good luck in nusing, I think you may need it.

I think nurses do provide a check and blance system against physicians, and they don't belong on a pedestal either. But i am hearing that you think docs don't care about the patient either, they are in this field because they care about people just like us.

Doctors are not automatically smart just because they are doctors. I don't work 'under' anyone nor does anyone work 'under' me. We are a healthcare 'team'. There are plenty of times when I know better than the MD/NP and vice versa. I have been taught many things by NPs, MDs, CNAs, RNs, LPNs, and even unit clerks and housekeepers. There have been occasions where the housekeeper has noticed things that I didn't and that's the honest truth. No, we should not degrade each other, but there has to be room for a little venting. To be honest, we have 2 NPs and 3 docs at my facility and I wouldn't put any faith in any but one of them. Same goes for the nurses, CNAs etc. Some are smart and some are not. Some are good, some are bad. To deny that is just ignorant. I will not respect someone who doesn't deserve my respect.

well put, thanks

sigh.........there are caring doctors and burnt out ones, same as in nsg. but you cannot come onto this board accusing nurses of being insubordinate. what are you exactly trying to say??? nurses will vent- there are mds that can be extremely difficult to deal with. furthermore, what nurses verbalize is a reflection of how (some) mds TREAT us, thus the vents are more about the ignorance. why would any nurse in their right mind just automatically honor what an md does? next thing i'll hear is that we're all the stepford nurses!

I don't think I am properly communicating my point, so lets just end this. I have just heard so many hateful and in many cases idiotic thing since I have done my rotations and been in school, and perhaps if you heard what I heard, you might understand what I am getting at. I was not in anyway trying to be offensive but some people on this board have in frustration broke down and resorted to name calling instead of either moving on or trying to understand what I was getting at. I love the field of nursing, I have met some of the coolest people since my journey has begun, I have also seen some ridulousness, that of which I was trying to address here.

When was the last time YOU watched a doctor hold the hand of an elderly lady who lay dying all alone? Or hold and comfort the mother who has just lost her child because the doctor couldn't save the child??? When was the last time you had a doctor take a patient to the scrub bath to have the charred/burned skin removed from their body and listen to their screams of agony because the pain medicine prescribed is not sufficient? When was the last time you had a doctor do anything like any of this???

Yes doctors, or most of them, do care. BUT, caring is much more than a quick assessment and a prescription or ordered test. Remember the phrase:

Doctors cure... Nurses CARE!!!

Well said, sagarcia.

The only point I want to make to the nursing student is that for many of us, this board serves the very purpose you want to repress, and that is to vent. On the floors we have to watch who we talk to sometimes, and our families don't need the burden of listening to us gripe, not to mention that many times only another nurse understands what we're talking about!!

That's the point...you're welcome here, but until you are a nurse for a while, you will probably have an idealistic view of things. It's probably unrealistic also. It's good to want to improve things-I'd love for all healthcare disciplines to get along. On the unit where I work, we're very lucky to have docs who are respectful of us, and us of them, and we do work as a team. I know it's not the same everywhere....I've worked there too. However, I've never thought a doctor was superior to me intellectually. They may have more years of schooling, but only because I chose nursing, not medicine.

Good luck to you. And I hope that when you are a nurse, you will have a forum like this one to blow off steam without being criticized for it.

I don't think docs are intellectually superior, and BTW, I WAS venting . Am I only allowed to vent in a pro-nursing way or is constructive criticism not allowed?

Idealism furthers change towards positive ideals. There are many nursing students on this board, Right now most of the BS I get is from a few (not most) incomptent instructors and the rude as heck nursess from my med-surge rotation whom my excellent clinical instructor suggest I follow anyways to see what NOT to do. Maybe when I get into practice I will shut a blind eye to my fellow nurses and only vent about other professions, but I doubt it. Plenty of new nurses on this board complain about crappy treatment from veteran nurses. The best place to enact change is from within. It is more productive to look at these problems because correcting them improves nursing as a whole. Complaining about docs with out a specific example is just whining. I call em like I see em.

MDs are like anyone else---if a certain behavior gets you the right results you repeat it---they raise cain and everyone scampers around the nurses station and they get what they want....new nurses esp are apt to go to pieces at such times

This has nothing to do with what you are saying :zzzzz , but how you are saying it.

I am not a student nurse anymore (thank god!!!!), however you are not making student nurses look very good. I'm not only talking about your attitude but your SPELLING, OMG!!! Check out your previous posts...

And what is 'ridulousness' :chuckle
