So...I've been peeking around the web, and I found this lovely site called the Student Doctors Network (apparently fondly known as SDN.) I went on there and created an account and actually made a few posts (nothing inflammatory, and all related to nursing.)
Can I just say.....holy moly .....it was very eye opening. I went on there to get a perspective on the "other side", being that I am of the opinion that nurses and physicians really don't understand each other very well.
The two things that hit me the most were:
1. Good Lord, these people have got to be the most competitive, argumentative, full of themselves people I've ever seen. It's all about who made the highest MCAT and why their degree is so much better than your degree (and that refers to everybody...PAs, NPs, other Doctorate prepared medical professionals e.g. PharmDs, DPTs, etc...even DOs get thrown in there sometimes.) It's a big huge "my weenie is bigger than your weenie" contest.
2. There are almost no threads where patients are mentioned. Yes, I know this is site largely focused on the educational preparation of physicians, but seriously, when physicians go to medical school, does it even occur to them that at the end point, they are going to be taking care of the patient in that bed? And Lord, if they are that condescending to other medical professionals with college degrees and beyond, what can they possibly think of poor Bubba that just got diagnosed with colon cancer that never finished high school and works in a factory, that they now have to treat? If nurses are no better than the dirt under their shoe, what can they possibly think of their patients?
Whoooooo, man. I came back here and got warm fuzzies. I love you all (even the old, cranky, mean ones...and you know who you are) and am so happy that I am one of you. :redpinkhe
SDN is 90% pre-meds. They are stuck in a hypercompetitive environment and they let it alllll hang out on the web.Sometimes, when nursing school is hard, I go on SDN. I read their bitter bitter posts until I feel better about my own life choices
LOL, I have to agree I've never seen such a collectively bitter bunch of people till I stumbled on that site. Makes the occasional cattiness of nursing look like a walk in the park! I think its a real testament to the fact that you may be a genius, but if your not careful, you could loose your heart/kindness along the way.
I think that it's important to remember that SDN stands for STUDENT doctor forums.
While, I'm sure, there are many licensed physicians that post on those boards, many of them still haven't got a clue what they're in for. So they puff themselves up and talk about how they're going to demean the nurses. They still have the "good ol' boy" image of a doctor in their minds. When they're graduated and begin their internship, they will, likely, change their attitudes (slightly) about nurses, and learn a bit about humility when they're the at the bottom of the totem pole.
Just think about all the students and want-to-be nurses that post on here bashing nurses....
From what I have seen, there are a TON of med students and pre-meds, yes, but a lot of the posturing comes from people that list themselves as "attendings". I read a thread yesterday re: CRNAs vs. MDAs and this MDA actually argued that the year of O-Chem that he took as an undergrad made him a better anesthesia provider than a CRNA.
Sorry, buddy, unless you are a physician researcher, I don't know any doctor that has used their O-Chem since they left medical school, and I fail to see what it has to do with practical, safe anesthesia practice.
There is another attending on there that is a "down with the DNPs!" type .... that doesn't even know what DNP stands for, and it's on his signature ... wrong (He calls it "Doctorate Nurse Practitioner" or something.) I gently pointed it out to him and tried to educate him on what the degree actually was in a private thread .... didn't change anything .... not even the erroneous signature line. Sorry, but that just makes you look plain old stupid.

SDN Rocks! I've turned my Paramedic, CNA,Nurse, PA, SA, Dr. etc. friends on to that site and so far, everyone agrees it's the best!
Just my $.02.
Let's not get into the whole, this site is better than that site I appreciate all the compliments of allnurses.com, it's great to hear. But at the same time, bashing another site just isn't that productive.
They obviously have an audience that find that site beneficial to them, and that is fine. Each site has it's terms of service and managing or tolerating different levels of behavior. Different flavors for different folks. The title of the thread is Why I love allnurses :) Not why we don't love another site.
Just my 2 cents :) Carry on.

I found SDN and was gonna recommend it to a pre-med friend of mine... till I saw the nastiness on there too. I was surprised to read all these med students or whomever talking about doing all kinds of nasty, passive aggressive stuff against nurses, each other, and the whole world in general. Things like feigning writing a nurse up for calling to check on something, because "she's dumb for calling and should be taught a lesson, by scaring her and haha look at the fear in her big dumb eyes." Generally a very disrespectful, negative bunch. Yikes! My pre-med friend is much too good a person to even visit a negative site like that so I didn't even bother to tell her about it.
