Why won't anyone hire new grads?

U.S.A. Nevada

I find myself sooooo frustrated right now. All this hard work to get through school, graduate, pass boards, and now no one want to hire a new grad. Does anyone know if any hospitals hiring new grads right now?

If not, when do they usually start hiring them?

I'm just afraid at this rate that I'll have forgotten everything I've learned before I ever get my foot in the door. :uhoh21:

You are not alone. I am not really a new grad since I graduated 2006 but I have no experience at all so I still belong in that category. I graduated in the Philippines, got my RN license there, came here 2008, study for NCLEX, passed it and got my License March of this year. I've been applying since April unfortunately Im still applying until now..

It's sad cuz when HR call me they said they need nurses with experience,. How can I get the experience when nobody would give me a chance to work?

I am volunteering at Southern Hills for the mean time,. Hoping to know people who could help me find a job,. It's hard because I dont know anybody in this town.

:crying2::crying2:

a friend of mine knows someone who graduated december '08 and tried everywhere to apply for a nursing job in vegas, she's been working as a waitress (server) for the last 4 months now. she can't relocate because she is financially strapped and she's just working now to pay her bills and raise the money to move to northern nevada or out of state. sad to say, her story is typical now.

i'm still hoping things will be better by the time i enter the nursing workforce but, the people who graduate before me will obviously get first dibbs on the jobs. i'm sick of the media stating that nursing has continually added jobs here & there, where are these jobs?

some of the classmates of my relative who graduated last year were also having trouble looking for a new grad RN job.

can i ask what kind of a volunteer job you do at southern hills? a friend of my friend told me that they hire new grads. i dont know how true it is. but i also tried applying there and again was unlucky to get in.

Hi fellow nurses. I know how you guys feel. I'm from the Philippines and it's even worst in our country coz most the nurses here have been waiting for years just to have hospital experience. When I read this thread I just feel more depressed about this situation. Let's just pray for the betterment of our country's economy. :cry:

100k start costs to train new grads, want to guess why they don't want to hire you?

Where are you getting the figure 100k to train a new grad? I'm just curious - having seen cost benefit analysis on training new employee in other fields this seems high.

well your training for 3 months , and your also taking a RN to train and the RN gets paid preceptor training , and when your done with your preceptorship you still are learning skills .. i know it's very expensive to take the time to train a new grad ... and many hospitals only hire maybe one new grad every 6 mos... at least these days..

I still don't see how it is 100k - even if you are paying two people. The RN usually doesn't get extra for training. And as far as preceptorship that is a part of nursing school not training in a hospital. At least I thought so...
