Why do so many people insist that LPN'S AREN'T REAL NURSES!!??

I mean, the title does have "Nurse" in it.So why are so many people insisting that LPN's arent real nurses? When I go to the hospital, I see these people giving medication , care, comfort and other services to their patients, isn't that what nursing is all about? What do you think about this issue? Do you think LPN's aren't real nurses?

idont think a cna could pass the lpn state boards in this day and time. the cna training im ga is about 6 weeks and lpn is 18 months.

in ca there is a provision that allows a cna with 3 years of acute hospital experience and an approved pharmacology to take the lvn boards. not sure how many actually succeed but the provision is there and i have heard it mention multiple times out and about in ca so there must be somebody doing it.

I'm glad I live in Canada (Ontario). RPNs (our name for LPN) have almost the same scope as RNs (yes, also for MUCH less pay), however we are not that restricted in our practice. We can do IV, hang blood, administer meds, make assessments etc. There is very little we are restricted from. It makes RPNs in our province mad because we do essentially the same job for $10 less an hour. Here it is a 2 year program, and yes we absolutely are nurses!

I am so glad I had a killer career as an LPN and I worked in CCU,ICU, and ER the whole 38 yrs of working and was just as trusted as the rest of the TEAM I worked with.

I figured out years ago that RN = Real Nurse (in the minds of the general public) so therefore LPN must mean Learned Practically Nuthin' (I'm joking, I'm joking)

Where I live, LPN's are no longer hired to work in hospitals or specialty clinics. We LPN's are almost exclusively hired by ALF's, nursing homes and geriatric rehab facilities. Doesn't bother me though.... I work in a facility that is 100% Alzheimer's and other types of dementia and I love my residents. I've been encouraged to get my RN but I'd miss what I do too much.
