Who to trust?

Is there any one place one can go to totally trust that the medical information will be honest, current, independent and in best interest of the patient? Seriously --

Where would you go, who would you call if money or time was no object, you could go anywhere in the world and if it were you needing help and not your patient?

Gosh, that depends on what you are looking for. I had a seizure a couple of weeks ago and I've been on the net since checking out everything I could find. One source leads to another. I checked "PubMed" online . . lots of research and links.

I also asked docs I trust and other nurses (I also asked the nurses here on ALLNURSES and got alot of info) . . . . . just start looking. Stuff comes . . .

WOW -- Lots of viewers but no suggestions. In the old days you'd have maybe said someone at Mayo Clinic, Cleveland Clinic or Mass General Hospital.

With all respect, the internet can't be the answer. You're scaring me. Must be at least one place in the US of A or one awesome medical team where we can trust that they care to send the very best.

I go to the CDC site with these kinds of questions. They are VERY quick with answering all my questions. They have not failed me yet.

Specializes in Neuro Critical Care.

I like the Merck Manual online or hardcover. If you are looking online I tend to stick with webMD, especially for info to give patients. If you are looking for a hospital I guess it depends on what in particular you need. All hospitals are known for something.

Specializes in ICU.

I think you need to refine your question. IF you want the absolute best you have to go to a facility that practices, as opposed to giving lip service to, Evidence Based Practice. There are a few EBP sites out there - the Cochrane Database and BMJ have EBP sites - I personally would start a search under Evidence Based Practice. If you want to find out more about EBD and how it is approached the Joanna Briggs Institute is the nursing/allied health EBP database and it has some marvellous examples.

I would agree that the CDC would be fast, and Im sure they would give it to you pretty straight about what it was.

Now, if I was going to be a patient somewhere, without a doubt Id want the USAF Academy Hospital.

I think you need to be more direct. What kind of information do you need exactly. It's kinda hard to be exact without some more information.

You can research facilities on the internet and get recommendations too.

I can't even begin to tell you how much info I got on seizures.

Plus all these nice nurses have given lots of good advice.

Specializes in Specializes in L/D, newborn, GYN, LTC, Dialysis.

i am with the poster who suggests the merck manual!

Thanks everybody. Sorry not more refined in the question. Just looking to compile a list of resources patients can trust in general but also be free of conflicts of interest where they are true to helping people. Sounds like a simple thing to accomplish but it's a tough one.

The Air Force answer very interesting!! Have heard Anderson Hospital in Texas would be a trusted name for those seeking help on cancer.

The evidence-based recommendations very helpful.

Ha! Not too long ago called the poison control center in PA for some info and found that they are funded by Bayer Corporation (silly me thought they were supported by government) and actually told me they had conflicts of interest because of it. Blew me away.

Have found CDC to say whatever Harvard says. Not necessarily a good thing.

If you have access to the USAF Health division (like a veteran or current patient) you could suggest they talk to them.

Hey thanks for the nice comment about Mayo....that's were I work! We do have a web site which includes a place to ask questions.
