I've been in the operating room for the past two years now (time flies) and have made the transition to a level 1 hospital that has a heavy focus on cancer. currently in neurology and the entire week has not gone well for the patients, the doctors close the patient up saying they can't do anything for them. I am so used to being able to help fix a patient in the OR, a week where the patient is left with the Tumor and radiation being their last hope seems to be weighing me down and I was wondering how you all cope with it? I can handle the surgeons stress and yelling just fine...its when we can't do anything for the patient and it's cancer related that sticks with me. just yesterday a friend (who isn't in the nursing field) said everyone will get cancer and I was so upset I couldn't talk to her anymore. This is really bad and I want to learn how to deal with this better help please

I've been in the OR for about a year now, I started at a smaller hospital, and got accepted into the periop program there (15 ORs) but moved to a larger facility because it was closer to home (22 ORs spread out over three buildings). I am stressed! The cases are longer and much more acute! I'm so nervous about how acute the patients are at times. I love the OR and what I do but the difference is so huge Im considering going to a different hospital that is still closer than my first but smaller (15 ORs). Think I should? I've only been at the larger hospital for three months...

Have you heard anything about the myccp myth now that some people in Alberta have their results? :)

@Throughsameeyes do you know where your AB friend lives? I actually phone CARNA today and the exam coordinator told me they hadn't mailed the results yet I feel silly checking the mail almost every day now! @yougene congrats on passing!

In alberta CARNA's website has mycpp which stands for my continuing practice profile, we have to fill it out once we get our results from the CRNE I believe. Then we can practice as an RN? I think, not sure how Ontario does it

Hey, I just checked my cpp record, can't anyone who registered open this up and it will open up a new file for the person on the date that it was initiated? for example, i just checked today and now it says "RN record (08/03/14-30/09/14). I wish it was a hint! haha two more weeks

I'm a canadian nursing student looking to graduate this December, there is a hospital in my province that offers to train new grads/nurses in periop. Should I apply for the internship or not bother with it and take the periop course through a post secondary institution? What can I do to make my resume stand out?

Hi all, I'm looking for some advice here. During a shift i was giving a subcu heparing to a tiny old lady in for pneumonia and stronglyoides. She had barely any fat on her arms and her abdomen was distended and firm, so I opted for her arm. Thought I had enough fat but it turns out i didnt, I stabbed right through her skin and into my own finger. it bled quite a bit in the glove and when i left the room I milked the finger and kept pushing out the blood. She isn't hep ABC positive so I'm not worried I'll contract anything. However, for future practice does anyone have any tips on how I should position my fingers in such a way to get enough fat and avoid any possibility of the subcu getting me?

I'm definitely going to request the OR for my final placement! The only problem is that getting the spot depends on GPA and how many other people request it as well. There are about 2-4 spots open so I'm crossing my fingers that hardly anyone else will want to go there! Which is why i asked what would be the best route to get into the OR after graduation (should I not get the OR as my final placement). Thank you so much for the replies! When i make my request for placement, what are some of the key points I should make to 'sell myself' saying that I'm a good candidate for the OR?

Hi, I'm a a third year nursing student with MRU and ill be done my degree in December! Im an UNE on a general med floor so im gaining invaluable floor experience and i went to PLC to observe a surgery in the OR and i absolutely loved it. I don't think floor nursing suits who I am like the OR does! Does anyone know the best route to get into the OR after graduation? Should I just apply for the periop course offered by grant macewan? Any advice would be helpful!

oh? what was your first degree if you dont mind me asking? haha I did two years of BioSci at UC and one year of business before i figured out nursing was for me. I'm actually just going into my second year at mru but i have quite a few friends that finished it last year. The Gneds (except cluster 1) can be taken through Athabasca during the summer months same with HLTH2250. Talk to the transfer coordinator and she'll help you out for sure. As long as you keep up with the readings and dont let it get to out of hand you'll be just fine I know a lot of girls struggled in first year because they didn't want to keep up with the readings and left the papers to the last minute (I did this a few times too). Is this your first year?

I'm actually going to ask one of the nursing advisors about this sometime this month. I know a year ago they offered summer courses for the third years so they could finish in the fall semester. I understand that this is not offered all the time though..I want to finish this program fast!

you can totally do it! I took a whole bunch of gpa boosters like art to bring up my GPA to a 3.7! Last year, MRU accepted students high school students with high 80's and Post Grads with a GPA of 3.3 and above.

When I applied last year, there was no essay required. Send in your high school marks/post secondary and pray you have a high enough grade to get in. However, not to dissuade your choice. I have heard that Mount Royal University offers the better nursing program in Calgary. I worked at a Doctors office and all of the staff have said nothing but good things about grads from MRU. The main difference is that UC is more theoretical while MRU is more practical. The grads there graduate with 1600 clinical hours.
