I know this question has been asked before, but those threads are now a few years old.
I'm about to start my nursing program in August and I'm in the process of buying my supplies. We are instructed to have a watch that has a second hand, but that is the only requirement for the watch. I have read various post about the fact that wrist watches can harbor a lot of bacteria. Not to mention, considering the amount of times I will have to wash my hands, it seems as though wrist watches would be uncomfortable from the moisture.
That said, I really like the idea of a lapel watch, but I've never used one before, and I'm not sure how functional they are. Will a lapel watch serve me just fine, or am I better off with a wrist watch?
Which style of watch do you all recommend?
I got a watch from Fossil with a stainless steel band (no leather) for nursing school. It's unobtrusive, has a sweep second hand, and I wear it every day to work 4 years later. It's water resistant, and the watch I got comes with removable links so I didn't have to get it resized for my small wrists.
I agree, my Fossil watch was cheap (I am thinking around 35.00) from an outlet store. Stainless and water resistant. I wear it in the ocean with no problems. I was thinking about getting a military time watch but love my Fossil Oh and if you are larger, the bands are larger and they will remove for smaller wrists.
I wear I by Invicta Watch
It is sturdy, they have smooth sweeping hand movements and are classy enough to wear on a date after working. Mine was 100 dollars. I rather spend a little more for quality then have to buy 2 timex watches.

I have always been a Fossil-lover, but recently bought a PlastiChic watch and LOVE LOVE LOVE it. I have the original style, but they have released a few more.
It's tiny, comfortable, durable, fairly cheap (I've seen them from $10-30), and comes in a ton of cute colors.

Thank you so much for the recommendation and links, scarecrow! I wound up ordering a stainless steel invicta watch from world of watches for $36 + free s&h due to a special one day sale. It supposedly retails for $395.
Go with a Fossil or Timex watch for around $40.It will serve you better with all the wear and tear...
Save your better watch for off duty.
Exactly. I just retired a cheap Timex (from the eeeeeeeeevil Wally World ) after using and abusing i for ten years. It had been MRI'd as well and only stopped while in the MRI area. The decision to get rid of it was made because its finish had started to flake off and that really annoyed the heck out of me (and my wrist). I went back to Wally's and picked up another one for ~$30.00, and expect it to last until I retire.
When wearing any attire at work, one must consider what may be inflicted upon it.
I've bought a Swiss Medical Nursing Fob Clip Watch. It's a beautiful watch. They also have 10 different colours... The watch is water resistant 3ATM and swiss made! see the details here: http://www.swiss-medical-watches.ch/medical-clip-watch
I know some people were saying no plastic bands, but might I recommend a Casio Baby-G watch. I have the ana-digi. Still a regular watch with sweeping second hand, but also has the digital stuff. They really do last a long time. I've had my first one through 4 years in the US Navy and only bought a new one because my first one is white and it was getting dirty. Super easy to clean though since the band is plastic. If you don't like those though, the fossils are always great too.

Stainless steel Fossil watches are the bomb. You can find cheap ones but you definitely get your use out of them
